2010 Goals Thread *12 months on...how did you do?*
Quote | Reply
Looks like a few posters on Dev's 09 thread were getting a little ahead of themselves...post your 2010 goals HERE.

In my part of the world our '09/'10 season is in full swing...I've already ticked off one performance-related goal (twice in fact), so the only other remaining target is an AG podium at long course nats. Seeing that race is on January 9th(!), it might be a slow year... :P

***12 months on...***

Now that most of you lot are well into your off-seasons it must be time to revisit this thread.

As per my last post I've now had almost 11 months to stew over a failed 2010 goal. Note to self (& others): don't set a goal for early January!

How did everyone else do? There was some ambitious stuff posted...let's see some follow-up.

Despite only a few races set for 2010, here are some general goals:

- Run a sub 28 min 4 miler in Central Park
- Run a sub 1:40 half marathon
- Run a sub 3:25 marathon

- Join and race more local bike races
- Do a century ride (Bear Mtn?)

- Continue to stay out of the pool and train as little as possible to remain just competitive enough

OK, we'll try again as I fell slightly short on a few last year:

A: 36.xx 10K, 1:20.xx half marathon, 4:48 @ wildflower, sub 4:18 @ demi Esprit, top 30 at Gatineau Loppet (50K skate ski race)
B: Clearwater qual at Timberman or Mooseman, if I go back to CW, sub 4:22 (beat 2009 time) while averaging at least 225W again on the bike (means I did a clean race and did not get towed to T2)
C: Complete IM France with a 3:3x run

Don't think I'm doing any tri's next year.

2010 is a year that I'm going to spend working on my swimming. A little coaching and consistent practice, for a change. Historically, my swim sets up a required hammer on the bike which, obviously, affects my run. Really want to change this.

Cycling/Running for charity in 2010. Not an organized event. Just a solo effort (with some friends in a SAG car) covering 300miles. Figure it'll be a great base training.

Other than that, gonna try to hang with the thoroughbreds during the local group rides, jus' fer fun!

Thanks,
Morph

and some new ones:
Finish sub 4:45 on a full length HIM course.
No IM this year so instead finish first 100 miler.

I did not a good 2009 year (it was not bad either).
As of now, I do not know when (and if) I will be the swim again (hopefully) I will find out early Jan so my goals are currently the following:

Main goal:
be healthy and happy with my family and my job and be able to get outside for a run, a ski or a bike ride. Everything else is just the cherry on top of the cake:

1. Participate in Gatineau Loppet (either 29K or maybe 53K classic
2. Sub 38.5K
3. 1h25 1/2 Mary
4. Average 38KMH for bike leg of 1/2 (Iron either Du or Tri) but not doing Montreal 1/2 Esprit.
5. (re)Qualify for Boston and maybe trying sub 3 @ marathon

Goals I control:

Sub 4:09:27 on a legit HIM course
FTP of 4.3 w/kg
sub 1:24:58 HIM run
<50d off this year vs the 90 something of last year
10% increase in run and bike volume
15% increase in swim volume

Goals I influence:

Stay healthier this season then last, much healthier (of course I'm home sick today so....)

I want to win my wave at the Trisports.com Desert Classic Duathlon. I've done the race 3 or 4 times and have finished 2nd in my wave every time after leading at some point during the race.

If I do Soma HIM, another top 5 AG OV finish. I never finished out of the top 5. Starting now is not such a good idea.

Run my lifetime score to 2-0-1 vs Dev ;-) currently 1-0-1 (win -loss- DNS).

Top 10 OV Agers at Oside, WF and Vineman HIM.

Play a decisive factor in making sure that I or one of my teammates podiums at every bike race I do this year.

Mixed results in 2009 - Still not down to 185 lbs and didn't go sub 5:00 at Disney HIM. Snuck in a BQ two weeks ago so I consider the year a success.

2010 goals:
Sub 2:20 at St. A's
Sub 5:00 at Disney HIM (5:08 last May)
Sub 1:30 half marathon
Sub 40 min 10K
Get down to 185 for tri season and finish the year under 190.

oh geez...I don't have the time to elaborate. I will say: day to day consistency jumps out, whether it be meeting training goals, eating nutritioous well balanced meals or whatever, as the most important thing. Very few of my goals are even remotely possible unless I put in the mental as well as physical effort to achieve them. Specifically, running focus is around paying close attention to every step, no zoning out and into bad form, posture, cadence, etc. time to swim...

