Why, when over 90% just ends up in a landfill anyway? I whole concept of recycling plastic was an advertising ploy by oil producers.

what's recycling?

My understanding is that there is already enough material in the recycling pipeline to last for years and they will not accept anything unless it's in absolute mint condition. Which means most probably only accept material from industrial sources where the material is relatively pure.

Yes because if I didn't my landfill bin would fill up too quickly.

There is more optimism in using recycled plastics for building materials than re-use as plastic.
Eg Trex decking etc.

And in Africa...

Honestly I always thought that's what plastic gets recycled into. It makes sense to me that a material such as plastic is easier to make from scratch than to try to remake it from existing, and that existing plastic is reused in other ways.

We don't generate much plastic waste at all. Other than milk jugs there just isn't much. I recycle all metals, either through the recycling dumpster or scrap metal place. What plastic there is goes with the aluminum.
I don't bother with glass or paper. I don't have much of either other than cardboard and a lot of that has pizza cheese on it.
I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Yes. Here, we get curbside garbage, recycling and organics pick up. Recycling is sorted in to paper, plastic/metal and glass bins. Takes all of 30 seconds every two weeks.

Yes, we have zero sort. So I just put anything in there that I think might be recyclable.

I'm fairly certain that one barrel for trash, and another for recyclables (paper, metal, glass), with trucks doing two separate runs, is a scam cooked up by Wayne Huizenga and his Waste Management cronies

DISH is how we do it.

Why? Because when I drop off recycling the plastic roll-offs are right next to the glass roll-offs. That said, our center only takes #1 and #2 plastics which we very rarely ever have (detergent, shampoo/soap).

Also, these 'recyclables' might actually cause more pollution than just dumping them in the local landfill. You have to consider the energy cost of sorting, shipping to the other side of the earth only to be incinerated releasing a toxic mixture into the atmosphere because there are almost no environmental regulations.

This is similar to - do you wear a mask? Recycling at the very least get plastics, etc. in fewer places (even if it is a landfill), instead of thrown all over the place. Recycling. What’s the big deal? What’s so hard about that? What’s it going hurt?

How lazy can you possibly be?Somehow, we have managed to have far greater outcomes for recycled materials in our province. A much smaller amount ends up in the landfill, and we have an average contamination rate of around 6%.

Ha! Didn't even see the link on my phone at first. I read it.
As I mentioned above, there are places that have much better recycling programs. Why hasn't the US, king of innovation that it is, figured this one out yet?
