Been a long wait. Hopefully it lives up to the hype. The renderings and leaked photos look very cool. Trying to go after some of the Jeep market.

Also interesting that Jeep dropped a bomb about a potential Hemi Jeep Rubicon Wrangler V8 today. Trying to steal some of Ford's thunder.

Not a fan of the IFS on the Bronco over the Jeep but reliability issues with the Jeep and death wobble may make the next new car purchase steer me toward the Bronco. Will wait a few years to see if it has an issues.

The original launch date was supposed to be last week. 7/9. OJ's birthday.

Quote:
The reveal of the all-new Bronco lineup will now happen on Monday, July 13. This is instead of July 9. We are sensitive and respectful to some concerns raised previously about the date, which was purely coincidental.

"Purely coincidental" my ass. Still hoping the have a white one for the launch.

They Raced it in Baja earlier this year. Glickenhaus ran in the same class. Too bad the Glickenhaus is a couple hundred grand.

Hemi Jeep won't happen.

New Bronco looks pretty sick. Checks a lot of the boxes people were clamoring for. IFS is better for what most people think they wanna do with regard to off-roading anyway, and the ride is massively better in all other situations anyway.

First Edition 4dr can be ordered starting at $59k! Mid 2021 delivery.

Other than the sport, they look pretty good. They do a good job of capturing the spirit of the original. I will say there were a few spots in teh video where it looked like there was a severe lack of flex in the front wheels.

If they undercut Jeep, it will be successful.

They are going to be more than a Jeep.

Here's the crucial information: The two-door, base-model Bronco with no options will cost $29,995, including the $1,495 destination charge. That's a little more than the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sport's $29,790 price (also including destination), but the base Bronco will likely be a bit less Spartan inside than the Jeep. Those interested in a Bronco with four doors will find a $34,695 price after destination, or $3,395 more than the four-door Wrangler Sport.

Huge mistake on Ford's part, IMO. Jeeps are over priced and what they are offering for the base doesn't make up for even a slight premium. They have to over come Jeep's reputation as "the off road" brand. I would have under cut Jeep (even at a slight loss) for a couple years to gain followers.

Also, the doors look HEAVY. They might be removable, but wow. Curious on the weight there.

Great looking vehicle. If it weren't for the fact that I'm dead-set on a truck for my next vehicle I'd get one. Even the base trim looks significantly nicer than the Jeep both inside and out and I don't thing you can discount the universal availability of Ford's safety suite (I think it's called "CoPilot") so there's some value there. I can see these selling very well.

I thought the looks were very meh. Maybe it's the colors they chose, but these new Broncos looked very plasticky, with some odd proportions. Reminds me of the JEEP Renegade or the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Like they took a real Bronco and softened/smoothed/melted it a little.

Not a fan.

I like it. Jeep has had a firm grip on that market for a long time. This should give them some competition. I've always loved those 2-door Tahoes and Yukons that ran from 1990 to 1999. Maybe GM will come out with something to compete with the Bronco.

Pricey for the 4dr high-level trims.

I have said I would never buy a new vehicle. Yet, I've been contemplating a recently off-loaded Bronco after they come out (given there's no major issues), because I really like an option to a Rubicon and I like Fords. I think I need to actually see and drive one. I need space, and with the 4dr I'm curious how easily the rear seats are removed and how flat the space is. I don't mind the non-solid front axle, but they seemed to emphasize "tech," a la "everything is as easy as our push buttons." Anything that is "tech" is unconditionally fraught with flaws, so I am a bit skeptical.

I am going with "wait and see." I might opt for kitting out a Ranger before going Bronco, but I am coming currently from full-size truck perspective.

Assume you have ruled out the 4Runner.

I wonder if this will push the 4Runner to update as it has been years since they did anything as they really have no direct competitor.

I think for dedicated off-roaders (Jeep Wrangler Rubicon) the % is a little better than that. They are so useless for any other task that nobody buys one unless they actually want to do some off-roading, or else they are a total poseur. The Land Rover club I belonged to didn't have many newish vehicles showing up for the trail rides but as the vehicles get older they get used more to their design purpose. But your comment brings out the reason I would never consider the Bronco....while I'm sure it's brilliant off-road, it's not capable of any of the other jobs my Land Rover performs...long highway road trips, towing my camping trailer, or carrying 7 passengers plus luggage. And if I did want a dedicated off-road vehicle it would be something I don't mind bouncing off rocks and making ugly and has broad support for parts, repairs, accessories, etc. Maybe in 10 years when used parts are available...not sure how many common parts it has with other vehicles but being a Ford I'm sure it's quite a bit.

