If you've got some time, here's an average road bikers (350 miles a year) narrative, with pictures of his, riding up the Alpe D' Huez, in 1998. He documents his attempt. I found his site last year, and still go back and read it, for the pictures, every TDF, its one of my favorite personal narrative sites

Thanks to you I have a better understanding of what I'm missing....suddenly I (and my quads) don't feel so jealous.......

Notice that he took a wrong turn and had to turn back down and then go back up again.

The dude writing that went on to then ride the Col Du Galibier, at least he almost did. He thought that was harder, or more hard. But he was beat up by that point. So, who knows?
