First off, tremendous race.

Did you back off during the last portion of the marathon knowing that you didn't have to run as hard and still win?
Edit: Thanks for doing this.

TJ,
Congrats on a fantastic performance! It was a pleasure racing beside you this past weekend. Very inspiring
I have to ask...how does your bike ride compared to a standard design? Would it take some getting used to in terms of feel? It may be a next purchase....

I was pretty fortunate to see Andy Raelert running the opposite direction with about 5 miles to go, and at that time had over a 2 mile lead on him. I thought to myself, you just won the race, now don't lose the race. I switched from being offensive with the race to defensive with the race. I took my time and walked the last aid stations, made sure to take care of all the details with my nutrition. A lot of the spectators wanted to high five and celebrate (as far back as 10k to go), but I told myself, no celebrating until you can see the finish line.

TJ - great race. Was a pleasure to track and watch it online!

In terms of your Dimond bikes, do you think the rider realizes the performance benefit(s) on the bike or the run? That is, is the bike faster than other standard two-triangle designs or does the increased comfort of the beam set you up for a better run?

Also, thanks for doing an AMA. It is amazing to have people of your caliber open themselves up to questions from us peons.

Congrats on your win and thanks for doing this.

Regarding your position on the bike: have you tested it in the tunnel and, if so, what sort of savings do you get compared to a more conventional position with your forearms horizontal?

Split-wise, you were remarkably close to you race in LP - 50ish swim in both, 4:33 bike LP vs 4:26 MT, and 2:56 run LP vs 2:54 in MT. http://home.trainingpeaks.com/...acid-winning-race-re

How did you feel the races compared? Which did you perceive as being a better bike and/or run? Having never done either course, I can't put it in perspective. You smashed the bike course in MT, but then again, in LP, the bike course record is held by Steve Larsen, so perhaps being so close to that was actually a better ride.

Just curious to hear some thoughts on how you felt the performances at each of your wins compared.

Congratulations. And thanks for doing this.

We got a little anxious when you shut it down toward the end. Awesome day though.

I'm just curious how hard a ride like that really is.
Are you riding at a heroic IF? Or is your FTP so freakin' high you are noodling around?.

Great race and thanks for the opportunity!!

How often during the bike leg did you come out of your aero position? Is handling an issue on some of the steep fast descents in the last section of each loop at IMMT? Do you find you really need to train to hold that position for a 4.5 hour ride?

Hi Ryan,

I get that question quite often. Unlike the softrides of years past, the Dimond actually feels and rides like a normal bike. You can't tell it is a beam bike when riding it, unless you look down at the rear wheel. The bike is stiff and smooth. I would love to see you riding one. The other big advantage of the Dimond is the vertical vibration dampening. While you won't notice a bounce in the beam while riding, the beam will actually absorb bumps in the road with a few millimeters of flex. I have two bulging discs in my lower back and riding a Dimond has really saved my back from the stresses of riding all the time.

Both!

We tested the Dimond in the Faster Wind Tunnel in Arizona and it tested as faster frame than the competition HERE but the comfort of a beam is undeniable. It is just a few millimeters of vibration dampening but that is huge when you consider the stress transferred through your spine with a traditional double diamond frame. I've had all of my sub 3 hour marathons after riding a beam bike.

I have tested my position in the wind tunnel on a few occasions, I came up with more aero positions than the one I ride, but they were unrealistic for me to hold for 4.5 hours. My current position allowed me to ride a bit higher and open up my hip angle slightly. I saved about 10 watts at 30mph over my previous position flat arm position.

Yeah baby! Amazingly almost everything was the same as mine but I took one less salt tab... and that cost me three additional hours over your time. (He-he!)

Hey Jordan,

Thanks for the inspiration to do this thread. My races in Lake Placid 2011 and Mont Tremblant 2014 were nearly identical. I told Cliff English (my coach), that Mont Tremblant was small notch better than Lake Placid. Placid was not a wetsuit swim, and I actually pulled Luke Bell out of the water. Mont Tremblant was a wetsuit swim, and Luke Bell pulled the entire front pack out of the water. I swam harder in Placid, thanks Luke! The bike was pretty close to the same power and HR on both races. Mont Tremblant has shorter steeper hills than Placid so my max power for 5s to 1min was quite a bit higher than in Placid. The run in Placid has a long hill going from town to River Road which makes for a greater speed variance over a mile (or kilometer) split compared to the shorter steeper hills in Mont Tremblant, they are probably nearly identical in difficulty but I think Placid has more elevation change.

