What race would you like to do, but can't easily get into?
obviously this is the case for a lot of IM races. but, it might also be the case for a lot of other races. norseman, for example. so, other than kona, can you list the races you'd like to do if you had a pretty firm knowledge you could gain entry? any of you answering can list as many races as you want, as long as they are races you would very likely truly enter if you could gain entry.

We've got relatives 2 miles from transition. But good luck getting in. I guess I'll volunteer and stand in line after the race to register, like everyone else who really wants to race IMAZ.

Roth is definitely number one on my list. With the invite a friend system they are putting in place for early registration it's making getting a spot that much harder. Norseman is a definite yes for me as well. Probably both races I'll try to finagle spots for in 2015.

Norseman for sure. Ultraman. I would love to do some international marathons as well that have caps to US/ other countries. Like London. Berlin would be amazing too, but I don't know if they have restrictions.

Hardrock 100 Miler is the first that comes to mind. I did apply unsuccessfully for entry about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that my body is up to that sort of running anymore.

Ironman Brasil. If you're registering the minute it opens, you have a shot. Trying to get two or three people in the same family registered requires everyone in the same room or on the phone, filling out the forms on different computers, then counting down to finalize at the same instant. We've tried two years running, but have had to abort because one or more people wouldn't get in. We'll try again next year to register for 2015.

Roth 2016 for three racers.

Maybe I should read some race reports, but in my imagination this race just seems like it would be a blast from start to finish. I am an East Coaster, but like many I have fond memories of cycling & hiking around the bay area. Hopefully my lottery fee won't be wasted.

let me rephrase. pretend that this is something i could actually help achieve on behalf of some of you. i'm not asking this question frivolously. no, i can't stick you in the olympic 10,000 meter final. and no, you wouldn't really want to be stuck there. so, again, excluding kona, what race that is hard to gain entry to - because it fills very quickly or it's on a lottery basis and your odds aren't good - would you like to find yourself in? where you really would take the opportunity to race the race if it could be achieved?

Would like to do it, but not have to do a silly qualifier.

What do you find silly about it?

Seems perfectly reasonable that a race like WS should require entrants to demonstrate both relevant experience and current fitness. With runners competing on relatively inaccessible trails throughout the night, it would be comfort to the organisers (and insurers?) to know that all athletes had at least a minimum capability.

It's not IM, on a flat sealed road with an aid station never much more than half a mile away and everyone tucked up in bed soon after midnight.

As a popular, over-subscribed race, a qualifying process would be the first stage of weeding out the inappropriately prepared idiots and ensuring a safer race.

With 147 qualifiers and the vast majority in the US, there are plenty of options.

I couldn't imagine going into a race like WS without some 50 milers or 100 km as preparation. Nor could I imagine why an RD wouldn't require it.

Fair enough - I understand your point, but from my own perspective, (besides just answering Dans's question) I think I've got the ability to do it, based on my experience.

I do know that I can't prioritize the time (and wear/tear) for both a qualifier and the real deal, and also be able to compete at my passion (140.6)

Its an interesting question. I asked myself why don't I try to sign up for races that I would want to do. I think there are three main reasons:

I don't like to sign up for races more than a month or two in advance because you just don't know what life will throw at you. I understand this isn't as much of an issue now with the insurance options, but it is something that is sort of branded on me from years of not having that option.
I don't sign up for races I can't afford
I currently don't feel I have enough time to commit to training for a full IM distance.

So I never figured I would sign up for a WTC event. But if you could could get me a spot in a race, I would go for Oceanside, Vineman 70.3 or Alcatraz. If you could get me a free entry, I might add IMAZ, IMLT or IMCdA. If you got me an entry and travel expenses covered, then there are too many to list.

But I am actually pretty happy with the selection of races that I do have available to me that meet my three criteria. And when I have time for a full IM distance, I'll do the Vineman full again.

Have you tried Endurance Sports Travel for Brazil Race Entry Slots? They sell slots + ground packages for a lot of IM Races that sell out. I *think* they sell the slots at cost - you'll have to verify. I've traveled with them on two occasions (ground package only) and they are excellent.

