Good YouTube channels
Honestly over the past couple of years, and especially since YT has become a lot more watchable (i.e. a better UX design) on most current TVs, I've definitely resorted more to YT than to other content sources.

One of my favorites was suggested in the LR sometime last year or the year before

Bad Obsession Motorsport - Project Binky

In a similar vein, Sampson Boat Co - Tally Ho

Both of these are multi year channels/projects that are unfinished (and with regard to Tally Ho, likely remain unfinished for the foreseeable future).

I also enjoy channels like Andrew Camarata (not sure why, nothing particularly exciting). He's a property maintenance guy in NY state somewhere but he does a lot of various projects for himself and customers.

Basically any channel that has welding, metal fabrication, or woodworking I also dabble in.

Any other suggestions?

I really like Comics Explained. He does ~20 minute videos on different comic story lines from Marvel, DC, etc. It's kind of nice to get a wikipedia like overview of the plot. It has helmed me enjoy MCU stuff a bit more knowing the background and being able to catch little easter eggs

Sam the Cooking Guy is hysterical and has us cooking more.

Ryan van Duzer if you like bikepacking.

I blame Tom Green for me now looking for a capable overlanding vehicle. I was never a fan of his comedy back in the day, but he is oddly entertaining with overlanding and exploring.

Ozzyman Destination F'd is great. If you watch Wavy Boats, then I bet you know what I mean when I refer to the Blue Top Legend.

Doug Linker - he does carving projects. He has some videos where he carves without talking, and others where he explains what he's doing. Gnome Home and Gnome Supply Run are very entertaining

Amazing Places on our Planet - Great video (lots of drone) of amazing and beautiful places.

Our Million Adventures - Family where the guy works from home (IT, I think) so they try different areas and experiences. Very informative and great video even though he has a small following. He recently climbed Mount Ranier and had some beautiful video of the sunrise from high atop the mountain.

Funny Animals Life - Funny dog and cat videos.

I can't stand Sam the Cooking Guy! I find him to be incredibly obnoxious, and his videos are too long and drawn out. But I do love cooking channels.

My faves:

NOT ANOTHER COOKING SHOW:
Millennial aged dude if Italian descent (like myself), cooks a lot of classic Italian dishes, lots of modern food truck type food too, his videos are shorter, to the point, he is passionate and his food is freaking amazing.

For BBQ it's hard to looks further then Malcom Reed How to bbq right.

For Mexican I watch villa cocina. She's legit.

Another great Italian one is Buon-a-petitti. It's a guy who films his Italian grandmother cooking the classics. You can barely understand her, but it's hard not to fall in love with that tiny, old, wooden spoon clutching Italian nonna.

Spain On A Fork has great Mediterranean recipes, but I have to watch on mute. I cannot stand the host's voice.

Long Chile was a silly place.

I think that Youtube is one of my favorite things about the internet. Need to change a water impeller on a 30 year old outboard, there is a video for it. Want to watch people canoe the Boundary Waters, there are videos.

Want to watch terriers hunt rats, hunt for rocks, catch fish, climb mountains - there are videos.

I think it is great in that people can create their own content and if it is interesting people will watch it. They don't have to pitch an idea to someone who can't see the appeal. Produce it, and you can find out yourself if it is a good idea.

Ha, Ryan is great but can you imagine spending 5 minutes in a tent with him. All of the talking and happiness would drive me insane and I've spent weeks with 3 people in a 2 man tent! I have a feeling John usually left Ryan's adventures because he couldn't take it anymore. My dog is Mira's identical twin but not nearly as cool.

Airplane stuff

Flightchops
Mentour Pilot
Mikey McBryan, Plane Savers - haven't seen much from him lately but a great rebuild series of a DC3/C47 (Can't remember if it was a civilian to military conversion or vice versa)
Mike Patey - the scrappy build is long but the final results of his unique wing haven't been completely shared yet - the pitching moment doesn't change with slats & flaps - potentially ground breaking.
747gear - he can get a little wordy though
310 Pilot - just good narration
Trent Palmer - great videography mixed with some very good musical scores.
After watching the STOL comp livestreamed @ Oshkosh - I've added a couple more, but I'm still getting a feel for them.
Pilot Emilie - WestJet Q400 pilot

Canadian Politcs
Pierre Polievre - great orator, to the point, unyielding in committee - same for his NDP counterpart Charlie Angus.