I feel the Tremblant course suits me a little better than Placid because I have pretty good short punchy power for an Ironman athlete (on both the bike and run). I do however prefer a non-wetsuit swim.

It has taken a long time for me to get back the same form I had in 2011, but that is part of the sport. I just needed a dedicated training block where I was healthy and focused to make it happen.

Nice bike! My IF was right about .8 which is what most of the top guys hold. My FTP is 360, I've had a higher FTP, but I don't train my FTP as much as I train my 2 hour and 5 hour power for 70.3 and Ironman racing. It feels easy at the start, but doesn't feel so easy at the end.

TJ, most of the guys have asked the questions I want to asked, but as discussed, I think the big differentiation you have is aerodynamics coupled with the benefits of beam technology that allows you to race the bike leg in more comfort and potentially run better off the bike. Jurgen Zack said the Softride saved his career. Crowie is currently saying he is unable to stay aero at desired power for the full 112 miles. We joked that at mile 80 everyone is out of the aero sitting up like a sail. Certainly the masters age groupers are in the same boat as Jurgen Zack and Craig Alexander, just a loot slower. I am not sure how you do it, but any thoughts on trying to quantify the comfort benefits...no idea what metrics could be used other than many N equals one testimonials. I can say my best running off the bike in long course racing came when Softride sponsored me back in the day....but then again, it also coincided with my prime running performances 20 something years ago. In any case, glad you guys are giving beam technology another push. Congrats on a well earned race win and I hope you can have similar success as an innovative engineer and company CEO trying to change the way an industry does business after the UCI almost killed beam technology.

I was curious so added it up,

about 1500 cal for breakfast

about 1500 cal on the bike (350 per hour….seams low, but big breakfast)

and I can only see 700 cal on the run….I'm sure he had more than that,

would be interesting to hear a bit more detail.

Serious question here. These "pee breaks" you speak of:

You stopped at the side of the road?
You slowed down a bit and let it fly?
You whizzed at 26 mph on the flats?
Waited for a convenient downhill?
...or other?

I thought (and still think) that pros in contention for the win never stop moving to pee. But what do I know?

Great race and thanks!

I never peed on the bike until IMMT 2014. I was on the first loop of the Lac Superior out-and-back and was being passed by a guy standing up and going uphill when I noticed he was peeing. Then I saw another guy do the same thing. I was busting a gut at that point having been eating and drinking plenty when I decided I had to pee or else so I let her rip on a downhill coming back and then 3 other times all on downhills. You kinda have to force it and it doesn't really feel like much is coming out but man does it feel great. This, eating properly and not getting any blisters during the run were what helped me have a great first IM. BTW: Only 1 BM about 1-hour during the run which is pretty common for me during my long runs.

I was able to see the DIMOND at a recent race expo and it looks very striking in person. I did notice that the bike was not sporting an integrated front brake or stem, which I believe has become something of a standard for this price point. Is this a goal for future iterations, or is this an intentional feature to facilitate aftermarket adjustment/modification?

Great race! Thanks for the AMA and, of course, Congratulations!

Hi Ian,

I come out of my aerobars quite frequently on a course like IMMT, anytime I am going less than 12 mph I typically come out of my bars. I also often just need a little break from the position to stretch my back so I will stand on some of the climbs. Typically I shift into a harder gear then stand for a short while and stretch out my legs and back. I train on a pretty similar stretch of road in Iowa where I will switch from being in my bars to standing. I'm not out of my bars on the descents at IMMT. I do need to train to hold my position, but I do most of my training on my Dimond and spend most of the time in my aerobars. I don't think I would run very well if I "HAD" to stay in my bars for a full 4.5 hours, but if that was a requirement I would train to do it.

Congrats on the race! Also thanks for the note earlier. Looking at some data as we speak :) Interesting that you hold off till about 12 mph to come out of aero (that adheres with the model very well), you'd be surprised out how many pros are out of the saddle (even on short TTs as soon as the hill hits even going 20+ mph..).

