swimming and sneezing
I went swimming today for the first time in over a year. 2004 was a year devoted to duathlon, thus the only water I went into was to play with my kids. 2005 I'm going back to an Ironman (subject to qualification). In going to the pool today I found myself sneezing quite a bit at the end of the workout. I suspect that I'm having an allergic reaction to the chlorine.

For those that share medical or witch doctor advise on slowtwitch what has worked for you in this type of scenario?

I would give it some time first as I still have sneezing fits on occasion after swimming. Seemed to be more a few years back when i got back in to the pool as well, but now it's an occasional occurence, usually on backstroke night at masters if I inhaled alot of water.

snot rocket alert..... snot rocket alert....incoming

Swimming just loosens things up, if you have a cold or not. I don't think you should worry. I have been to a pool with to much chlorine and that can be a problem. There is a 3 inch clear fog over the water and breathing it can make you really sick and it is hard to breath.

Some days when the water is really cold I think I am allergic chlorine!!!!

I've struggled with this for some years depending on the chemist/mad scientist in charge of the pool. I call it the "pool sniffles".

I met a traithlete ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor this year and he told me it was chlorine sensitivity. He prescribed me Nasacort (for allergies). Two squirts a day and I haven't had this since.

Could be a dirty pool. I get a lot of sneezing when the pool water is funky.

Thanks all, I'll talk to the aqua director regarding test results, but I also know that this has been my worst year ever for allergies, so most likely that had something to do with it.

interestingly, chlorine is not an allergen, so one can't technically be "allergic" to chlorine. it is (obviously) an irritant, though.

i tend to get snotty even after lake swims, and am usually farmer blowing for the first several kms of a bike in most races, which prompts me to suspect that it's more the water than the chlorine.