Cooking
I can only add
All Things BBQ
Aaron Franklin (which I don't think has added a video for a while)
Gordon Ramsay - not the tv show outtakes.
Mattey Matheson
Kenji Lopez-Alt (Food Lab guy)
Mariano's Cooking - EdBikeBabe - he's local to you, I own 2 of his aprons lol

Builders and Science (these 2 seem to overlap)
Xyla Foxlin - new, it was here cedar strip canoe that got me following her
Veritasium - rabbit hole find - lots of basic STEM
Neil Tyson deGrasse
Adam Savage

ETA
Carpentry Stuff
Bourbon Moth - great ideas, somewhat humorous
Fishers Shop (loaded with bad dad jokes)
3x3 Custom - Tamar

Fishing
Shaka Fishing - shore fishing on the Big
Darcizzle Offshore - Florida fishing couple

If any of ya’ll are into guitar playing, check out 501chorusecho on YouTube. He is a session picker out of Nashville who has been posting free lessons regularly since the beginning of the global pandemic. It is low budget, not highly produced or anything like that…basically just him in front of an iphone in his garage….but the content quality is excellent…my opinion anyway.

Tom Bukovac is kind of the current king of the session players. His Homeskoolin’ series since the pandemic started has been awesome.

If you like his stuff, and guitar stuff in general, you might try:

Tim Pierce Guitar

Chris Buck
Paul Davids
Josh Smith

And plenty of others I’m probably forgetting.

2 pages in and no mention of AVE?

If you like tool tare downs general shop nonsense this Canadian has your number. I would not recommend watching at work. Start with one of the following.

Manly man skills repairing stripped threads.

Impossible on a milking machine threading a potato.

A recent find is zip ties and bias plies. Another Canadian that bags on old trucks and cars. About every other word is censored now but hearing a Canadian rip of a string of cuss words was entertaining while it lasted.

Colin furze for building random shit. Currently working on digging a tunnel from his house to his shed and under ground bunker.

Wood working

Wood working for mere mortals

John Heize…
More that I cannot remember.

Yeah. Tumblehome doesn’t post a whole lot but when he does it’s really high quality. He works for the CBC putting video together. The camping videos are just a side hobby for him.

Lost Lakes guy posts quite frequently. Not as good quality but he’s improving with time.

He’s hoping his channel becomes a money maker for him so he’ll have a lot of content.

I'll confirm my complete dork bona fides.

In Deep Geek - pretty much what it says - goes way far into depth with Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Witcher, etc.
Viva La Dirt League - lots of mockery of RPG's, bosses, etc.
scholagladiatoria - all you wanted to know about medieval weapons

and a bonus - Julie Nolke - worth it just for the telling her past self about the pandemic videos - ask high Julie is also pretty good - she is Canadian though so ...

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I thought I was the only one over 20 consuming Youtube. This thread makes me feel better. Already added some to my queue. :)

Binging with Babish - named after the character who was White House Counsel for the Bartlett Administration in The West Wing. The host prepares various meals from movies, TV shows, or pop culture. Recommendations - the Taco Town episode and the pasta aglio e olio from Chef

Townsends - a guy in Indiana (I think) who makes food from 18th century US. Really fascinating. He has a penchant for adding nutmeg to EVERYTHING. Recommendations - the stinging nettle soup episode and the food of the enslaved episodes.

Spindatt - dude in Canada who has lots of little projects he does on bikes. Trends more towards gravel end of the road spectrum. Recommendations - any of the episodes with the Rawnstercross build.

My Mechanics - I think this guy is based in Switzerland. He spends unreasonable time restoring old items that he finds or is given. He will literally mill his own bolts rather than buy them from the store. Luxuriate in the attention to detail here. Recommendations - the oil can episode and the vice episode.

Veritasium - This channel came up recently in the lavender room. Great science channel. Recommendations - the most common cognitive bias episode and the bizarre behavior of rotating bodies episode.

Wouldn't be shocked if some of my efforts to get my FILs pontoon onto their trailer is posted. You have about a foot of wiggleroom to make it happen.

Add in a breeze blowing the boat sideways and it takes about 10 tries to get the thing on the trailer.

One of my favorite things to do is sit at one of the waterfront restaurants m, have a few snacks a few drinks, relax and watch the clueless try to dock their boats. Appreciation for the folks that k is what they’re doing, but that is far from the majority.