I felt strongly last year that it was a mistake to make all the Ironman events 2000 points, and I think it is a mistake to score 5 races in a year. If the true goal is to get the best 50 guys in the world racing in Kona then they should score a max of 3 races (and only 1 70.3) Andy Raelert is a perfect example, he was hurt most of the year and finished 3rd at a Regional Championship, but is not qualified for Kona. I'm pretty confident this would change if there were only 3 races scored. I would like to see Ironman offer prize money at all events and structure the races into different series. I would be in favor of a two or three tier system. Similar to Nascar with the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, they are both Nascar and have some cross over, but the big money and most competitive races are in the Sprint Cup Series. I can go more into detail in this if it is appropriate. I do think bigger purses and deeper pay outs are important and I think WTC is making positive and progressive changes.
-How will that affect your race selection in the future? Racing in Kona will always be a goal, so I will have to make a race selection for a course that suits me well and has enough points for me to get in. I don't want to race more than one IM outside of Kona, but I may need to for points.

Thanks for the interest in beam bikes. The Dimond is actually quite a bit stiffer than the Zipp, and lighter. Overall it is similar in shape only, the Dimond is really a very modern SuperBike and uses the latest technology. The Zipp 2001 was the bee's knees back in the 90's but is pretty outdated right now. My mechanics were begging me to finish the Dimond prototypes so they could stop having to find solutions to keep my 15+ year old Zipp running in top shape to compete against the modern Superbikes. The Zipp used elastomers in the beam for vibration dampening, and had height adjustment in the beam/frame interface (with no real seat post). The Dimond is rigid, carbon on carbon interface between the beam and the frame, no elastomers, and uses a real seat post for height adjustment. We can get way more specific if you want, but this probably isn't the place. contact us via email if you want to know more.

I haven't gotten the chance to watch you race since Placid in 2011, which I thought was a stellar performance. Looks like your running has improved, which can be tough for those already performing at such a high level. My question is- what do you attribute this improvement to- more cycling miles behind you? A key run session? Just experience? Congratulations again, dominating at a Championship event must feel amazing!

I've heard this (FTP vs 2hr or 5hr Power) before from some others that are very strong out there.

We know how to do FTP intervals, but 2hr or 5hr? As far as training that, do you just ride as hard (and as smooth) as you can for the 2 or 5 hr ride? Do you pick a % like, maybe 85% of what you think your FTP is and push that? If it's easy then swag up? If it's hard, then swag down?

Is this unrealistic for the solid, but not elite, AG'er? Wondering if, in your opinion, this type of riding once per week might need too much recovery to bounce back strong for the rest of the week, from a mere mortal's perspective.

Sidenote....winning on your Dimond is the best advertising you could ask for, don't you think?!?! And, yes, I'm saving my pennies for one.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us!

TJ, I think it is entirely valid for this to be the place to provide product details. Don't view it as blatent marketing. If you are divulging details on product design, then it is simply education of the market.

Coming back to my previous question, you said that you have ran sub 3 after every bike split after you got a beam bike. Can you share your 10k and open half marathon times during this stretch (if you happen to find them). Using an N=1, it might be interesting to see if you are running at a higher percent of your Vdot. I am going to assume that your aerodynamics are on par with any superbike (or better), and that the biggest benefit you will offer age groupers is the ability to stay aero with less distress for late in the game and better running off the bike. I also noted that you ran 115 psi....so you ride at the higher end because the beam allows you too?

By the way, love the soccer shin pad padding for the cups....why did I never thing of that when I first saw Boone Lennon racing RAAM with an early aerobar contraption and tried to make my own with pipe metal and kitchen sponges for pads and hockey tape (circa 1986 as an FYI).

TJ, did you ride the dimond in a non mantis style position? (what were the differences, does it affect the run?) Is the mantis because of your disc issues? I have disc issues and currently angle my seat downward to deal with this, I feel the mantis position will help and I can make my seat level again.

