ST demographics
So what is the typical STer? I know the party line (rides a cervelo, wears Asics, compression socks, torn between one piece or two depending on length of race, uses Zipps, probably a wheelcover, definitely powermeter, possibly powercranks, does flipturns, shaves legs usually...)

But what is the average age and income of the typical man and woman of this forum? Perhaps this question has been asked and answered, and I am sure Slowman or Herbert has the data, but I am just curious...

Notice the "party line" tag- following discussions, it seems that everyone follows that pattern- not exclusively, but majority. Thats what I mean, though...maybe it is a vocal minority that might skew preceptions? I do not have a cervelo, power meter, power cranks, etc, but I do run in asics, do flip turns at times, etc...

I think income might need to be a poll question...

Regardless... of your suggested party line... i do ride a cervelo (aluminum). Otherwise none apply to me. And I'm 32. Today.
Wear brooks or saucony.
No compression anyting.
not torn. Don't even wear a proper tri suit.
Stock wheels so far.
no wheelcover.
no power.
no PC.
I can barely swim, let alone do flip turns.
Never shaved my legs.

Lately it has seemed to me that the average age is moving downward.

In order of importance.

I am a husband.
I am a father of three.
I have a full time job and a part time job. My wife does not have employment outside the house.
I do OK with money, but can't justify spending too much on tris.

I wear Nike running shoes.
I wear Sam's Club socks if I wear socks at all.
I ride an aluminum Trek road bike with (gasp) 105 components.
I've never actually touched a Zipp wheel
I've never even seen a power meter in person
But, I do flip turns

And, I do OK in the 35-40 AG.

Litespeed and Kutoas for Pedalsaurus. Age is right at 40. Cervelo?!?!? Come on people be a bit more original, the only thing Canadian worth buying are Rush and Triumph cd's - <<just kidding>>. The socks are lame and the aero speed helmets scream flamer unless you are carrying a pro card and the extra second or two actually matters. Same with shaving your legs. Half of this forum needs to turn in their man cards. I guess I'm not a typical STer.

As far as net income is concerned it will be far less under the new administration than it was previously.

Just so everyone knows, my intent was not to get the community to self-report on these issues. I am only trying to get a sense of the "average" (or Median) STer who is active (or passive/trolling) on ST. There are plenty of postings about bikes, shoes, socks, wetsuits, etc. Who is ST? Maybe it would be better served in a ST poll, as has been suggested...but this would be good demographics info to have...and I am curious, though not invested in the results...

I doubt I fit the "average" for age (turning 60 in a week) or income (now retired, but was a career elem teacher, never getting above about $66K - in CDN funds).

Beyond age and income, I'm probably average in that I take multisport pursuits very seriously, and am constantly on the lookout for new advice/suggestions/techniques/equipment. That last part said, though, I am generally product-loyal, so I'm not often easily swayed to try something new.

I don't know how average I am about viewpoints. I am not all that opinionated, and am definitely not argumentative. I know a lot of STers are both highly opinionated and love a good cyber-scrap, but I'm not sure that they represent the average.

Personals -- Wife of 34 years, two "kids" (24 and 22), oldster dog, two small cars (Ford Focus wagon, Saturn something), live in a modest house in the country. Many, many degrees to the left-of-center politically/culturally/economically -- which I think further removes me from the average ST demographic profile.

Tri-related -- Cervelo, Hed, Saucony (via Newton, via Asics), DeSoto, Hammer. No flip turns, no Power cranks or meters, but a less-than-well-used Computrainer, a Compex that sees sporadic duty, and a mostly-forgotten Vasa. (Good use of rollers and Kurt Kinetic, however.) Bike and run are my strengths, swimming is not.

A VERY sought after demographic, that's for sure. Mostly professionals, type-A, disposable income. I find people here to be of VERY sharp wit and both cynical and analytical. Love em' all!