Last week a dude with a 21’ boat tried to dock in a 24’ wide slip that is designed to hold two medium sized boats. He came in bow first but by the time the dock girls finally had him snugged in he was stern to. It was amazing.

Mediocre Amateurs is a great channel for outdoor adventures. Two guys, Danny and Christophe, along with other friends, who go around the Western United States climbing mountains and other outdoor adventures. For example, they summit Mt. Ha. We watched that one earlier tonight. It was good to see him back on the water.

Another channel that we've enjoyed is Northern Scavenger. Not sure if it has been linked before.

This is 30 day 600 km trip on a 6 hour video. They do have it broken up into 20 shorter episodes - but we watched the long one over several nights. The guys endure a lot and never show a cross word or negative attitude. Nature provides the only drama with these guys, which I really like.

I don't know how they stayed there with all the flies and mosquitos. I know they had the bug jackets, but when they were portaging or eating, the bugs were eating them alive.

Years ago I was fishing on a big river and we were catching bass in one of the feeder creeks. The only thing is that the flies were eating us alive while we were in the creek. I told the guy I was with that the fish just weren't worth it. He agreed and we left. But these guys were in it for 30 days and nights.

Agreed. That was a good video. After watching that video, we watched Xander's version and several of his other videos. I kind of like him more than Lost Lake, but not by much. They're both good, just different. Xander plays up the "we're out of food" thing a bit more but does a really funny job with it.

After watching the portion on Lake Superior it makes me want to do a 2-3 trip along the shoreline. My problem is that since I don't live up there it could easily be messed up by weather since I would have to schedule it ahead of time.

I was back in Minnesota for about a month and took a few days at the end to relax. I seriously thought about doing a BWCA trip, but I was beat from a hard month of work. Me and a buddy (fellow adjuster) drove to Voyageurs National Park for a day, but it was rainy and the water was very high - I wish that we had driven to Superior instead.

Yeah. I didn't even think about what it would add to the cost of the trip just to buy two drysuits which would be a "must".

It would be easier to schedule if we lived nearby, though it only takes a minute for the weather to turn unexpectedly.

We've gotten a lot of enjoyment from the various channels that we've found after you turned us on to Tumblehome and Lost Lakes. Canoe the North is another of our favorites. Their dogs add a lot to their videos.

If you liked Painting With John on HBO, as I did, there's a playlist on YouTube of Fishing With John curated from various sources

https://www.youtube.com/...r4y6LpBQNuFg3uzUPkqc

Quote:
Fishing with John is a 1991 television series conceived, directed by and starring actor and musician John Lurie, which earned a cult following. On the surface, the series resembles a standard travel or fishing show: in each episode, Lurie takes a famous guest on a fishing expedition. Since Lurie has no expert knowledge of fishing, the interest is in the interaction between Lurie and his guests, all of whom are his friends.

I really enjoyed Outdoor Boys in the past. At this part of my life i don't have time for the Youtube, Netflix or Facebook. Feels like all the people around are living a full life, enjoying the summer and barbecues and i am only running somewhere all the time. The newborn and studies is a very intense combination for a normal human being and i don't even write all the papers i need (thanks to https://letsgradeit.com/ ). No idea what would i do without them and without grandparents which take the little one for occasional walks.

That was good, kind of wish they would state the cost of that pair of shoes because I can't imagine it's inexpensive.

I had forgotten about all the cooking channels mentioned in this thread. I've found a pretty good one that I like. Sort of a "how to" but mostly just making popular stuff from scratch. He's grown quite quickly (I think from 1-5m + in less than a year) and has some fairly big companies/relationships at this point. Like this is a Shake Shack promotion, basically. I'm sure they paid to work with him for this video. Pretty impressive. The "but better" series is good, also does a "but cheaper."

I love this channel and Tysy Tube ( https://www.youtube.com/c/TysyTube ) which does basically the same thing. You start watching it and think "Huh. I feel like I could probably do that" until he has to machine some tiny metal part and you realize the equipment, experience and time that goes into it. Fascinating channels though!

i just started watching these after Chris Miller mentioned them on his show this week. Two twenty somethings, Greg and Victoria cycling from the top of Alaska to Argentina over several years. Bikepacking, but much more about the adventure than cycling. Beautifully put together videos, great story telling...there is a reason they have a few hundred thousand views. I've only got to 3, and the one where they have completely misjudged the onset of winter in Canada and need places to stay is wonderful.