On the swim, I think I about holding my space and being vigilant with sighting to make sure I am not letting gaps open up. It is often difficult because you can get lulled into a slow pace in the draft and not realize there has been a split in the group. Vigilance is my keyword for the swim. On the bike I think about my data first. I watch my HR and Power very closely to monitor how my system is performing. I make sure to keep track of the timing of my nutrition, but I also have to think about the tactics of the race. I have to gauge my effort against what the other competitors are doing and what the time splits are in the race. Aggressiveness is my key word on the bike...but only after being patient during the early part. On the run, I think about my pace and cadence. I closely monitor my cadence and make sure I am staying on top of my splits. I don't look at my HR on the run, but I record it. I make sure to count the miles properly for my nutrition stops and I try to focus on my run form as much as possible (forward lean, cadence, relaxed arms). Perseverance is my key word on the run. I try to balance the low points and the high points by not getting too amped up when things are going well, and not get too down when things are not going well.

I prefer a 1 loop course on the swim and bike, but like a multiple 2 or 3 loop run courses from a spectating perspective. I enjoy being able to see the same people more than once. Single loop bike courses are preferred because passing Age Group athletes on the bike is often dangerous and creates a lot of congestion on often narrow roads.

I will recovery for a couple of weeks before doing one more small training block. I am only racing Kona, nothing before then.

Hi Devashish,

Great to catch up with you in person in MT. I do believe there is a significant benefit gained in comfort from riding a beam bike. While the Dimond beam is rigid, it does have millimeters of flex from the cantilever design. This millimeter flex is enough to relieve a significant amount of stress on your lower back. I personally have two bulging discs that have been a problem for me for years, and are something I have to monitor on a daily basis, so taking any unnecessary stress off my low back is ideal and the Dimond does just that. I have all of my sub 3 runs after riding a beam bike.

The lead designer on the bike was former Zipp Engineer, David Morse. I worked closely with Dave to make sure the bike had all the necessary features I wanted. Dave did the CAD, and mold CAD. Our engineering team has worked together closely to solve some design and manufacturing problems. We use a trade secret molding process and actually build a lot of the equipment we use for the manufacturing/molding. I had a few requirements for the bike (like vertical drops, and detachable beam for travel) that were used in the design process.

Hi Mike,

I haven't raced at the Elkhart TT series since I set the record a few years ago, but they do still put on the series. The reason I last raced was the prize purse for setting the record, but there is no longer a prize purse and I don't specifically train my 15 min power anymore. Still think it is a great series and love having a series in town for athletes to test themselves.

Hi Colin,

Execution on the run is really about practicing that execution in training and that means practicing your pacing and nutrition strategy. Owning a Dimond probably wouldn't hurt your run, but really if you just practice your long runs with pace and nutrition you should be able to quicker lower your run split. Making sure you don't ride too hard will also be a big step in running faster. Keeping your IF (Intensity Factor) on the bike less than .8 or so will make a big difference. Best wishes.

Hey Borden,

Hi TJ,

Awesome race was awesome!!!!

Quick Q: which are the bike WOs that you think help the most for a IM/70.3?

The entire event (IM) is like "death by 1000 cuts" and the best race is minimizing all those cuts and losing less blood than the other guy. - Dev

TJ,

Congratulation on the win and amazing race.

You have mentioned in an answer you gave about improving running off the bike (colin.m.martin) with keeping your IF at or under .8 which you personally nailed 100% yourself. You posed your FTP as 360 which gives you and IF goal of 288 and your NP for the race was 289; can't get much closer than that.

How do you look at the importance of VI to the success of your run as well? I also noticed from your numbers (NP 289/AP 279) that you had a VI of 1.03 which means you really limited the spikes of power and road pretty consistently for a course with a good number of punchy climbs. Do you set out with a VI goal range as well? How do you adjust your climbing power ceiling depending on a course such as the difference of types of climbs from IMMT to IMLP?

Thank you for all of you honesty in your answers and being so forthcoming with your numbers; it really helps put things into perspective and to learn.

Best,
Brian

2- Do you ever perform a submax (or max) 2 hour test?
3- Where did you store 12 powergels?

Hi TJ, congrats on IMMT! Also this Q&A thread is great. makes the world feel small. I have some questions about your helmet.
There is not allot of info available for the Casco Warp online, except from track riders who simply say it is pretty much awesome.
Triathlon is different though, so here goes:

- Does the helmet get hot quickly or does it ventilate well? Do the vents help?
- How was the experience using it in hot climates? Like in los cabos earlier this year?

