Zipp introduces the Vuka Alumina aero cockpit

Not sure if this was already brought up, but looks nice and much cheaper! I paid almost 1000 for the HED Corsair cockpit (was debating between HED and the ZIPP equivalent which was just as expensive). Would totally have bought these instead.

Sweet. Been looking for a flat alloy base bar. Sign me up now for that and likely the under-bar clip-ons.

Just hope they make the June date!

Can you see anyway to tweak the fore and aft position of the pads? I am looking to get a cleaner front end than my T2+, but my setup dictates that my pads be a little behind my base bar.

For the above bar configuration, the clamp the armrests attach to can be adjusted 25mm (straddling the extension clamp) and 50mm (in front or behind the extension clamp) fore or aft.

I believe you, but looking at the image, I don't see how the pad is going to be anywhere but centered above the centerline of the base bar.

The armrest clamp can move independently from the bar/extension clamp assembly is what [I think] Ben is saying. You can make the armrest clamp assembly straddle the bar/extension clamp assembly, or you can move it completely in front of or behind the bar/extension clamp assembly.

(the half circle portion of the cutout on the armrest clamp that you can see in the picture is wide enough to straddle the hoop that surrounds the extension (i.e. the part just above the 4Nm marking))

If what Karl said still doesn't click with you, I will throw up a couple CAD images showing this specific adjustability when I get back in the office Monday.

Got it now. I thought it was one clamp assembly. I will probably in for one set of the when they come out.

I am thinking this will be much cleaner than my vision base bar with t2+ aero bars and should be as adjustable.

Have you seen the Service Course CSL? It is an aluminum play on the Contour Carbon bar, not as wildly shaped as the VukaSprint, but has nice aero/ovalized tops which are quite similar to the VukaAlumina, it also has nice grooves for hiding dual cables on the underside, and is designed to use handlebar tape on the tops. http://zipp.com/...vice-course-csl-bar/
we don't have a front view of the CSL on the web, but compare the CSL to the Alumina top view and you see that the two are similar. http://zipp.com/bars/vuka-alumina/
VukaSprint on the other hand contains geometry that we just can't achieve in aluminum, you can see how much more extreme the geometry is here: http://zipp.com/bars/vukasprint/
just not going to happen in aluminum any time soon..

If that is a Service Course SL bar, yes it will work. If it is a carbon SL bar, you should not install it (or any other clip). You can see the complete list of the compatible Zipp bars on the Vuka Alumina Clip page.

Josh,

Can you tell me the uncut length of the aluminum Vuka Race extensions? Looks like an alloy version of the Hed Lazy S-Bend, which is exactly what I've been waiting for (if they're long enough).

Thanks.

I wanted to point out that we have a couple of new renderings up on the website for the Vuka Alumina Clip that show the fore/aft adjustability, similar to the one above, and the maximum width with and without the Vuka Pad Wing Extension.
As always, feel free to ask questions as they come up.

Josh -

The adjustability on this setup would seem to make it an ideal OEM bar. Is Zipp looking at this in the OEM market? It would be way better than the usual Visiontech and Profile Design stuff that comes standard on most tt bikes.

people keep asking, so here's an image of the angular adjustment of the pads. since the pad clamp and the extension clamp are separate pieces, they can adjust both axially along the extension as well as rotating around the extension. the pad holder is faceted so that it can accomodate the angular adjustment. thanks for the questions and PM's on this, you are all right in that we have not done the best job explaining some of the cool fit features of the bar.

As for Ken's question, that is really more for the OEM's to answer. We make the parts that we want to ride and that solve issues that we believe to be important, or add features that are unique, and then we put it out there to see if anybody wants it. Whether OEM's want to spec the parts is up to them...though I will say that we've taken quite a few calls on it as people everywhere both customers, dealers and OEM brands all seem to be really interested in the adjustability as well as the clean look of the thing.

Not directed at you, but ... How much will the whole package cost, base bar, pads and extensions ... everything you need?

P.S. Internal cable routing for the extensions and base bar?

Don't forget a new stem if your current base bar is small (26 versus 31). That is the boat I will be in.

$80 for the basebar
$120 for the clip hardware with pads, etc
$55 for aluminum extensions
$130 for carbon extensions
$200 for VukaShift extensions with integrated shift bosses

So $255 for the full aluminum setup.

Yes, internal cable routing on all extension options and on basebar.
The clip is purchased as an above or below bar system, and there are also all sorts of high-rise spacers and such described here along with pricing:

Any idea which online retailers will be carrying these products at launch, or can they just be ordered on your site? And are we looking at early June?

Any reason I couldn't/shouldn't use my own clip on's and just get the basebar (running a standard bontrager setup on an SC 7.2)?

Yes, it would look sweet to have it all Zipp, just wondering what the cons would be with just getting the basebar by itself?

That might do it for me too, I would probably just buy the clips to get me lower with some adjustability on my current base with current extensions.

The alumina will not ship with spacers to adapt to other bar diameters. Think about how much cooler you would look with our new Vuka Alumina basebar or carbon Vuka Bull basebar...

Not really possible (as far as I know). I'm using Easton Aeroforce Mod aerobars. I actually have 2 elbow pads glued on top of each other to add that extra 5-7mm of stack height.

Josh,
Just out of curiosity, how do the aerodynamics of the base bar compare with the 3-4 year old vision tech alloy base bar?
Will you come out with any other widths besides 42cm?

We don't have any data specific to the older Vision Tech. But with all the aluminum basebars we have tested that are UCI legal, the differences are insignificant. The more important issues that are significant to basebar drag are how the basebar gets your cables out of the wind and what brake lever you choose.