With regards to parts, the engines are common and the automatic transmission is common. I would imagine HVAC and infotainment will be common.

Funny how life experience changes perspective. I've had three Fords make it to 210K miles with nothing but oil changes and a few minor worn out parts. Most reliable cars I have ever owned in a line of Toyotas, Chevy's, Nissan, Jeep, Honda, and Mercedes.

I guess your experience was different. Try the Expeditions. They last forever.

I want to like it but have to wait to see what it looks like in person. From the video's it looks too much like a matchbox car or some kids toy blown up to life size. Too plastic and futuristic with the paint job and not what I like in a rugged vehicle.

I have a Jeep Rubicon and you can't beat it for taking off the doors and windows and driving on the sand or through the trails in the mountains. The mechanicals on the Bronco are fine but with the IFS I won't be taking it to MOAB anytime soon. Although reports are it does fine even on rock crawling.

I am not a fan of any Turbo in an engine I want to last 200K so will see how those play out.

Going to keep my 60K in the pocket for now and wait for the Bronco to go through a few cycles and/or see if Jeep does come out with the Hemi V8 Rubcon.

I like it - minus the eyebrows over the wheels. It’s a shitty stick to inherit a ragingly popular vehicle and be tasked with an up date. You either move forward, or the model is wiped out. And in a Land Rover fan.

You’re not going to please everyone. Hell; you’re probably never going to please the died-in-the-wool fans, but this seems a good compromise. Or I don’t care enough about the Bronco... change the shapes of the Land Rover and I will fucking cut you!!!!

Yeah, I agree on the turbo thing. I was really surprised when Honda made the Accord a turbo. People that buy Accords are often people that like the idea of running a car 200+K, so I could see them losing sales to those types--me included.

I currently have a Honda Accord in my stable but no turbo. 4 cylinder, bombproof kids car. It's only got 80K on it for now. Hoping the CVT doesn't give me problems as we get to some real mileage.

Yeah, that's one of my worries with turbo engines. I've gone back and forth endlessly looking at pickups and keep gravitating back toward naturally aspirated engines for reliability purposes. That said, there are plenty of Ford EcoBoost F150s with well over 200k miles on the clock and they're running just fine.

You guys are gonna have to get over your turbo hangups, there are just too many upsides. The days of big displacement are likely gone, smaller engines with turbos are just much more efficient. I am currently driving a Mercedes with a 4.7L biturbo V8. The previous engine in this car was a 5.5 naturally aspirated V8. This smaller biturbo makes more power and gets much better gas mileage. It is rated at 410hp and I easily get 28+mpg on the highway driving at speeds well in excess of the limit. My previous car was a BMW with a 3L inline 6 that makes 250hp and can only manage 23mpg or so.

When a 3.5L engine can take a giant Expedition to 60mph in just over 6.5 seconds you can't talk me INTO a NA engine. The "little" 2.7 that is going in the Bronco is currently in our Edge and it is very feisty stock on 87 octane.

According to my search of the Bronco website and a fan forum the max is 3500 lbs, which is disappointing given that the Ranger goes up to 7500.

Bummer...yeah, from what I understand the I5 Volvos are pretty legendary. We acquired a '96 850 Turbo wagon just last year for our son to use in college, with just under 100K miles on it. My plan is to take that well over 200K. I actually hope my son decides to buy something different when he graduates this winter...I want to keep the 850 for myself :-)

Our newest car is a 2016 VW Passat that has the I4 1.8L Turbo. I've been quite impressed with that engine as well, especially with a somewhat heavy car like that. Driving it around, you'd never guess the engine is that small, especially when you get into it...and in steady freeway driving it easily gets ~35mpg. Again, impressive for a car that size.

So, yeah...I've got no qualms about turbo engines.

No doubt. We drove Ford F350s for work. The turbos blew all the time. Really sucked when it happened all the time. I have also owned a few. My dad was a huge Ford guy. When I was buying my first car, he strong armed me (he was cosigning) into going with his buddy at a Ford dealer. Wanted a Subie ended up with a Focus. Same deal he got for my sister. POS. Engine mounts would crack if sneezed on (I hammer my motorcycle not my cars) and a few other issues. I have just seen so many Ford issues its been a huge turn off for me.

The new Bronco has a few things going for it. I really do like some of their ideas. In a couple years if it proved worthy I would be tempted if they weren't so dang $$$. Jeep really turned me off with their pricing. I had a CJ-5 as my first Jeep and now we are down to a '92 Wrangler. Both bare bones. Got the YJ for $4k back in 2001. Could probably sell it for more than that now. The fact that new Jeeps go for as much as they do blows my mind.