Thanks!

Daniel.

Hi TJ.

I am doing IM 70.3 Worlds in two weeks in MT. We're doing basically one of the two loops you did for the IM there. I've heard the last 12 or so miles of the loop is pretty brutal as far as the hills in that last out/back after you come back by transition. I've heard from other people to really save some for that section of the course to avoid a bonk.

What basic strategy would you prescribe for the difference sections of the bike course??????? Thanks.

TJ, we are now 6 days out from race day. How is your recovery going? Some related questions.

1. How many hour of sleep do you generally get in a week and do you sleep more or less post IM.

2. Do you do anything special with your diet during recovery weeks?

3. How early do you add intensity back on the swim and bike and when do you start running?

Some questions related to running your company:

1. What special challenges do you guys have competing against global giants with massive marketing budgets and offshore manufacturing in Taiwan.

2. What is your vision for Dimond 5 years from now?

3. Will all your bikes use beam technology?

4. Would you expand into the touring market with a different price point frame?

5. If/when the UCI changes rules for the hour record would you like to see your frame under a rider trying to take a crack at Boardman's superman position record?

The Dimond appears it might travel easily. Are the rear dropouts removable? Is the beam easily removable? Do you make a travel case for the frame?

The frame looks small enough to travel without an airline oversize baggage fee, true?

Could a polyurethane vibration dampener fit between the frame and the beam to offer extended frequency absorption?

At the Los Cabos press conference, you and I discussed doing some more wind tunnel and velodrome aero documenting of the frame. Perhaps December?

I started with a bottle of TYR Endurance Sport for the bike, then had about 1 bottle of water per hour of racing. On the run I drank just water until mile 10 when I switched to coke and water (and RedBull when available). I would take 2 cups (sometimes more) at every aid station.

We designed the Dimond to be the easiest superbike for any mechanic to adjust and fit. The TriRig brakeset was the best option to make this happen. We will most likely introduce an integrated front end for future models, but the original Dimond will always be remembered as having a standard fork mounted brake that is easy to adjust and fit.

1) What does a typical IM build week look like for you? I ride about 300 miles (with Saturday) being a long hard IM ride, swim 20-30k, and run 50 miles with Sunday being a long IM run.
2) How did you get your bike power to that level - volume or intensity (or both)? You can really only race an Ironman around 80% or less of your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) so if you want to raise your FTP, do lots of VO2max intervals to 20 min FTP intervals. Once you FTP is higher, focus on working on your 5 hour power doing long rides at the proper 80% intensity or so.

what do you attribute this improvement to- more cycling miles behind you? A key run session? Just experience?I actually had a pretty similar run to Lake Placid, but slightly faster at IMMT. The small improvement was more likely from the years of Ironman experience, my training sessions are pretty similar to what they were in 2011. I did ride with slightly less power which could also translate to slightly faster run.

Hi Kevin,

If you are training your FTP you would likely do a lot of VO2max intervals up to 20 min intervals at or near your FTP. To train your 2 hour or 5 hour power, you would do intervals at roughly 90% of your FTP for your 2 hour power and 80% for your 5 hour power. These intervals should be similar to how you train your FTP. If 2x20 min is a standard set (I actually prefer 2x15 min), for training your FTP that is an interval of 1/3 of your FTP and a total work time of 2/3. I would tend to work at a rate slightly lower than 1/3 and 2/3 but something in that range.

I don't find them helpful or practical to training for an Ironman. Not that I don't enjoy running races, I just don't often plan on scheduling them into my season. I am able to stay aero for a long time on my Dimond and believe others would able to as well. I run 115 psi on my rear tire, but I hardly consider that the higher end of tire psi guys are running, especially for 74kg. I run 115 psi in my rear tire because I feel it is optimal for performance.

I won't divulge any specific workouts because that is not fair to my coach, Cliff English, unless he wants to post them on here. As I said earlier, training for 70.3's involves lots of intervals at 90% of your FTP and training for an Ironman involves lots of intervals at 80% of your FTP. If you do a 5 hour ride with 3 hours of intervals at 80% of your FTP, you will be a stud.

