M47 years old 6' 4" and 210 lbs. Far from too thin I know my BMI is still 25.6 OVERWEIGHT! Mom cracks me up! I do have some muscle that I've spent the last 30 years trying to ADD and know I'm trying to lose it. Crazy. I told her sorry but I'm going to keep losing weight....

Somehow in today's culture it's actually more frowned upon to be fit and skinny than it is to be overweight.

6' and 138lbs checking in here.

The goal is to asymptotically converge towards aerobic nothingness. When you turn sideways and disappear, you're there.

Visited the grandparents back in April, while training for IMTX.

Grandma kept giving me seconds, which was strange, until she explained that I was too thin...at 5'10" and 145lbs. I promised her I'd gain some weight back after the race. Promise fulfilled. Up to 150 now.

This. I get that about once a month usually in a restaurant or grocery parking lots. And also "you are so lucky". No. Lap swim before work, and then either a 2 hour bike or 1 hour run later in the day has nothing to do with luck. And that's just weekdays.

Down 40lbs+ since getting into triathlon - 6'1" - 170. I've started getting the questions about whether its obsession and if I'm unhealthy. No, I finally got my weight and dietary habits under control. I keep trying to explain that there is a difference between being skinny and being fit. Anyway, in truth there are far worse problems to have than insecure co-workers questioning your weight loss while they continually make those "you're so lucky..." remarks.

I don't get the obsession to be skinny. Skinny don't not always equal fast. I'm 6' 168-170. Sure I could lose a few pounds but not going to starve myself to do it. I will just work on my conditioning to get faster. Has worked for me so far.

That is so TRUE! I burned over 12,000 KJ's on my bike last week and watched and counted every calorie I ate lest I gain weight.

Yep, 6'1 and at my race weight of 170 (just started a 2 week taper..so lets call that actual race weight closer to 172...hold on..finishing off this guacamole...OK..173lbs). At a work training earlier today and saw a co-worker that I have not seen in 2 months. First question "hey..what are you doing..you're way skinnier than last time I saw you". I'm roughly 10lbs lighter than 2 months ago. He was looking at me like I was from another planet and wanted to know my secret..was it Ironman training?!?! Nope..pretty simple - just dont eat a bunch (or any if you can help it) of bullshit..oh and training helps.

Reminds me of last year in my lead up to 1st IM. Dropped 40lbs or so after cleaning up my diet and training for 7 months. I had SO many people tell me I was "too skinny". Always thought that was weird, had a few moments where I thought "damn..maybe I AM too skinny". Past that now as I realize the graphic shared above pretty much nails it.

No one** said shit when I was 40lbs heavier, pounding beers, and eating terribly while not exercising but evidently being "skinny" (remember I said 170lbs and 6'1..not exactly 0.0 body fat) or "fit" raises a few red flags.

Hats off to ya, keep fighting the good fight.

Quick edit: **my wife certainly said shit about this condition :)

Dev, wouldn't it be more aero to appear as nothing from the front but be visible from the side? Or does that depend on angles of yaw? Where is jack mott when we need him?!

Yep, it's the standard protocol. Here's my race weight checklist:
  • Can easily count your ribs in the mirror
  • TDF rider forearms
  • Easily see your check bones
  • Easily see your six pack abs and not do any ab work at all
  • Family/friends/co-worker think you're sick because you're so thin

I know this board/thread is mostly males and females are 9x more likely to have eating disorders, but this thread is in some ways sick.

As somebody who lost 50-70lbs via diet and exercise I love being thin, but I am careful it does not become an obsession.

Take any "too thin" comments as compliments and revel in them just don't overdo a good thing.

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

It's frustrating when people say things like the comments a lot of you mentioned. I have overweight people say the same things like "You don't get it, you can just eat whatever you want" or "You're just so naturally skinny." They have no idea that I used to be a fat boy in college and work my ass off (literally) to get down to the weight I'm at and to be in the shape I'm in. Now I'm in my 30s and people even younger than me say those same things and you just want to shake them and tell them to put the large coke down and go for a run.....