Worked well last year even if I forgot about it. So...

1. Age group podium at both Ironman New Zealand and Lanzarote
2. Sub-9:30 at Kona
3. Age group podium at Kona! Real long shot, but might as well aim high!
4. Earn enough to keep training near to full time.

Guess I'd better get working.

I'm counting the DNS in the Loss column...part of racing is showing up to the start line ready to rip....I dragged my ass all the way across the continent to race DD at Wildflower smackdown'07 and he bails on the race. On encounter 2, I drag my sick jetlagged ass from Tokyo to Montreal with a 2 day stopover in Ottawa to say hi to my wife and son and grab my bike and gear uphold my side of the smackdown committment (and got promptly thrashed by a much better athlete, but I did outbike split him which is what matters on ST....).

OK bring it on....I guess WF 2010 is the no excuse day

Of course it's way to early to plan that stuff, but the house is almost full, I think we need 2 more so no worries on that end. Might actually end up with a bigger rental place so maybe 4 more but again no worries for now on that.

Baliman,

Bushpilot is just being nice to me....when he beats me at half IM he does it by being in a different time zone. Not sure if that is a 9:30 time zone, but I don't think this is unrealistic for him to get to. 2 years from being overweight and on the couch, he already went sub 10 and has much more upside. Seriously, this guy is the real deal.

Thanks for making me think of this and getting it on paper/computer: (Chronological Order...for the most part

1a. Family comes first.
1. Must get better swiming, so swim, swim, swim
2. Run sub 6:00/mile 8k. (PR 6:11, 6miles)
3. Go sub 1:10 sprint distance (PR 1:13)
4. Run Boston and have a good time, not really looking for a time, but plan like 3:15 ish.
5. IM CdA; dont really have a time goal yet as this is my first ironman.
6. Go sub 2:20 at Oly distance (Never done one by myself)
7. Go sub 4:45 HIM (5:30 with a flat tire)
8. End the year with a sub 3 hour marathon. (PR 3:12)

General:

Get better on the bike so I can retire from Triathlon in 2 years and begin to earn my Roadie stripes...

3:49 off the bike at IMCOZ 2 weeks ago after 27 weeks of coached training and a total(lifetime total...) of 5.5 months of running.

9:53:54 in Coz

Swim(47:51) was mot accurent due to current but I`m at 53-55 right now on a ¨flat course¨!
Bike(5:09), easy to go sub 5 but decided to pull back at mid-course, 1st IM ever so a bit worry about the run
Run (3:49), 1st mary ever, longest distance before: 34km on training. I think 3:30 OTB is possible.

Still plenty of fuel in the tank after the race. With 10 more months of training, 10-15 pounds less and more running volume, yes, I think 9:30

Anyway, I will let you know at the end of the day, oct 09 2010...

None of you guys have seen Bushpilot ride.

His 9:30 goal after another year of run training (he's only been doing it for half a year) and losing 15 more pounds is realistic (assuming he does not get injured or sick). Bottom line is that goals have to be high enough that they are achievable but not unrealistic. Bushpilot's are not unrealistic given where his swim+bike is already. I think he can do Kona in 55+4:50+3:40+5. That brings him pretty well in at 9:30.

If there is one thing I have observed in Ironmans, big guys who can already swim and bike and then lose a ton of weight kick ass. My money is on Bushpilot going 9:25 if not 2010, then 2011.

3) improve my bike over shorter distances - learn how to push bigger gears faster
4) get faster on the run
5) get back the pool swim fitness i had towards the end of last summer (am currently going slower in the pool doing freestyle than i used to do doing breaststroke when i was a swimmer!)

After meeting my goals at Silverman I need some new ones for this year and it looks like it's going to be a run heavy year.

1. sub-3:10 at first Open Marathon attempt (Orange County)
2. Complete first Ultra, at least 50 miles (possibly Silver Rush)
3. Complete a race that would be a fun, "epic" adventure (TBD)

My underlying goal for the year is to see how my body handles the amount of running I'm going to put it through and see if I can become a good enough runner to make up for my bike.

Dev

Alright ... I'll take your word for it. It is just that sub 9:30 in Kona (as opposed to let's say Austria) is pretty close to an age-group win ... if Bushpilot is in our sorry age-group. Not impossible ... I believe his upward trajectory ... but a worthy goal that is very very very hard to achieve.