They really seem to be going for the more money than sense crowd. Most of the Jeep Rubicon owners don't buy it because it's the most offroad worthy. They buy it because it's the most expensive. It is that perceived value thing that Land Rover ran into when they unveiled the Discover years ago.

Meh, a Land Rover clone with a BMW engine. For soccer moms and footballers.

That is exactly the point.

Land Rover dropped the real Defender.

Hard core overlanders are going to buy a Jeep or a Grenadier in order to get the solid front axle. The new Defender and the Bronco are for soccer moms. Grenadier is for purists.

However, having said that, I agree with jkhayc that for 99.9% of users, IFS is best.

the Bronco video shows it going over "some" rocks with the IFS but I would like to see it go over some of the harder obstacles in MOAB. However, you are correct and 99% of the Bronco's and even Jeeps for that matter don't need the articulation or ability to climb rock walls.

I am starting to like the new Bronco more and more each time I watch a video or learn about it. Could be a good daily driver that can handle most offroad stuff I plan to do. Will keep the Rubicon for crazy mods and rock crawling and park the Bronco next to it for daily driver and general trails.

I have owned 4x4s all my life, including jeeps, broncos, etc...

One thing I have learned over the years is that "technology" and fancy electronics, bells n whistles and off-road use do not mix well. This Bronco has an ass-ton of buttons and dynamic adjustments and screens and shitz.

I'm sure it will be great for the first xx,000 miles, until it isn't and after that it will be a money sink of problems and stuff not working...assuming real off road use.

I think this Bronco will be a big hit with the soccer moms and urban explorers who want to look rugged and cool outdoorsy, but the vehicle will only see the asphalt.

I just wish they hadn't discontinued the Nissan Xterra a couple years ago which is what I currently have and that thing is bomb-proof.

If i was interested in it, i'd be waiting a few years on getting one to see how it pans out.

I'd guess that the majority of Jeep owners would have bought their JK or JL even if it had IFS. So by that measure the Bronco can get into the market.

Removable top (and doors) is probably the key for most Jeep buyers (whether used or not). I just noticed that the doors and top of the Bronco can be removed. Bronco will cut into Jeep market for sure. And your post is good illustration.

Last year Jeep Wrangler outsold all Ford cars except Escape (barely outsold Jeep) and F-Series Truck (4x Wrangler sales). So maybe makes sense for Ford to go after that market.

If i was interested in it, i'd be waiting a few years on getting one to see how it pans out.

.

completely agree with you. I plan to mod the Jeep (2017 Rubicon ) like crazy ( new tie rod, drag link, Dynatrak Axle, Axle Shafts, Iift etc) but if I get the Bronco it will remain stock. The Jeep will be driven by a high school kid to and from HS everyday (about 1 mile total) and the Bronco will be a daily driver with a commute of 75 miles and parked in a parking garage.

When I got the jeep ( mainly for my son) we test drove the 2018 JL and I originally bought one. It has the electronic dash, and a lot more bells and whistles then the JK. I told my son, "When all this goes out it will suck and cost a lot to replace"

For a number of reasons I took the JL back after one day and got the 2017JK. The JK dash is much simpler and if stuff goes out, don't have to get it fixed. Not so digital.

The Bronco fits the bill for a daily driver, looks tough and can do a little off-road right from the factory. The Jeep will be an offload beast that requires a lot of money and "fixing" things but can handle MOAB and Ouray toughest trails. Different purpose for different vehicles.

I currently have a Ford Expedition and it's too damn big. Wants something a little smaller and "not as nice" so that it's not much of a big deal when the interior is all covered in sand and river/beach water from swimming and kayaking/SUP. I like that you can basically hose off the interior of the Bronco. :-)

Downside is the my Expedition rides pillow soft and the Bronco will presumably ride like a Jeep... like shit.

I want to know if they have a model that will make a nice tow car, behind this 4X4 dream of an RV?? As soon as my ship comes in, I'm getting this and whatever 4x4 tow car that will pair with it nicely.

Isn't a wrangler the ultimate tow behind vehicle since you can completely disengage the drive train thus reduce/eliminate wear & tear?

Ya those are really good, but if this new bronco can also do that, then I would go for a little smaller footprint in back. The greatest ever tow car was the old Suzuki Samurai. Haven't looked in ages, but getting old ones of these were pretty hard, and the value really stuck because of that one feature, light, 4x4, and just simple..

That's a pretty sweet rig. Would probably drive a lot nicer and safer than a fifth wheel, even with a tow car. I'm seeing those go for $160k... honestly that's pretty solid for a Super C. If I was going that route I might go with something like the Jayco Seneca which is based on a Freight Liner chassis. Service and repairs could potentially be more expensive but those engines are built to go 1,000,000 miles quite literally plus I like the idea of a higher cab in such a large vehicle.

