A little known movie-- Long gone. Its a baseball movie about a minor league team in Florida in the 50s. Stars William Peterson (from CSI) Virginia Madsen (oscar nominated this year) and Dermot Mulroney. Pretty good film-- made in the late 80s ---

Breaking Away
Miracle
Hoosiers
Slapshot
Quicksilver (OK not that great, but good bike messerger scene with 80s olympian Nelson Vails)

Agreed - Long Gone was quite good.

Her character's name was something like Dixie Mae Boxx, right? hahaha, that's classic. I almost felt like Bull Durham was a ripoff of this.

Breaking Away

Bull Durham

The Natural

Seabiscuit

Slapshot

Longest Yard

Field of Dreams

Caddyshack

I really hafta watch Miracle all the way thru, kept having to step away from it after just a few minutes each time it was on.

Hoosiers is also great, but, I didn't like it for a long time, since the Hoosiers beat my 'Cuse in the '87 hoops title game. Keith Smart, I hope he rots in Hell - haha!

Can you call Touching The Void a "sports movie"?

Hoosiers

Breaking Away

Here's one that hasn't been mentioned - won't make for an inspirational trainer ride, but a great movie: Hoop Dreams - documentary about two inner-city Chicago kids and their dream of making it to the NBA.

What ever happened to the IMAX about tyler?

Gotta go with Miracle. I just watched the actual game on tape a few nights ago while on the trainer. They did a great job of recreating the game as it happened. There was no need to "Hollywoodize" that game.

Caddyshack's the most popular comedy choice - but doesn't Bad News Bears have to be right up there with it?

As far as drama, Raging Bull has to be tops, and it might also be one of the flat-out greatest pieces of cinema ever.....

Most already listed...

Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Blue Crush, any Warren Miller flick, The Long Run, Happy Gilmore, Hoosiers.

I found the Long Run to be pretty motivational, I was training for my first ultra at the time...

Absolutely Vision Quest. I got the DVD for Xmas and watch the final match before hammer sessions all the time. Used to watch it the night before HS wrestling matches.

"Louden Swain: I'm gonna drop down to 168 and wrestle Schute
Kuch: SCHUTE? Schute's a monster! A genuine geratoid! His own father has to use a livewire to keep him from f*ckin' the fireplace!"

Awesome.

I also loved Sea Biscuit.

Without Limits was great.

Breaking Away was the first video I ever owned.

If you like Seabiscuit, rent "Phar Lap" but bring the kleenex.

Loved the fact that both Cutting Edge (DB Sweeney and Moira Kelley - "Toe Pick") and Blue Crush made people's lists.

My wife and I were the oldest people in the theater the day Blue Crush came out.

Varsity Blues has to make the list too.

'Endurance'

A Disney film about track star Haile Gebresellassie (sp?)

Simple and beautiful. I lived in E. Africa for 2 1/2 years, so that's part of why I like it so much.

You guys hit all my favorites already. The only one I would add to the list is Mystery, Alaska. Great hockey movie.

At the risk of getting flambe`d, I'd also subtract Vision Quest.

What, nobody liked The Hard Road? We must be living in the golden age of documentary film making. 3 I've seen (and enjoyed) lately--Hard Road, Dogtown/Z-Boys and Riding Giants. The common theme that really stood out to me is that the people featured in these films were willing to adopt an alternative lifestyle to follow their passions.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'

All the obvious great ones have already been listed. I would add Hidalgo and another wrestling movie much lesser known than Vision Quest called "Takedown". I would be pretty darn impressed if anybody else saw Takedown.

Prefontaine is apparently more accurate in some of the minor details that mega-Pre fans are into, but having seen them both (and owning Prefontaine) I have to say Without Limits is a much better movie, better acting, and more fun to watch. Even though Jared Leto looks more like Pre then Billy Crudup does.

As for my favorite sports movies:

The Sandlot

Any Given Sunday

Remember the Titans

The Road to Paris (The Nike DVD about Lance from ~2001)

A few not mentioned yet:
Tin Cup and White Men Can’t Jump (Ron Shelton was born to make great sports movies).
Personal Best (and not just for Mariel Hemmingway’s bisexual romps. This was Robert Townes first film and it has all of his usual intelligent script with great race footage and real athletes filling most roles.)

I was wondering around in Target yesterday looking for laundry detergent and noticed there is a new 2-DVD Special Edition of Chariots of Fire out, So I picked it up and forgot the detergent. They remastered the sound and restored the widescreen from th VHS version. It's mighty impressive I have to say and at the top of my list. Along with:

American Flyers

Prefontaine

Sportsnight TV Series DVDs -- close enough I say