I won't be the only one ... or even the first one to state: King Murphy's reign will be over on May 16. As Tetsuoni would say ... this is a promise, not a threat.

I would like to try and get into the top 5 at Kona next year. I finished in 9:40 in 2007. If I can take 10-15 min off that, it should put me in contention to possibly be on the podium for M40-44, although my 9:40 in '07 was only good enough for 28th in M35-39. I took 20min off my IMAZ time but that's a tough comparison as the conditions were so different. I do well in the heat living and training here in AZ, I split a 5:03 bike and 3:26 run in '07, so maybe take 5-10min off the bike and at least 5min off the run should but me int he 9:20's, which is what I did at IMAZ this year. We'll see, but that's going to be my focus.

1) Under 4:30 in a half iron.
2) 100/100
3) Bike more, bike faster, bike up bigger mountains faster. This includes doing some centuries and other long rides and *maybe* some crit racing.

Currently trying to figure out how to make all 3 goals support each other instead of compromising each other.

For me, same goal as every year.....to take over the world!

Actually same goal every year, to finish an IM in the top half overall or at least top half in my AG. I'm getting close and it's getting moer and more annoying that I have never quite done it. One of these years, I might have to resort to structured training! or maybe get a coach to kick my ass into performing averagely rather than just almost averagely.

It only took him 2.5 years, but I think I can catch up in 12 months. I know it will take endless hours of sitting on my ass and hitting the refresh key (F5 is my favorite) so I can be the first to respond to any post. I am willing to do what it takes, even if I risk carpal tunnel syndrome.
Jackmott I am calling you out. I know I can sit on my ass longer than you! I know you are pulling 60-80 hour weeks on ST but in my heart I know I can do better.

I have already done about 7 posts today, there is no way I can keep this pace for 12 months. I don't even type this much at work.

I may have to start on the 100 posts in 100 days program and build into it. I am only at 0.4 postings per day, I should work my way up to a comfortable 1 post/day average, need to increase my base before any speed work

That's why Wildflower, Mooseman, Timberman and IM France are on my race plan, but in a posting from Dreamcrusher, he said that even in Nice in Hour 1 there is the paceline out of T1. If family plans and work related travel do not get in the way, perhaps American Zofingen medium distance or Tetsuoni's AZ 112 mile ITT with ~ 10K feet of climbing. I'm more of a watts per kg guy than watts/Cda (although frankly I enjoy draft free flat courses more cause I can just get in a rythm and pound the pedals....that's what I found in Kona vs LP....much nicer ride)

Anyway, when you finish UTAH do me a favour and moonwalk the final 10 meters as you qual for Kona....just for the entertainment value. I can even have somone throw you a Michael Jackson silver glove so that you can emphasize how much easier it is to qual for Kona in North America than Europe!

I realize that some of these goals are pretty sub standard by slowtwitch standards

1) Lose weight, well on my way just have to stay focused and patient and accept a pound a week steady loss.

2) Go under 2 hours for a half marathon, best time is 2:23.

3) Go under 6.5 hours for half ironman, did 7ish in my first attempt this fall

Right now I am running 6 days a week, averaging 30-35 miles since October to work towards these goals. I think focusing on running is the best use of my limited time right now, after the New Year I'll get back in the pool and add is some trainer rides.

Hey, you just tend to see many front pack guys posting, but everything is good. If all the pro triathletes posted their goals, the age group front pack goals would look pretty pedestrian....its all relative. There is always someone faster or slightly slower.

Best of luck....sounds like you are on track with the 30-35 mile per wee target. By the way, if you are on the 35 miles per week plan, that will put you in the top 30 for the 100/100 challenge!

For running:
- Set a big PR in the 5k on the track. Current PR is 14:50, 14:20ish would be nice.
- Sub 9:00 3k steeplechase. PR 9:09
- 1500 (or mile equivalent) PR. Currently 3:59
- Qualify for the new first round of NCAA Championships in outdoor (in Austin, Texas). A sub 9 3k steeple should get me there.
- Break 2:00 for 800! (pathetic compared to my other PRs)
- All-American (top 40) in cross country. This is the big one and has become my ultimate running goal. It will take under 30:20ish. I was 95th this year in 30:52.

