energy requirements

so i'm diabetic and i'm trying to work out how much food i need to take on board during the bike portion of an ironman. i was out for a ride on saturday and actually felt quite good, so what was meant to be a 100km or so ride turned into a 160km ride. i didnt quite have enuf food on me so i relied on shops along the way. this is what i had to eat during the bike:

2.4l or so of powerade

5 carboshotz (less than i would have had but i wasnt expecting to be out for so long)

4 x snickers bars (seemed to be best thing i could buy along the way for energy)

2 cans of coke

is that quite a bit? or is that about average? because from what i can gather thats about 420 grams of carbohydrates or so. and i still ended up going low in blood sugar aka 'bonking'.

Here's some data which tells you how many calories you burn (per lb & per kg) while cycling or running at a certain speed. Speed is in km/h. So, given your speed & your weight, you can figure out an approximation of how many cals you will consume.

The formatting on this will be a bit crap, but here goes.

Event Speed Cals/lb Cals/kg
Cycling 16.1 1.81 4.0
Cycling 19.3 2.72 6.0
Cycling 22.5 3.63 8.0
Cycling 25.7 4.54 10.0
Cycling 30.6 5.45 12.0
Cycling 32.2 7.26 16.0 (32kmh+)
Running 8.0 3.63 8.0
Running 8.4 4.08 9.0
Running 9.7 4.54 10.0
Running 10.7 4.99 11.0
Running 11.4 5.22 11.5
Running 12.1 5.68 12.5
Running 12.9 6.13 13.5
Running 13.8 6.36 14.0
Running 14.9 6.81 15.0
Running 16.1 7.26 16.0
Running 17.6 8.17 18.0