Especially after the events of last year, Boston Marathon. Might qualify some day years from now, but not at my current age.

Simply because I would have to go volunteer to get the spot or never get in and that's a pretty hard sell to my large-ish family, IMLP.

There's a bunch I'd love to do but can't for logistics reasons, but that doesn't fit in your criteria.

Just getting back into tris after a 2 1/2 year start-a-family-hiatus(one toddler and one infant/boy and girl) and have finally found myself having the time and energy to start training again. Just the other month I sat down with my wife and starting discussing bucket list tris and things we'd like to do. Here's how my list looked.

1) Escape from Alcatraz(entered lottery last week, we'll see how that goes) Also, would give my wife and I our first vacation together alone in 3 years, and 8 years since we've been to Napa
2) Savageman(not hard to get into, this will be my fall back for Escape) Although, not as glamourous as SF, we'd get to visit family in Pitts
3) Alp d'Huez (not hard to get into, but cost and logistics are the issue)
4) Roth (hard to get into, plus cost and logistics)
5) Norseman (hard to get into, cost and logistics, also need more time to train before attempting)
6) Wildflower(not many issues with getting in, just need time. But its on the list)

For me the longer stuff is about something different than racing - a new challenge or being on the same course with some of the best in the world.

1) Oceanside - the long history, the draw of pros, the location and being able to race with my brother would be cool
2) Swissman - talk about tough - but scenic. Seems like an amazing course. Challenge!!
3) Alpe d'Huez - historic, beautiful.

I was in Hawaii last year and several times drove from Kona to Hawi and I never once thought about bicycling there.

Several times as I passed through Death Valley I thought about running to Mt. whatever, but that was years ago. But it is not a run as much as a logistics problem. There are people with the huberis to appoint themselves the keepers of the records of finishers and judges of the rules.

The same can be said for all of the organized events.

Triathlons started with a group of guys with nothing better to do. That was great. Now, everyone brags about doing something that is much like the Youtube videos that start with the comment "watch what Bubba can do."

My wife would like me to do some of these events. I just smile and walk away. I have nothing to prove. I certainly don't need to suffer to prove it.

Answering to your (and in way to Dan) re: Norseman

For me the attraction is multi-fold:

1. It appears to be an epic, seriously challenging race. Looks like it could just be brutal. Throughout my life, in a varying endurance sports, I have always raced best in sufferfests.

2. Any kind of Kona pursuit I have is on hold. Have done two IMs - Wisconsin in 2007 (10:19) and 2009 (10:31). 07 was awesome day... everything went right in maiden voyage. 09 was tough as I overcooked the bike as I was shooting for low 10 hour. Missed Kona spot by 3 or so places each time. I now have 2 year old son. We hope for another child in next year. Have been starting up new venture in last two years as well. My time is too valuable (to me) to do the necessary training load for a KQ attempt in next 5 years. So my plan is to focus on running with a BQ in next 2 years. And shoot for Open Mary PR (sub 3) in Boston in 3-4 years. Low 1 hour swimmer and have been riding competitively, on and off, since I was 16. So will keep a feel for those.

3. There is a tangible, reachable, goal to race for: AKA the Black Shirt. Must say, savvy marketing on the Norseman's group part. With such a small field... just not that many Black shirts out there in the world. Of course, no one in my life or anyone I would come in contact with would know what it meant... but would be fun to wear one. I believe, if I train properly, I'd be in the hunt for one.

4. My link to Scandinavia. This is where Norseman would definitely trump a similar "epic" race like the one in Switzerland, etc. My wife is from Denmark. Her family has a summer house in Sweden just a couple hours away from Oslo. I've been all over Scandinavia (granted not to exact Norseman area) and love the land, the people, the culture, everything. Plus, have a built-in Scandinavian crew who would enthusiastically share the experience with me.

I'm an IM fan. I love the IM experience. I expect to toe the line at Kona sometime before I die. But I don't feel the need to only do IM races.