Swimming:
- Swim once a week throughout track season. I think swimming is the only thing that can hold me back from being a great triathlete one day.
- Improve all of my PRs. Currently, from what I can remember, SCY: 34s 50, 1:18 100, 2:50 200, 6:02? 400, 25:55 1650
- Try the 200/800 (200 @ 100% and 800 @ 100% with 1 minute rest) USAT swim test for Juniors (even though I will be turning 23 in May...) and beat the "National Champs Pack 3" standards of 2:25SCY or 2:47 SCM and 9:25 or 10:20.

Biking:
- No real goals for biking. Get a few rides in this Winter/Spring.

Triathlon:
- Race another Olympic and PR (1:58:22) on a course with a more legit swim (I was 20:34 this year which is way too fast compared to what I did in training leading up to the race)

Had surgery on 12-15-09 for a grade 5 AC shoulder separation (from a May criterium wreck). Most of 2009 I was injured (knee or shoulder). Hopefully I will recover quick enough from shoulder separation surgery that this won't significantly impact my early race season in 2010. My turn.

1. BQ at Chicago in Oct (I need 3:45).
2. 1:45 or better 1/2marathon at Austin in Feb to give me a fighting chance at #1 above (current PR is 1:46:56).
3. Sub 45min 10k (current PR is 46:30).
4. Sub 22min 5k (current PR is 23:05).
5. Improve on my 2009 1/2IM results by taking at least 10min off which ever race I end up doing in 2010.
6. Sub 2:45 for Olympic distance (not my best distance so this will be hard).
7. Sub 17:00 for timed 1000m free (LCM).
8. Run a 7 min mile. I honestly have no idea if this will be easy or hard to achieve. All I know is this is faster than my current 5k pace, and I don't really know how to suffer yet - this goal is designed to teach me how to push stupid hard.

Should be interesting!

3. Qualify for Kona at Oceanside.
4. AG podium in Kona.
5. Top 10 overall at IM Louisville.

I've been mulling this over and decided to put it out there for everyone to see:
  1. Sub 1:35 1/2 marathon (Mardi Gras RNR - February - PR 1:36 in 2008)
  2. Sub 5:15 1/2 IM (NO 70.3 - April)
  3. FTP of 280 Watts (currently probably 230 - 240, though I haven't formally tested)
  4. Leave the Clydesdale group (hopefully by NO 70.3 - currently 215'ish)
  5. Sub 19' 5K (summertime - PR 19:45 in 2008)
  6. Max Bench Press of 300 (currently at 245 untrained), since my co-worker is having a hard time achieving it, I'd like to give it a shot.

I think these are all reasonable by themselves, but to accomplish them all will be an undertaking - which is good, that's why they are goals.

10k 44:40 (current PB 46:48..... age 22 from 1985 PB 45:10)
10m Sub 1:15 (current PB 1:18 within a half M)
Half M Sub 1:40 (PB 1:43:17) - Toledo April and/or Vegas Dec
Be top 50 in 5k, top 75 in 10k and top 140 in half marathon in Ontario Masters Road Racing Stats for 2010 (open masters women)

Cycling:

15k TT 26:30 34km/h (PB 27:12)
40k TT sub 1:14 32.5 km/h (current PB 1:16:26..... age 24 from 1987 PB 1:08)

Duathlon:

Finish a duathlon with both runs sub 5:00 per km PLUS bike > 30 km/h. This year I was able to accomplish 2 out of 3 several times, but never all 3 out of 3.
Have all transitions sub 60 seconds and be fastest woman transitioning in local races. I can often do both of these but not always. Want to be more consistent on this.
Finish 1st or 2nd overall woman in a local duathlon. I have been 3rd or 4th several times.

Focus:

Work on positive thoughts during races. Getting better at this but still waver on hilly courses.

Weight: Lose 9 lbs by Toledo, to get to 120 lbs. Continue with vegetarian diet.

Booze: 1 drink on the weekend only

AmZof Short Course May 16/2010:
Show up. Participate. Finish Upright. Have a beer with Dave Roche. Have enough energy left over to go back out on the course and cheer on (laugh at?) the Long Course Boyz :)

I have a slew of goals:

1. Do not get an overuse injury from running/cycling (can't help bad shoulders from college swimming days)
2. Lose 20 pounds by end of march to assist in this injury free endeavor. (easier on the legs and joints if I am lighter)

3. Run a sub :43 at an OLY this year.
4. Break 1 hour at a 40k Oly race this year.
(Ideally 3 & 4 will be done at the same race.)

5. Break 2:05 at an OLY race this year.
6. Qualify for AG Nats.

7. break 4:50 in a HIM.

