Corn.

Strange you should mention this. The Bikesport crew all had dinner last week at the Mexican place downtown. Frank Andreu Senior is headed to his winter habitatin in the Bahamas and we were giving him a send-off dinner.

Mario, Mike Aderhold, Pierre, Frankie, Frank Senior- the entire crew was there. Five stars. *****

They have Mexican restaurants in Detroit?

Kidding aside, I have a good story Years ago my girlfriend and I were going to visit her parents for a family reunion at Lake James, North Carolina. We, living in Southern California and loving Mexican food offered to make them a Mexican dinner they wouldn't soon forget because they had the worst Mexican offerings in their neck of the woods. So, planning for about 30 people, I went to Santa Ana, Ca. to buy five dozen hand made fresh corn tortillas at a tortillaria. I also bought a jar of Mexican veggies - you know, those really hot peppers with slices of carrots and stuff? Packed everything and flew to Atlanta to meet her sister. We were driving from there the next day. Of couse, she had to show us the local hot spot, a place known as Little Five Points Bar, where Fats Jackson played two saxaphones at once. I played more than two drinks that night and the next morning we had glorious hangovers. Dragged everything into the car and left for North Carolina. Somewhere around Spartanburg, I came out of my stupor enough to realize we left the tortillas in her refrigerator. Damn! I tried to make the best of it and bought the poor imitations of a tortilla in the local Ma & Pa grocery store in Nebo N.C.. They were thin, wimpy, truly sad discs of corn mush and they fell apart when fried a little to make enchiladas. I pulled it off, though, since they had no idea what decent Mexican food was like.

All depends on what you are eating. Then you have to decied which flavor of each type. White or yellow corn? Whole or bleached wheat? Large or small? What kind of beer will you be drinking with it? What kind of peppers, cheese and meat?

See it's not that easy for a Texan. I hold to my belief that Jesus didn't brake bread but tore tortillas instead. It is the food of the gods.

Corn, taste better and are better for you.

Only flour torillas I eat are homemade ones made right in front of me at my favorite hole-in-the-wall mexican resturant.

Jesus broke Matzo, which is a very thin, brittle, unleavened bread. It actually breaks.

Trixie and Trigger are good Kosher rabbits, as they go NUTZ over Matzo.

Corn, unless as another poster pointed out, you are in a little mexican hole in the wall where the old lady is making them right in front of you, then whatever she is making is fine.

CORN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up in El Paso (across from Juarez, Mexico). I don't remember having flour tortillas there until the mid 60's. Maybe my memory is just bad. A good fresh corn tortilla right off the press and out of the oven is the best. Most of the #*%@!, called corn tortillas, that you get in the markets is just that---#*%@!

Corn... Nothing Better then hot fresh hand made corn tortillas, just like my abuela used to make.

If not hand made, should be re-hated the proper way, right on the stove's outlet/burner via cheech and chong.

Absolutely. I woke up to mi abuela and fresh flour tortillas everyday when I was young. Reheated on the stove and buttered by a piece of torn off tortilla. Like she used to say:

Corn.

Corn tortillas and salsa instead of chips and salsa is a great healthy alternative.

Or the Ezekial whole grain tortillas for burritos, etc. http://www.food-for-life.com/index.asp

That's awesome! Some 20 years ago I started working on a plan to develop the Taos Tortilla Factory. Initially I'd open a small factory, probably near Albuquerque/Rio Rancho, but have a storefront in Taos Plaza where I'd hire Indian women to make them by hand and sell to tourists. I'd sell them at huge discount to local restaurants as long as I could place a placard on the tables stating 'We feature premium tortillas by the Taos Tortilla Factory' and then they'd sell packages of them. Through word of mouth, the business would expand, eventually taking over the world!

I planned on 'designer tortillas', too. Tourists would literally eat them up. How about raison-cinamon swirl tortillas, sun-dried tomato tortillas, patriotic tortillas - sun-dried tomato, plain and blue corn swirl.

I only gave it a half-assed effort and couldn't get my mom to invest.

Oh, and yes, lard is most important for a proper tortilla.

I live in Rio Rancho and it is really growing. They are building the new City Hall and sports arena at Northern and Unser (were they even paved 20 years ago?). Lots of money from the local government is going into business development (they want to diversify away from Intel). We just got our very own LBS a couple months ago, we will be getting a nice aquatic center (12 million worth) in the next two years, and the city wants to take over the duathlon and 5k/10k trail run that is put on. Rio Rancho is moving in the right direction

I think you could do well with any boutique store here now.

I may have to change my vote though, I forgot that my neighbor makes tortilla's ever night (mmmm lard) she's from Tesuque and makes great food ever day (best mole I've ever had).

My sister lives in Santa Fe. Have you seen the sports center there? All indoors - 50m pool, giant kiddy play pool with water slide, ice rink, running track, exercise equipment and more. It's simply HUGE!