Hi Brian, There really are no secrets to pacing an Ironman well. If you are training on a hilly course similar to the one you will race on, and you do intervals at your IM pace, you should pretty quickly be able to pick up how much VI you will have. You need some VI because on a hilly course you should be going slightly harder on the uphill and slightly easier on the downhills, but keeping it lower than 1.05 is pretty big. If you are racing a flat IM, then your VI should be even lower, but it still depends on the wind direction and speed as you should ride slightly harder into a strong headwind and slightly easier with a strong tailwind. I used the website Best Bike Split to determine what my AP and power ceiling should be for this Ironman it was pretty accurate. I did go slightly higher (but still less than my FTP) just to fracture the group.

I had 3 hip surgeries to repair torn labrums in my hips (2x right hip, 1x left hip). I fractured my sacrum. I have two bulging discs in my back sometimes slip and cause so much pain I can't bend over and tie my shoes. I had some tendonitis in my glute med (related to hip and back problem). Everyone deals with some of this. Being able to train without injury has been one of my challenges the past few years.

1- For your 360 FTP, do you use a one hour test or one of the estimated protocols? I don't actually do a FTP test at all. I keep it at 360 because I don't train to raise my FTP and I've certainly had it higher than 360 but at the moment I don't feel I could do more 360 for an hour. I have a pretty good understanding of my abilities based on how I perform my short intervals and how well I can perform on group rides like the shootout in Tucson. If I am putting out 360 NP for 45 min of the shootout, then that is pretty close to my FTP.
2- Do you ever perform a submax (or max) 2 hour test? I only do a 2hour test when racing a 70.3, no actual power test and certainly not all out.
3- Where did you store 12 powergels? I keep my gels in flasks mounted to my between the bars aerobottle. I use 3 flasks each with 5 gels in them and use 3 different flavors.

- Does the helmet get hot quickly or does it ventilate well? Do the vents help? The helmet does not have many vents at all, but it does leave the back of your neck and your ears exposed which are two crucial areas for cooling during a race.
- How was the experience using it in hot climates? Like in los cabos earlier this year? I don't mind wearing it in hot conditions, but I also don't have much to compare it to. I did some core temp testing with Crowie in Kona a few years ago and used the helmet for that. I was able to effectively keep my core cool even with the Casco, but it really depends on hydration levels.

Hi Ben,

I used the course profile from the guys at Best Bike Split to come up with a pacing strategy and would recommend you do the same. The course if definitely very challenging the last 12 miles, but if you pace correctly you can the most out of those hills.

1. How many hour of sleep do you generally get in a week and do you sleep more or less post IM. I try to sleep 10 hours per day, 8 at night with a 2 hour nap. I sleep about the same post Ironman with the exception of maybe a couple of days of marathon 12 hour sleeps or 10+2 hour nap.

2. Do you do anything special with your diet during recovery weeks? For 3 days I eat whatever I want, so I had donuts, cheeseburgers, cheese curds, ice cream, etc. After that I will switch back to my plain old diet which doesn't vary much.

3. How early do you add intensity back on the swim and bike and when do you start running? I will add a bit of intensity after 2 weeks and start running of Tuesday of the second week.

Some questions related to running your company:

1. What special challenges do you guys have competing against global giants with massive marketing budgets and offshore manufacturing in Taiwan. We obviously don't have the deep pockets of our competitors, but we do have all our operations under one roof so our turnaround time is fast and we are very agile in our domestic manufacturing. We are positioning ourselves to be triathlon leader, but it takes a more direct message to our consumers.

2. What is your vision for Dimond 5 years from now? In 5 years, I see Dimond as one of the top 3 bike companies in the Kona bike count. I see us making a few models of bikes and expanding Ruster Sports into some other bike technologies (not just frames).

3. Will all your bikes use beam technology? No, we will put out regular double diamond frames as well using similar aerodynamic principles.

4. Would you expand into the touring market with a different price point frame? Yes, but that is a ways down the road for us.

5. If/when the UCI changes rules for the hour record would you like to see your frame under a rider trying to take a crack at Boardman's superman position record? Our director of egineering, David Morse, is more passionate about the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) record.