Realistically, I'm not planning to, hopefully, jump off the ferry in next 3-4 years...maybe 5 or 6. For whatever reason, I have given myself physical challenges to conquer before each passing decade. In my 20s, I lifted weight like crazy (what happens when your 6' 130 lbs in HS). I wanted to be able to bench 315 lbs before turning 30. Did it. I wanted to race an IM, and KQ, before turning 40. Did two and darn near made it. Norseman, while an IM distance, seems like a great challenge before 50. Just turned 43...so God willing... have some time.

Plus, I figure if I take a good, reasoned build to that... keep all the parts moving... will set me up for IM into my 50s. :)

Sorry, maybe too much detail. And... my wife likes to make fun of me by saying I'm a "plotter, not a planner". But... I love having a plan, a goal, and working to it.

I would expect Norseman only grows in popularity... so I would expect it only continue to be quite tough to get into. If there's ever a way for ST to build a link to it or other great races... hey that'd be great.

I would say, Escape from Alcatraz, Challenge Roth, Wildflower (all bucket list races). I know they hold an Xterra race on the island of Sardinia now (lived there for a few years in the Navy) and that would be awesome to go back and do and see the area again.

I guess that I might ad IM Chattanooga now, but don't know if this year's problems were a one-off situation......

I don't think it has to be ironman length - I have no problem getting into the IM I've been doing the last 2 years but I really want to do this sprint/oly that I've been trying to get into for 3 years running. this year they went to lottery and I still had no luck. So I'm stuck again wtih IMCOZ. :) (actually, I'd be happy doing both even though they are weeks apart)

What is the attraction?

What triggered your interest and want to do this race?

It looks like the ultimate test of will. To me, at least.

The swim is challenging, the bike is challenging, and the run is a long undulating run that ends with you climbing a mountain.

That's epic.

Not to mention it's fucking BEAUTIFUL all the way around.

Sort of refreshing that a race that bills itself, essentially, as the opposite of "fast and flat" has fans. Depressing how both I'm chatanooga and challenge eastern seaboard seem to know to tap into the crowd that wants the 'fast' ironman time.

Norseman.

Why Norseman?
The main reason why Norseman is because Norseman is different. Everything about the race is different than a typical Ironman. (I am not saying it is better or worse, just different).

The course is beautiful, the weather is unpredictable (just ask me about this year), the last climb is hard.

What other Ironman distance triathlon would ask the participants to walk for another 3 miles after you have crossed the finish line? This year since the elevator was taken out of lightening, we had to walk down from the peak. Nobody complained.

Do I want to race Norseman again. Yes.
If you want something different the race is fantastic.

This is a picture of the start of the last climb from the run leg, 10%

I think SL sums up the attraction pretty well.

Those attributes give the race a sense of character, a uniqueness, that most races fail to capture.

IM has become too much of a franchise, with a sense of "done one, done them all". With the notable exception of Kona, few races genuinely stand out and certainly none do so in the manner in which Norseman does.

Of course Badwater has the heat, but to me the altitude, terrain, hills (mountains), cut-off time and degree of self-sufficiency make Hardrock a tougher proposition.

So it's the NYC marathon right now for me. I'm not thrilled about trying my luck in the lottery and just not quite fast enough (especially new standards) to get in.

I would also strongly consider Leadville 100 MTB. Logistics are tougher though.

Ultraman Hawaii....but it's not general entry stopping me.....you need to do a qualifier, and that is fine too (nothing like a good reason to go to Penticton), but it is the fear of running 2 marathons in a row after 16-18 hours of racing the two previous days.

Edit: Just scanned through this thread. I'm the only idiot on here thinking about Ultraman Hawaii? There is something surreal about running from Hawi to Kona, and I'm not saying that it is surreal in a pleasant way...the times I have been riding that route and it is gets really hard, my brain flips to, "suck it up....the real hard core ultramen and women RUN from Hawi to Kona....don't complain about biking the distance".