Me - sure, I have a Cervelo :)
race in a one piece of course and shaved ;)
yes, I even use compression socks (but for years, way before they were the "in thing")

almost 40, income? Not polite to ask, but Obama will cost me ;) (i.e. over 250K) - still voted for him ... :(

"type-A,"

I seriously doubt it. At least hope not since Type A behaviour is recognized as a personality disorder. I don't why everybody on ST seems to think they're a Type A just because they do triathlons as a hobby. Does this describe any of you?:

Type A individuals can be described as impatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about their status, highly competitive, hostile and aggressive, and incapable of relaxation. They are often high achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about the smallest of delays. Because of these characteristics, Type A individuals are often described as "stress junkies."

Type A behavior is expressed in three major symptoms. One of these symptoms is believed to be covert and therefore less observable, whereas the other two are more overt.
Symptoms of Type A Behavior
  1. An intrinsic insecurity or insufficient level of self-esteem, which is considered to be the root cause of the syndrome. This is believed to be covert and therefore less observable.
  2. Time urgency and impatience, which causes irritation and exasperation.
  3. Free floating hostility, which can be triggered by even minor incidents.

People on ST still make jokes about the internet superhighway.

What retard can't do a flip turn? It's like somersaulting...only it's in the water where you can't get hurt. That criterion is about as good as "drives an automobile."

People on ST still make jokes about the internet superhighway.

What retard can't do a flip turn? It's like somersaulting...only it's in the water where you can't get hurt. That criterion is about as good as "drives an automobile."
Oh, trust me. You can get hurt trying a flip turn. You can also crash on your trainer.

So what is the typical STer? I know the party line (rides a cervelo, wears Asics, compression socks, torn between one piece or two depending on length of race, uses Zipps, probably a wheelcover, definitely powermeter, possibly powercranks, does flipturns, shaves legs usually...)

I keep refreshing this thread hoping there is someone out there who fits this bill exactly...but I don't think anyone would admit to it ;)

But what is the average age and income of the typical man and woman of this forum? Perhaps this question has been asked and answered, and I am sure Slowman or Herbert has the data, but I am just curious...

Funny how quick this went from demographics to people talking about themselves :-)

How else do you get information unless people tell you about themselves?

Age question: I'm 35, wow that number came along fast
income question: zero after fed tax, state tax, wife tax, kid tax (i pay them all happily)
I think this was the end of the actual post questions, to the party line:
I ride a Kuota K Factor and love it, smooth as glass
Run in adidas supernovas, the last pair seemed different, though, less cushiony
Got a set of 808's to race with this year
Like the idea of powercranks and wouldn't mind a set
flipturn yep
I'll shave anything for fun or a race
Did get an aero helmet although it probably won't make a bit of dif
ITBS yes, PF no
Extra demographic info: Other adrenalin issues I split with tri:
motorcycle riding at the track,
burn thru a new set of race tires in a day
going into the braking zone at 160mph+

My point was that the question wasn't asking for people to talk about them selves.

Anyway...it is good to see someone else that races motorcycles.

Hello Ttram and All,

Interesting thread and could provide excellent marketing data.

Married: 55 years, "It seems like yesterday Dear." 3 sons, several grandchildren, no great grandchildren yet.

Rides a Cervélo: Of course - P3C and will probably buy a P4C soon but like the neat integrated front brake on the Specialized.

Wears Asics: Nike ID 360 and Z Coil (Soft landing shoes for torn meniscus)

Compression socks: Wore them last race and liked them.

Torn between one piece or two depending on length of race: Whatever works, probably bike bib shorts with different bike and run jerseys.

Uses Zipps: 808’s with Pro race 3’s

Probably a wheelcover: Have one but don’t use it.

Definitely Powermeter: SRM V and thinking about SRM VI (Don’t need it but this is a fun hobby and gadgets are part of the mix .... which is also true for 90% of triathlon gear.)

Possibly powercranks: Tried them many years ago but time is in short supply and they took too much time switching.

Does flipturns: Nope – except in backstroke.

Shaves legs usually: Late bloomer – just started – wife ambivalent

Aero helmet: Yes for races.

Hair: Still there but white with 'speed burns' from traveling so fast. :)

Age: 75-79 About 1/2 of my age group (US white males nationwide) will be dead in 9.4 years. (triathletes probably slightly different data)

Income: Answer should probably be Line 22 Gross Income or Line 37 Adjusted Gross Income plus any offshore income, off the books income, blackmarket income, secret government payments, criminal income and so on.