Extreme Stretch Target - finish HIM in 4:3x

In my part of the world our '09/'10 season is in full swing...I've already ticked off one performance-related goal (twice in fact), so the only other remaining target is an AG podium at long course nats. Seeing that race is on January 9th(!), it might be a slow year... :P

A very disappointing fail on my part...held 2nd to about 14km, passed for 3rd (convincingly) with around 4km to go...game over. :(

Well, this is how it shook out with the goals being in bold. I gave myself some aggresive targets, which were not entirely out of the range of possibility

A: 36.xx 10K, 1:20.xx half marathon, 4:48 @ wildflower, sub 4:18 @ demi Esprit, top 30 at Gatineau Loppet (50K skate ski race)

10K 37.54...fail
21.1K 1:22....fail
Wildflower 4:56...not bad
Demi Esprit 4:29...fail
Top 41st at Gat Loppet...close as I was in a massive pack right till the final 7K....just did not have the will on that day

Close on all, but not quite there

B: Clearwater qual at Timberman or Mooseman, if I go back to CW, sub 4:22 (beat 2009 time) while averaging at least 225W again on the bike (means I did a clean race and did not get towed to T2)

Clearwater qual at Mooseman won my age group pass
Clearwater 4:31 with 220W bike, fail, but I'll take that 5 weeks after an unplanned Ironman

C: Complete IM France with a 3:3x run

3:42 run at IM France....close, but no cigar...those 2 porta pottie breaks haunt me

On a positive note, got a rolldown slot to Kona and completed the Kona+Clearwater double (10:55 + 4:31) and had some health issues from June onward that got in the way of good racing and good preparation...hopefully it all clears up, but the season was more of a success than I would have hoped given the relative failures to achieve anything posted on this thread. I gave myself some high goals and in most cases came reasonably close. At least I got to the start line of all the events that I planned to do (and some more)!

Won age group at Tundra Time Trial in Atlanta in February.

Won age group at every race at Lowes Motor Speedway I did and set a new age group track record (29.2 mph). Won the series title for Masters 55+.

Won my age group at both "321 Series" 40k time trials I did.

Won age group at state time trial championship for fifth straight year.

Fastest bike split at the oly-distance tri relay I did.

Fastest bike split at the SC Half on the winning relay team.

Second fastest bike split at Beach2Battleship at 4:34:15 on the winning relay team (out of 43 teams ... oh, and with David Roche who was the key part of the win). The one faster bike split was JPatterson here on ST (also a relay split). He was on Greg Lemond's team when Greg won his first World Championship road race. I was smoking pot and cigarettes and drinking beer about that time.

(Humbling perspective ... Jordan rolled a 4:22 bike split in his comeback race at IMAZ this year. That was HUGE!)

Earlier in my life I was an alcoholic, a workaholic and a 2 1/2 pack per day smoker. Twice I've been sidelined for an entire year with major injuries that atrophied my left leg down to skin and bones and I race with a lot of hardware in my left leg. Last year I broke a couple of ribs and punctured a lung in an early-season accident, then suffered a herniated disk that seriously withered my right leg for much of the year. This season was like a dream come true and I'm grateful to God that he blessed me with a resilient body and spirit.

Complete fail. lowest volume training year in over a decade, most days off for a year in a long long time, least number of swims, longest time out of the pool, something like 20 weeks, lowest run frequency and volume lowest bike frequency and volume.

Even with that I won 3 races which is more then the last 2 years combined made some decent bonus dollars and posted my fastest 90km ever. I guess old age and treachery still has it's merits.

I forget if I posted way back when - but I had a mixed year as an normal AG racer.

My goals:
BQ Marathon
Sub 5 hour HIM
KQ at IM St George

Positives:

Wanted to BQ in a marathon and comfortably made it at Disney in Jan
Completed Baily Hundo 100 mile MTB race... I was on schedule for a (personally) very respectable 10 hour time when a lack of Chamois cream had me standing or squirming last 30 miles
Saw my 14 year old son win a JV HS Cross country race

5:10 at Boulder HIM (sorry, 70.3) was a positive, coming off an awesome family vacation over the summer, I had 50% of the training volume from a 5:05 last year. I knew when
I booked the trip the 5 hour goal was pretty much toast. 3 weeks in Brasil was worth it :-)

Disappointments:
Bad day at St George despite what I felt was an great lead up to it. I'm not Kona material really, but hoped that I might climb the ladder by catching flatlanders
napping after training hard through the Colorado winter and mountains. A sour stomach had me puking 5 mins into the swim and I was happy just to finish.