There's so many ways to slice the cake.

Tbh I'm very tempted to build my own 5th wheel based on a 20' gooseneck trailer. I have a very specific layout and construction in mind that I just don't think I'm going to find stock.

Keep your JK. I know you said you would, but I thought of your characterization of the Bronco for "a little offroad" when I saw the video posted below.

I've watched some videos of the new Bronco's off-road. They do well (they should as these are pretty much factory sponsored videos), but the IFS just can't keep all four wheels planted in a diagonal off-camber situation and they often lift a wheel.

This is a video of an FJ, but it shows what can happen when you can't keep all four planted. Not a super technical trail either.

I agree, it looks really cool. But, I have an FJ. It is an absolutely fantastic vehicle. It is a 2008 and is the only vehicle I have ever owned with which I simply could not part. Still looks good. Still runs flawlessly. Around 70k miles.

The only thing cooler about the Bronco is the ability to remove the doors. That would be cool on the FJ. But, gotta say, looks like they just tried to slightly update the FJ.

Saw one this morning. Major disappointment. If if didn't have big Bronco lettering on back I wouldn't have given it a second look. Looked like a Range Rover or Nissan SUV. It was sport model 4 door.

Or was it a joke? Was it really a Range Rover? Is the Bronco out?

Edit: LOL. It is the new Coke. I see the Bronco Sport is not the same vehicle as the Bronco.

That makes sense.

There are two different versions. The sport (which you saw) and the Bronco.

The former is a standard compact SUV with fancy options.
The latter is the off-road body on frame version that everyone wants.

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot that the Bronco II was concurrent with the F-series Bronco.

They should call this new Bronco Sport the Bronco 2.1 and the other new Bronco the Bronco Sport.

Ford finally has been accepting build orders over the last couple of weeks after a series of delays and deadline extensions. Ultimately, your place in line is determined by the time stamp of your preorder. My preorder timestamp was on July 19, 2020. Four or five days after preordering opened.

My order was put through this week. Due to my config and timestamp they don't expect my Bronco to be delivered until December or so. People with a timestamp before me will start seeing vehicles trickle in this summer. Amazing that a couple of days earlier preorder results in getting a vehicle months sooner. Demand has been insane from what my dealer told me.

Ok, that makes sense, I read your previous post I didn't see the first time. Glad you didn't like the sport, I didn't want to insult you buying a Bronco because I wasn't impressed with the ones I saw either. To me they're a different take on the Flex.

The Bronco Sport seems more or less available. My local Ford dealership has a few on the lot for sale. The configurable Bronco model, which is really the only desirable one IMO, seems to be trickling out slowly. I haven't actually seen one in the flesh yet.The Bronco Sport is a crossover that looks tough but isn't terribly capable off-road. The Bronco is an SUV that actually is tough and should be highly capable.

The Bronco Sport is really just a nicer Ford Escape really. Same chassis.

The Bronco is built on a truck platform and obviously a lot bigger and more capable.

I don't believe there are any Ford Broncos out in the wild yet except maybe a handful that Ford are doing roadshows with. Some dealerships will be getting test drive models in the next couple of months. My understanding is the earliest any customer will have one will be July.

I was parked next to a Bronco Sport for my Covid shot today. Really cute- but does look like and escape and a Range Rover had a baby. Doesn’t look super burley. I still have high hopes for the regular Bronco.

I went with the 4 door Black Diamond model with the V6 and some other upgrades. I wanted the marine grade interior that I can just hose out. The only models that have that are the Black Diamond or Badlands. I had no use really for what comes extra on the Badlands model for $6K more. Additionally, the Badlands GVWR with the V6 was too heavy to configure it with roof racks for kayaks and such. Not sure what makes it heavier than the Black Diamond.

I just got the "baby" bronco and really like it. Its the badlands edition built more for less technical off roading than the other sport models (suspension, extra GOAT models, ground clearance).

Sport is built on the same platform as the escape whereas the 2/4 door bronco is built for true off roading and body on frame with 4x4. the sport is all wheel drive with the GOAT mode

I wonder if you can sell your "spot" to someone. There are some boats (Freeman) that have multi-year waiting list and build spots. People will put a deposit down to reserve a build spot and then sell it once it gets close. I wonder if you could do the same to someone wanting to buy one now.

I think they are messing with you dude. I just checked and this is not a valid VIN. I became suspicious when I counted and saw that it had 20 characters, not the usual 17.