Because these numbers are often in conflict with a person’s romantic image of themselves they are often shrouded in obfuscation. Also I think we give the numbers too much weight and it may have something to do with materialism in the modern age.

In my case as I dance around the question my answer is I have enough money to do most anything I want to do and I came by it the old fashioned ways ...... I worked for most of it ..... inherited some of it .... and didn't get any of it from criminal activities (that I can talk about). That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Occupation: Retired - curmudgeon in training

Cheers,

Neal

drive imports, didn't vote for Obama
Race on Scott Plasma , train on Tarmac and Stumpjumper
Have run in almost any shoe, lately Newtons
Compression socks
Aero Helmet
1 piece Tri suit, mix it up for X-terras
Shave legs, trim arms & chest
(with all the above I do not advertise race pictures to friends or acquaintances !! )
Zipps
Wheelcover
PowerTap
Garmin 305
Trainingpeaks WKO+to chew on above data
no powercranks
do flip turns from background of swimming

That is a lot of Tri toys...but I have taken a few years to build them all up. I figure I put maybe 3-5k a year into the sport
including travel and fees. That is not chump change...but it is less than what a lot of people spend on boats, horses, golf
fishing or many other diversions. I once heard a speaker at a conference total up his boat and fishing gear divided by # of fish
and it worked out to about $900 / Bass :-)

I often wonder what 25 year old me would have done with my current gear budget. I raced my first tri 20 years ago on a $500 REI
bike with basketball shoes because I couldn't afford bike shoes. I ran a 3:10 (strait) marathon then, so the motor was pretty good.
The sweet spot was probably somewhere in my 30's, but with young kids and the internet boom, I wasn't training & racing much.

" I take my gear out of my car and put my bike together. Tourists and locals are watching from sidewalk cafes. Non-racers. The emptiness of of their lives shocks me. "

I'm a 42 year old male.

I must not be ST approved since I don't ride a Cervelo, would buy Heds instead of Zipps but have Spinergy Stealths (although I do have a cover), have only run in Asics once in the past 20 years, always wear a 2-piece racing outfit, do flip turns and train old school without a power metre/cranks or HRM.

Compression socks? You've got to be kidding. If I was close to a podium at Kona and thought they might get me there I might consider them ..... otherwise the hassle of putting them on during the race and the fact that they look absolutely stupid will keep me "sockless" for the majority of my races.

I ride a Kestrel Talon and make $560000/year teaching high school mathematics (ok .... slight inflation of my income but some of the kids at school believe me when I tell them that is how much I make).

21 yo
female
Cannondale
Asics
I do have and am wearing a pair of compression socks... LOL
one piece - but a swimsuit thankyouverymuch
what are Zipps?
no wheelcover
no powermeter
no powercranks
Flip turns with dolphin kicks
And yes I shave my legs but I'm a chick

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

On average - a bunch of upper-middle class, middle-aged white guys.
And Dev. ;-)

Ride a Cervelo - nope
ASICS - nope, they don't fit my feet
Compression socks - ok, I've been doing this a bit this season
2 piece always.
ZIPPs - no, I have a HED Jet90
Wheelcover - check, because...
Powermeter - check.
PC's? - you must be joking.
What's a flipturn?
Negatory on the shaving legs.

So, as we've all known for a while, I am not the stereotypical ST'er (other than in posting volume - for 6 months a year).

I don't why everybody on ST seems to think they're a Type A just because they do triathlons as a hobby.

I agree, that is odd. I have met a few "real" Type A personalities and both were CEO's, extremely hard driven and very hard to work for, really not very enjoyable to be around. I have always worked hard, been at a pretty high level in a few large companies, and done a few IM's, but am not even close to a Type A.

For some strange reason, I have met a lot of people who say they are Type A (they weren't) and most of them were triathletes so I figure,

a) they don't really know what a Type A personality is
b) they think they are one because they work hard or
c) they wish they were one because they think it is good.