24 hours at Moab MTB race - didn't even beat my 107 mi total from the Baily Hundo. Packed it in after 6 laps and 90 miles.

Got dropped by my 14 year old son at Bolder Boulder. He surged at mile 5 and I knew I would never beat him again.

The ups & downs in this sport teach you a great deal about yourself and life in general. Looking inside yourself deep in a race
is a hundred times more revealing than looking in the mirror when you comb your hair, and knowing you won't always get what you're
hoping to find is a lesson in humility and humanity.

Or maybe it just means I need some ceramic bearings....

Twas a great year and has me thinking I will need to work pretty hard to top it in 2011.

Breakout year in sprints
Was primed for a breakout olympic and came down with a sinus infection the week of. Signed up at the last minute for Tuscaloosa which was a month later. Had a great event going until I absolutely crumbled in the heat.
First IM/marathon completed I am not sure it could have gone any better.

Secured a coach through a great organization for 2011, but I also age group up to where the big boys play.

Dream goal for 2011 is a 5hr half at the Beast of the East and a 10:30 at IMLP.

As long as there are absolutely no follow-up questions, here are my 2010 race goals

1) <2:15 at Around the Bay 30k
2) <5:00 at Steelhead
3) <38 min 10k
4) AG podium finishes at local sprint tris

Fun to look back at my old friend, optimism.

1) Fail - dropped out at 21km due to ongoing injury
2) Fail - switched to Cedar Point half and went 5:00:20 (missed by 20 seconds...still a fail)
3) Fail - Above-noted injury had me run my only 10k at an easy pace. Just fast enough to stay ahead of my siblings.
4) Pass - 2 out of 2 in sprint tris.

One out of 4 ain't bad right??

Worked well last year even if I forgot about it. So...

1. Age group podium at both Ironman New Zealand and Lanzarote
2. Sub-9:30 at Kona
3. Age group podium at Kona! Real long shot, but might as well aim high!
4. Earn enough to keep training near to full time.

Guess I'd better get working.

Didn't work so well this time round!

1. Good race in NZ, 9:31, 30th overall, only 10th in my age group - a fast year. Poor race in Lanza, not in the shape I should have been for running.
2. Run injury stopped me running for 2 months prior to Kona, got off the bike in prime position for sub-9:30, didn't have the run in me.
3. Ha
4. Well there was one success and that's been getting a good balance of work/training

Try again next year!

10k 44:40 (current PB 46:48..... age 22 from 1985 PB 45:10) nope
10m Sub 1:15 (current PB 1:18 within a half M) wasn't able to fit a 10 miler into my schedule. Doing the Crim in 2011
Half M Sub 1:40 (PB 1:43:17) - Toledo April and/or Vegas Dec 1:42:26 Oct/10 in Grand Rapids.

Finish a duathlon with both runs sub 5:00 per km PLUS bike > 30 km/h. This year I was able to accomplish 2 out of 3 several times, but never all 3 out of 3. Still nope

Weight: Lose 9 lbs by Toledo, to get to 120 lbs. Around July I finally accepted that this wasn't going to happen on its own so I started with a sports nutritionist. I'm down by 5% body fat and am at 126 lbs now. Still an ongoing battle.

I only had one concrete goal for 2010. Run the entire marathon at IMWI. Considering I signed up for IMWI less than a week after having ORIF surgery to repair a broken metatarsel, and missed 5 months of running - this was a pretty big goal.

I ended up running 3:09 - so mission accomplished.

Sub 20 5K -- Did not attempt one in 2010.

and some new ones:
Finish sub 4:45 on a full length HIM course. -- Did not attempt one in 2010.
No IM this year so instead finish first 100 miler. -- Stress fracture after 50K in late February destroyed training plan. Made it 39 miles before I surrendered.

This should be interesting to look back on in about a year ...
Indeed, it was ...