Um ,in many cases , yeah many of us Can eat pretty much what we want and gain no more than 5...15lbs at most? To the gen population that is nothing when they are dealing with values like 50...100++lbs

Few years back I had a friends visit who I had not seen in 3 years. I hadn't been training for a year or so and was eating too much and told them so before they came
First thing buddy says when he sees me is 'wtf?!! I thought we were going to get to see you all fat and you just look the same'

And come on, we all know that guy who eats fast food everyday and does zero exercise and yet remains rail thin so yeah... Some of us are lucky

Nope, the excuse so many over weight use. I gained 8 lbs in 3 days at Disneyland by eating WAY more than I ever eat at home.
Bottom line if you put it between your teeth, and too much of it, you will gain weight, even me. I have yet to see a fat person eat
that I just do not shake my head and say if I ate that much food, I would be fat too, no matter now much I work out.

I get the "too thin" comments for the most part from people who are not active at all. They just assume that it must be high metabolism because otherwise it could be their own judgment upon themselves of why they aren't at a lesser weight too. People want to blame something for weight issues (other than personal exercise or eating habits). To be fair, there are some medical conditions that cause weight problems despite good efforts to control it. But I feel too many people don't really try to control weight or lead a healthier life. So it's much easier to blame heredity, comfy couches, desk jobs, advertising, etc. Those might be contributors, but shouldn't be crutches to support bad choices.

This thread is about weight, but I get more comments about training time. "Must be nice to have so much free time" is a common one. As if I'm not as busy as they are. At least that's the insinuation. Dude - put the remote control down... set the chips aside... step away... walk outside.

I'm a hypocrite though; as a MOP triathlete I could maybe change that by not spending so much time on slowtwitch :)

After the last IM I did a couple of years ago I can remember standing beside my son looking in a shop window, when I noticed in the reflection, some old geezer, who looked like a street person in need of a decent meal standing right beside him. That was a cruel shock, I thought I was ripped.

So if any of you on this thread get the occasional coin passed their way with a sad smile from a passerby, check out your reflection.
If you are shopping in the childrens section, it's not necessarily a good thing.

So in 3 days you ate 28,000 extra calories? Nearly 10,000 extra calories per day on top of your base rate?

Sure, and Michael Phelps eats 12,000 a day and stays rail thin while doing nothing but swimming..................

Everybody gains weight when they travel, but it's not all added fat. Couple of days at home, regular bathroom habits, normal diet, you'd be back to one pound gained, tops, for 3 days.

Just sayin'. :-)

Yep, you are right. But if I had not stepped on the scale I go home, and then went back to my diet, over time food like that will stay on the body. I got to 190 in my life
so I know things can stick on my bones if I let them.

Point is most skinny folks are not that way without a LOT of work. Most fat people are that way with a lot of work eating tons.

True story: My boss told me I workout too much and have co-workers say I look sick. This was while we were at a conference with "mandatory" socials and open bars. I told them they drink too much and something bad is going to happen. Then I got a "memo" to evaluate my priorities and lifestyle. Shit hit the fan when I called and told them they can't intrude on my personal life, require me to drink, and that our owner who is a 36 time Ironman finisher would not be happy to hear their opinion.

Short is the other.

I'm both. And bald.

Needless to say, I catch a fair amount of crap. I've started giving it back though.

I blame hotel builders... that 2" gap under the door to a bathroom that is 100% tile, it's like you are pooping in a ported sub box when your SO is naked in a bed 4ft away.

Oh totally. By far the best part about coming home is the joyful reunion with your home pooper. Home is where the [f/sh/he]art is! :-D

Sort of...bank management. I'm executive level and the two guys above me (CEO and chair) both like to drink a lot. When we are traveling they get a rally going that lasts usually til midnight or later and close down the hotel bars. The 8 direct reports under me all find it a great time to let loose.

It's getting toxic, but like I said there isn't shit they can do about it when I'm on personal time and have an owner that supports fitness 100%.

I've always liked the way Slowman said it best:

"The trick is to keep losing weight until your friends and family ask you if you've been sick. Then you know you're within 10 pounds. If they start whispering to each other, wondering if you've got cancer or aids, you're within 5. When they actually do an intervention, you're at race weight."

