37 cases today

And now we’re heading into lockdown.

We had one potential exposure at work. Another employee who tested positive over the weekend was on my floor same day I was. I probably wasn’t exposed, but getting tested on Thursday to be safe.

Little man’s hockey is cancelled for at least 2 weeks :-(

I guess it's all proportional, looking in from outside a lockdown seems severe for 37 cases. We've been around 1100-1200 cases per day in Quebec for weeks, and around 280-290 in the Montreal region, on a population of about 4 million, and we're on tight restrictions...

Covid sucks, you guys were doing so well, too, I saw that NFLD and PEI have left the bubble...

Our county went from one active case to fourteen in the last week. still exceptionally low but hopefully we won't see any more weekly 14x increases.

Dr Strang and the premier are doing a presser now. The idea is to nip it in the bud before it gets bad and there's nothing to be done. Looks like it's not going to be quite as restrictive as it was in the spring. Kids can still go to school, small gatherings are OK, etc.

bars, restautants, gyms, youth sports are all shut down. People are being told to do essential shopping only, malls reduced to 25% capacity.

When my kids were little, we had a rule: No throwing balls in the house....when Mom's around.

You are keeping schools open and closing the bars? What kind of priorities do you have??? That’s just wacky. Sports too???

Sorry but it is not possible to see this amount of new cases in Canada. Trump is required in order for COVID to spread.

A close friend who lives in Halifax just messaged that in connection with the lockdown, they are asking people to call police if they see gatherings of more than 5 people in their neighbourhood. Different from the first go-round, when they explicitly said NOT to do that.

What are your thoughts on that?

That has the Potential to cause problems, but necessary if we actually want to control the spread.

I don’t think they’ll get too many calls. Violations are punishable by fines up to $1000 per person. Everyone can get hit with the fines, not just the host.

All of Nova Scotia or just Halifax?

To put that into perspective, Montana has roughly the same population as Nova Scotia, and they have been averaging 1,200 new cases a day. They reduced their active case count from 22,000 to 16,000 based on new draconian measures of reducing capacity at bars, restaurants and casinos from 75% to 50% and implementing a 10 PM curfew. That and cooking the books a bit.

Halifax and Hants counties. For those who don’t know, which is most of the board, Hants is just to the northwest of Halifax county, it’s about an hours drive to get from the city to the end of Hants

Ontario went into lockdown and all schools shut last May when we were at 300 cases per day. Now we’re at 1,500 per day and all schools are open and in a few areas, all small businesses are closed but the large box stores (Walmart, Costco) are allowed to stay open.

But it all makes perfect sense...

Here's Alberta's situation. Last time we locked down basically at the foot of the rising slope at the start of April, and it took us until middle May to stem the tide of infections. By that metric, we should have aggressively shut down the KNOWN high-probability spreading activities in early October. But Kenney was all about keeping businesses open cause lockdown would be hard on them... so instead we are headed for an even longer lockdown of everything, and a bunch of needless suffering and deaths.

Sometimes making the hard decision (and cracking open the government pocketbook to compensate those affected) can save a LOT of money in the longer term. But our awesome UCP government has its eye firmly in the rearview mirror once again.

Less is more.

So would you not say Canada was very cautious the last few months with their approach to COVID?

I would say so and the cases are going up. Lockdowns are futile. In 5-10 years, the retrospective studies will show this. The only thing it does is kick the can down the road. Not even a perfect 4 week lockdown where not a single person comes within 100m of another will work.

What would it look like if there were no efforts to control spread? It would be friggin awful, that's what. Canada has been somewhat cautious, but I wouldn't call our approach "very" cautious. Our measures have been largely the same as in various US states, but with fewer of the anti-masker / anti-lockdown protesters. That, and we've been somewhat lucky so far in the Atlantic region.

Calling the lockdown "futile" is missing the point. Yes, they are kicking the can down the road wrt case numbers. that's a good thing, as we see with three (??) upcoming vaccines, it means that fewer people will be infected before a vaccine is widely available. I'd rather have people not get sick and die while waiting for a vaccine.

Going to be tough going forward to keep the public on board. Well ventilated businesses closed but schools (and schoolbuses) still up and running. If you have seen highschool kids leaving a local school at the end of the day well you just shake your head if you are a small business owner.

They constantly try to escape from the darkness outside and within

There have been relatively few cases traced back to in-school activities. Schools should be about the last things to shut down.