- 1 AR workout per week w/the kids
Fail, but I did pretty well in the Dad department this past year
- Sub 1:21 HM
Didn't run an open HM
- Sub 0:56 15k
Fail, went 57:30
- 4:50:xx @ Tupper Lake (namely sub-1:30 run)
Pass, 4:44 finish, 1:29 run
- 10:29:xx @ IMLP (namely sub-3:30 run)
Pass, 10:24 finish, 3:29 run
- Top 50% OA at Green Lakes 100k
Pass, ran the 50k to 4th O/A (the 100k was a typo, and 50% was grossly conservative)
- Finish Virgil Crest 50M w/sub-5:00 at SYR 70.3 next day (more hope than goal)
Fail, led VC50 for 5 1/2 hours, but DNF at 50k - scratched SYR from the schedule in the spring
- BQ at Philly
Pass, but a trainwreck @ 3:06
- Knock out 4 more ADK high peaks
Didn't make it back up to the ADK park after July (which is depressing)

A mixed bag, but all in all some satisfying results. Even managed 2nd place at an unplanned 50M ultra in October. Not ready to set next year's goals quite yet, but the calendar will look very similar, with the addition of Boston in April.

Will you put up the 2011 Goals thread on Jan 1, or before the holidays. I need to give myself a few "easier to achieve goals" so I can feel better about my relative failure rate next December :-) :-) :-). Maybe I should use this year's actually achieved results as a starting point rather than trying to aim higher than what was done this year. That would be a good starting point since I'm supposed to be slower next year when I am 46!

Whatever I come up with for goals, one of them will NOT be "run 3000 miles for the year"

cuz that's what got me hurt in 2009.

Sure enough I didn't really set any goals. Didn't have a great year. Running went well but I didn't swim or ride much. I did bike commute to work a couple of times. One of the highlights of the training year was having Murphy's Law visit Maine and getting to train with him.

I raced twice - a 4 mile race that I won and a 5k that I came in 3rd. Both were at a dead even 7 min mi pace. The 4 mi was early summer and the 5k was on Veteran's Day.

I've had a good year for intellectual stuff. Anything else, not so much.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

Well knee surgery in March screwed up most of this... Lots of failures, but lots of fun!

For running:
- Set a big PR in the 5k on the track. Current PR is 14:50, 14:20ish would be nice. Fail. Never got on the track in 2010.
- Sub 9:00 3k steeplechase. PR 9:09 Fail. See above.
- 1500 (or mile equivalent) PR. Currently 3:59 Fail. See above.
- Qualify for the new first round of NCAA Championships in outdoor (in Austin, Texas). A sub 9 3k steeple should get me there. Fail. See above.
- Break 2:00 for 800! (pathetic compared to my other PRs) Fail. Actually attempted this one a couple weeks ago, two days after XC Nationals. Didn't go well...
- All-American (top 40) in cross country. This is the big one and has become my ultimate running goal. It will take under 30:20ish. I was 95th this year in 30:52. Fail. Finished 87th. Still happy considering the year I had. Gave it my all.

Swimming:
- Swim once a week throughout track season. I think swimming is the only thing that can hold me back from being a great triathlete one day. Killed this one.
- Improve all of my PRs. Currently, from what I can remember, SCY: 34s 50, 1:18 100, 2:50 200, 6:02? 400, 25:55 1650 Don't quite remember all my PRs, but I swam a 21:44 1650y haha! Another 4+ minute PR in 2011, please?
- Try the 200/800 (200 @ 100% and 800 @ 100% with 1 minute rest) USAT swim test for Juniors (even though I will be turning 23 in May...) and beat the "National Champs Pack 3" standards of 2:25SCY or 2:47 SCM and 9:25 or 10:20. For SCY went 2:13 and 10:10 in July. I was 2:27/11:15 at the beginning of the year.

Biking:
- No real goals for biking. Get a few rides in this Winter/Spring.

Triathlon:
- Race another Olympic and PR (1:58:22) on a course with a more legit swim (I was 20:34 this year which is way too fast compared to what I did in training leading up to the race) I did 2 Olympics and 1 Sprint this summer. Two OA 2nd's and one win. I'm hooked on tris :)

Finish Timberman in <5:20 - Check; did it in 4:56:XX
Finish Cranberry in <2:20 - Fail, I guess, as I didn't do this race
Finish run in top 1/3 of AG in every race - Check (barely); surprising since I was injured for more than 2 months...still have lots of work to do on the running, though.
Finish swim in top 20% of AG in every race - Fail; Swimming took a backseat this year and suffered as a result. Starting a masters class soon, should help get me back to 2009 form (and hopefully better)
Finish bike in top 1/3 of AG in every race - Check, by a mile; huge improvements on the bike, was almost top 5% in AG at Timberman. A big cycling block during the winter should have me in good shape leading into the 2011 season.