I have an interesting "triathlon" for you that would be as hard as Celtman or Norseman, but does not "exist yet".....swim in the South China sea off Taitung in Taiwan, bike to the base of Yushan Mountain....run/hike climb Yushan mountain to 4000m/13000 feet.

DONE.

General entries open whenever Slowman flips the entries on active.com. Probably zero sign ups, but would be one of the coolest tris on the planet.

That would be easier to organize than you might think...I could see it happening a couple of days after Challenge in April...I have one course in mind for Sth America as well starting in the Bolivian Amazon and ending up at the Chacaltaya Ski "resort" (15k+ft) via the Death Road....That counts as an Off Road Tri so I don't think it would be popular here on ST.

It could be all 3... But I looked for more recent info and in one of the articles they say Rio is now in the running for the second 70.3 with another 5 cities. For the full it's between Brasilia, which should make it hot, flat and dry; Foz do Iguacu, which would probably be colder but can be hilly; and Caldas Novas, which should probably meet all of your 3 requirements... but the scenary would be very different from Rio.

Trust me, the swim is not the difficult part of Norseman. With a neoprene hood and socks, add in ear plugs and you will feel warm and cozy.

This year it was the weather that made both Celtman and Norseman extra hard. But that is also the charm.

Since I can't tolerate heat at all, I'm going for cold
With my MTB background I'm looking for steep...

That kinda limits me, but brings the "nicer", less crowded options into the foreground.

Someone made a great articale last year about a Kona tri swimming and then cycling getting up to the volcano and run there around the telesopces. That seems like a nice option as well ;)

Norseman and IMLP come to mind. Both are high on my bucket list events to do; Norseman because it's f'n hard, and IMLP because it's my "hometown" 140.6 and the one that I've pined to do for years but life/circumstances have gotten in the way of getting in.

You can register for IMLP via Ironman Foundation right now.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Right now, I'm unsure if I even have a 2015 season. Paying off the hospital bills from "Oops I Broke My Spine." Also file under: need new bike. :/

you guys see that sticky thread, about the newsletter sign up? the biggest single thing you could do to get yourself a slot in one of these races is that right there.

Norseman.

And I'm signed up for the newsletter! :)))

For those who've done more than one nxtri, does Celtman or Swissman equal Norseman in race difficulty? And can a BOP athlete survive?

I have only done Celtman twice and will do Norseman next year, so I may not be the perfect person to answer, but I have looked carefully at the courses and I have a discussed this with quite a few friends who have done both (inc Susanne Buckenlei who knows a thing or two about Norseman). Overall they would rank the Norseman bike slightly harder than Celtman, although Celtman's is longer, and Celtman's run harder. BOP survival? Probably yes, but not for a blue or black T shirt.

Thanks very much Fix! I've read your race report as well as others. You's recommend doing Celtman then? Is 6 months enough to HTFU for that?

Bucket list is to eventually do more than one of the above. Collegiate Nationals and Boulder 70.3 are on the current list but both will be taken care of in the next year.

For a non-Triathlon, The Mongolia Mountain Bike Challenge or Cape Epic.

For a Triathlon, probably the Alpe'D Huez one.

Hard to tell, it depends on your background, but I guess if you are creazy enough to ask, the answer is yes. The bad news is that the entries are closed for 2016. The good news is that you have 17 month to get ready for 2017 ;)

None of the races sell out instantly az was open when I checked a considerable amount of time after registration started so it's easy just set an alarm 5 mins before it opens then register the minute it's up... If I wanted to do that race I would easily be willing to do that that's not even a difficult thing to do

While not in any way affiliated, it is definitely inspired by and very similar in nature to the races quoted by you above.
I was a volunteer there this year and racing it next year. Should be fun...

10 years ago when I reached my peak and had just done Kona my next goal would have been an Ulta event in Kona. Multi day, mind over matter, find yourself kind of stuff... Unfortunately since then everything has gone downhill. Something longer than an IM and a personal challenge appeals to me if my body would do what it used to do