Hi Damon,

The Dimond is extremely easy to travel with. My major design input on the bike had to do with making it easy for mechanics and fitters, and easy for athletes to fly with the Dimond. The rear derailleur hanger is removable as is the beam. I make a case called the Hen House which meets the airlines 62 linear inch requirement for regular luggage and avoids the bike fees. The Dimond packs into the Hen House with plenty of space for all the rest of your triathlon gear.

We have toyed around with the idea of some special vibration dampeners being placed on the beam/frame interface that we would actually lay up in the carbon, but haven't finalized anything yet. This would offer extended frequency absorption.

I hope to test the Dimond in December with the Alpha Mantis in the velodrome.

Cadence is very important. The faster you run the faster your cadence should get. It is a neuro-muscular development that needs to take place. When you run at pace you should work on keeping your cadence above 90. the best runners in the world all have a cadence over 90. if you are not running fast, your cadence won't be as fast.

I have tested my position in the wind tunnel on a few occasions, I came up with more aero positions than the one I ride, but they were unrealistic for me to hold for 4.5 hours. TJ, firstly thanks for sharing and well done. Second, do you still use an aero bottle between the bars in your preying mantis position? Do you know if such a placement is still (compared with flat bars and bottle) largely aero neutral?

OK, great answers....I am sure my FTP won't go up to 360W, but I'm going to give the 70 hour sleep week a shot one of these weeks....maybe this one is a good start. Nice to also hear about your company vision and also leveraging the domestic manufacturing over an assortment of product lines. All the best.

Edit: I have to say, this thread has been fairly interesting as it has covered topics ranging from race execution to physiology, to manufacturing, business strategy and product design. Pretty well covers everything that ST cares about....heck there was even some talk about running!

Agreed! Notable point, he only runs 50 mpw...as a pro...while training to crush an IM. (But bikes 300 and there is the take away)

Now I honestly think we should cut him loose. He has answered A LOT of questions and I hope he, and more pros, will do so after big races. I can only imagine it gets, maybe, a tad bit tiresome after a week when you are starting to think about getting back in the swing of things. Your insights have been great, now stop listening to us and get back to training. You can answer some more questions after your next win. (Yes, I have just spoken for about .003% of ST)

You're a pretty quick swimmer, would be interesting to know your swim background, i.e. did you swim growing up, in HS, and in college??? If you did swim in college, where??? What were your best times in the 200 free, 500, 1000, and 1650, if you can recall??? Did you swim 200/400 IM??? I've noticed a lot of top triathletes are former IM swimmers, prob the "jack of all trades" thing that started early. I think Potts swam the 400 IM at the Oly Trials in 1996, as well as the 400 free and 1500 free.

Again thanks for doing this and taking time, a lot of useful info.
Also congrats on your race, I was there as well and you pass me on the last 500 m for your finish. Pretty impressive!
I had question regarding what did you do to adjust to cooler temperature/overcast/rain on race day? I come from Colorado and felt a bit challenge to lower my cal/ hr on bike and water, also had a cramp/ spams on calf on swim. And I had a major stomach ache on run on second half. I had a good race (enough for kona Q)by adjusting, slowing down (5 min stop bathroom)and letting stomach digest but was hard.
Within that how do you adjust for Kona temp and humidity specifically on nutrition?
Again thanks,

TJ,

Congrats on the great performance!

I have a question for you. How important do you think it is to train with the bike setup like it will be on raceday (wheels, bottles, etc.). Do you think that it is important to train on the bike at a similar speed to how you will perform on raceday or do you think that just training by power is sufficient, even though it may be 1-2 mph slower without raceday setup.

Thanks!

1. What data do you display while on the bike?

TJ,

In your comments on bike performance and power output followed by a good day on the run, you reply with great detail on the bike numbers (which is awesome, thanks!).

But taking a step back for an age-grouper looking for some big gains, listening to Seton Claggett from TriSports on TriathlonResearch.org, the bike is probably less of a worry than just having good form and a stellar bike fit, and then go on to really improve running (Like Gwen Jorgensen just crushing the run.)

Did he just spill the beans give all triathletes an 'in for big wins' and tick off bike vendors everywhere?