To paraphrase Slowman, you only need to worry when your doctor diagnoses you as being sick :-)

Awesome thread! I thought I was the only one. I usually get "you look like a concentration camp survivor". And "how do you get so skinny".
I just say I workout 2-3 hours a day and am a vegan. The response I get "oh. I can't do that"

True story here : Few years ago ( was like 17yo) Both parents had stopped smoking for a year by then, stopped having like 4-6 soda/day, barely any fast food and I had begun training for the first time of my life and that, everyday. I had lost like 30-40 pounds in 6 months something incredible by anyone's standards. An incredible life turnover that resulted in an amazing change in my physique. Went from 36 sized pants to 31-32.

And one day, I arrive home from school. Mom crying at the table, dad there too and I'm seriously wondering what the **** is happening!??! Did someone die or anything!?

And my parents tell me to sit down and so I do.

my mom : We believe that you may be anorexic Alexandre and that you have a severe problem, you lost so much weight recently we're concerned about your health!!

Me, totally shocked, I just burst out laughing, crying and laughing endlessly and I just explained them that it was the results of a lot of changes in my lifestyle, I was still eating my fill, just better, less and started training. Still took them a good 6 months to have them stop overfill my plate and almost get pissed at me whenever I wouldn't eat much lol...

I went from 5f11 180 to 145pounds back then, now I'm at about 150 but I have a bit of muscle mass now.

These are crazy stories that illustrate so much of the obesity/over-weight epidemic issues in the US.

As a Canadian who has lived in Asia for the past 14 years, my 180cm/72kg/22(ish) BMI seems quite normal.

While on a trip to the US this past week....I can't count the number of times I was called skinny.

Another interesting note...in Asia...when I bike Nike/Adidas running shirts....I'm size M...in America, with the exact same style shirts, I'm S. At Under Armour, even the small "fitted" shirts are a very generous cut. This kind of upsizing of clothing only makes it worse.

Eat right, train smart, don't get obsessed with a number on the scale but keep an eye on it...healthy fun living!

I totally agree. I'm a 30(m), 5'8 vary between 150 - 155 (bmi of about 24) and small boned. Occasionally people give me a hard time for being skinny or tell me I look like a cancer patient and I live in an active area in the U.S. As for clothes, I decided to buy a new button down shirt a few months ago. I was shocked to find that in a "regular" fit I'm an extra small. It's really frustrating at times but at least my parents don't tell me I can stop losing weight now anymore. Maybe they just gave up!

Actually bought jeans yesterday (30 and 31 indicated, I'm actually a 32 with a tape). Store owner said I have a lucky "sale" size. 34 waist, you almost always pay full price.

Try shopping for shirts when you have a larger frame.

I wear a 17/34-35 shirt (going off memory). I'm 6'1 200lbs, looking at a shirt I was buying a few weeks back it said that this would fit up to a 44" waist for the regular. I have shorts on that I measured 2 weeks ago, actually after seeing the chart someone also posted, to be ~35-36". Even with the most fitted shirts I can find in that size I'm usually tucking in several inches of fabric in the back. With a regular shirt I look like a damn pirate, if I actually had to wear button down shirts on a daily basis they would all be tailored.

So those of us who are even big for this site still don't fit in what is normal..

I get the 'ol "you have such a high metabulism [sic]" or "wait til you're 30" all the damn time.

Bitch, if I can eat 3500 calories per day it's because I burn 3500 calories per day.

Silly casuals :)

I always got the same thing "wait til you're 30". Now 32 and the weight has still not come. Maybe it's really 35.

Somehow in today's culture it's actually more frowned upon to be fit and skinny than it is to be overweight.

6' and 138lbs checking in here.

Little by little, as our country becomes more obese, people have lost the ability to identify normal, fit and overweight. Fat and pudgy is now perceived as "normal" and normal is healthy.

Baloney, look at the stats. Hundreds of thousands of Americans die every year of, essentially, complications stemming from obesity. These problems outweigh the problems going the other way, which you reference, by a LARGE factor. Walk around the mall and count the number of fat people you see and divide that by the number of people you see who are truly anorexic. Fat is killing people at an insane rate and is costing our country trillions of dollars in unnecessary and totally preventable healthcare costs.

Yea, and it gets worse as you get taller. I'm 6'4" and ~175. It's impossible to find clothes that are long and slim enough. Basically everything I bought had to be tailored until I started buying from European companies.

I think on one or more occasions when I was 150 at 5'8" *which isn't what some people have measured out to be* would visit my folks and would end up buying me groceries full of meats and calorie dense foods before I went back to college. It was nice, but kind of odd at the same time.
