Oh boy!!! Well, I can't say that I disagree with their physics and wind claims and velocities. But, without a doubt these things are highly against the rules as they are an added fairing piece.

No doubt, I'm sure someone will try to run these at a race at some point.

Coast down tests? These guys can't afford, or know anyone with, a powermeter?

BTW, if you're going to make it a "fender", then why leave off the parts that actually make it effective as a fender??

But they were identical riders on identical bikes with the exception of the fenders. And the exception that the riders were not identical. And except their bikes or their wheels were not identical. And except for their clothing. And except for not keeping their head position constant with that gopro sticking up in the wind...as seen by the video changing views from up the road to looking down at his aerobars.

Looks like that is the OGIO Mach 3 Motorcycle backpack (with No Drag Technology)

I somehow missed it because i was fixated with the abomination "aero fenders" on the bike (at least the back one *might* help with the skunk tail)

I do the same thing as them, just slower

True. They are most likely a big aero improvement. But until they are built into the bike frame somehow, they are illegal.

Or, perhaps they have aero tested them and the results weren't exactly what they were looking for...I'm just sayin'. These are a cleaner design than their first iteration that's for sure. In general, I find increasing frontal area, no matter the shape, is unlikely to produce good results, but you never know.

Their target market is not the few that know better....

"To test out (and prove) their system, Null Winds paired two identical aero tri bikes in a roll down test into a moderate headwind, then repeated it switching riders. The result was that the Aerodefender-equipped bike was always faster, on average 7 seconds faster per kilometer!"

The wheels also have some sort of "spokey dokey" thing going on. Is that another aero drag reducer, or just for style?... ;)

I'm just impressed they were able to keep the headwind so consistent.

I'm kind of surprised that Camelbak hasn't tried to market an aero version of their backpack. I've seriously thought about wearing one in a long race.

The old Racebak isn't a terrible option for that. Better is probably doing like the Pro cyclists were doing and wearing it on the front (before they banned that) but of course you have to take it off somehow.

Nope. That's a parachute like on drag racing cars. His speed is so fast that brakes alone are insufficient to slow him down in a reasonable time. When you come to a red light you simply pull the rip cord.

That's likely an aero backpack from a crotch rocket. A legit thing in that world if you commute at 100+ mph on your sport bike or something.

I don't see how this is a thing because it won't be legal in any kind of race, and maybe not even a fondo. And most commuters that are THAT concerned about speed or a head wind will likely adopt an e-bike instead.

I guess a sucker is born every minute.

Just thinking how much transition time it would take to put on. BTW, love how the turbulent air behind his neck just slams into that empty space without a proper aero helmet to fill the gap. He'd save more time with just an Aerohead from Giro.

That bike was my first thought when I saw this.

I can see what they were thinking, but the execution looks way short of the mark from my experience.

I've been tasked with testing these, along with the fenders, this week (I assume I must have done something really terrible in a previous life to deserve this...).

Just reading the claims on their website is eye opening. I had no idea pro racers were uncomfortable riding wheels with rims deeper than 35mm, or that deeper rims were "generally unmanageable, and therefore not safe for general use":

Should be interesting...

I had just enough time tonight to get in a very short test run with the fenders. I climbed a few miles up Hwy 39, flipped it, dropped into a tuck, and waited for my 20% increase in speed. All I got was an elapsed time and maximum speed on the lower side of average of my last 10 descents down the same section, and nowhere near my PR (which was set using those unsafe 60mm rims...)

He must have felt a right twat riding down the road looking like that. Can you imagine riding past him - you would be struggling to ride from the tears of laughter rolling down your face. FFS.

It’s a guy riding a bike with fenders and a backpack. That makes you want to laugh at him???

I would laugh because he took so much effort to be fluro yellow/green, yet his socks do not match. And because i am a cruel human being.

The aero pack would cause me to sweat a lot. Most human sweat comes from the back, and it would not help.
