Heading there this weekend and wondered if anyone knew of some good routes for road riding in the area (40-60 mile range, I guess) and/or decent bed + breakfast type places that aren't too expensive.

I rode around up there two weeks ago with my training buddies and it was tough riding. Very hilly with a lot of blind corners. A word of caution: the drivers up there don't really seem very fond of bike riders, so be very careful on the descents as the cars will rush right past you very closely. You should follow your ride with a nice run around the Gunks, a great trail rings the whole area, and there aren't any cars!

about 20-30 miles away is Harriman State Park - this is some of the best riding in the East.

Check out the site of SOS (a tri race over there in September). The course is rolling with just one major hill at the end... that's about 30miles of riding, very pretty. http://www.ulster.net/~sosnyta/
btw, highly recommend the race next year if you get a chance.

I live and train in the area. I disagree with tripoet regarding the local drivers. For the most part, they're great. Chances are, anyone who buzzed you was a weekender from New Jersey. I moved up here to get away from the dangerous, selfish drivers in Westchester County. There are many great routes, all hilly. If you stay in New Paltz, take 299 to 44/55, take a right, keep climbing, when you get to 209, turn around and come back. On 299 take a left on Butterville Rd. then take a left on Mountain Rd. and climb over Mohonk, down into High Falls, take a right on 213, towards Stone Ridge, then a right on Mossy Brook back to Mohonk Mt. This is just a taste. If you like really steep climbs, go to Platte Clove Road and climb Devils Kitchen.
