Why did you schedule this new event on the same day as the Westchester Triathlon? Glad to see a new local event, but sorry to see it conflicts with one of the other major races in the county.

I agree and this discussion has gone on in other forums. Bad judgment IMO to schedule both on the same day. I find it hard to believe it was the "only date" and hope they do not conflict in the future. Detrimental to BOTH races & the local athletes IMO.

Dev is right. Westchester sells out every year, and is sold out for 2008, so I don't see a conflict. In fact, I plan on racing the new event. We need more grass roots racing.

Cool too see new races pop up! Sometimes the scheduling just doesn't workout.

I wonder how long it will take before the WTC comes knocking at the door because of the blatant use of the word "IRONMAN" in their race logo and tag line "Westchester County's Only Half Ironman Event!"

So those who are doing the Oly on the same day would not be interested in doing a local 1/2 if it was held on a different day?

guys...QUIT WHINING...you should be thankful there is another event....more events equals more options for consumers...the Westchester tri in Rye is sold out...there will be no loss of revenue for either event.

If you are registered for Westchester Olympic and want to do a half, there are countless other half Ironman on other weekends to pick from....hop in your car and drive the 5.5 hours to Montreal the weekend before and do the Demi Esprit...you'll see a different place, and it actually won't cost a heck of a lot more than doing a local event, just cause the race entry is soooo cheap in Canada.

This Toughman event looks fun....I might drive down the 7.5 hours to do it if I can lure my family down with me.

Why are you making a big deal about this? Happens all the time that 2 triathlons are scheduled to take place on the same day. BTW, to the race director of the new half ironman - Great name "TOUGHMAN". I like it. Thanks for bringing a half IM to Westchester. Should be a great race!

Dev, that'd be awesome if you came down. The wagering on the Murphy's Law vs. Dev smack down would dwarf the prize purse.

If we can convince our families into it then it might be a back to back set of weekend smackdowns....ML brings his family up to MTL the weekend before for Demi Esprit and then I bring my family down to Westchester for Toughman...something tells me that convincing the respective families to do lame road trips for tris might be harder than convincing ML and I to beat the crap out of each other...

Well it's not a conflict, except that a lot of potential customers (area triathletes) may already have signed up for the Westchester race. As long as you don't want your race to be to big it should not be a problem.

Based on what Westchester charges for an Olympic, I would guess about $320 would be the entry fee for a half in Westchester;)

ML and I were talking about Esprit driving to Tupper. As you wrote, the families' blessing is needed, but I know he's interested in racing in Montreal. Leave it to your sick mind to come up with a back to back, double half iron smackdown.

Man that is perfect, a local half will have to see how the schedule goes as it is pretty tight (Mighty Hamptons & MH Urbanathlon), but if not I can help out. As mentioned there will be no conflict with Westchester as it sold out in a day or so. If you are using some of the North County Trail it should be ideal, especially the long downhills leading up to the resevoir. Best of luck as you should get a great field and race together.

I wouldn't cycle on the North County Trail on the weekend unless it can be a closed course. I rode NCT often when I lived in Scarsdale, but I only ever rode once on the weekend. That was enough. It gets very dangerous with bladers, joggers, kids on trikes, dogs off the leash, etc....

No....scheduling the 1/2 on the exact same day does result in a potential loss of revenue for both events. You're forcing local triathletes to choose between two events when in many cases they'd like to do both. I'm just saying that it'd be NICE for the locals if they were not on the same day. The 1/2 RD (Rich Izzo) has said it most likely will not be the case in the future. That's good! I had no plans to do a 1/2 this year and even though I've done the oly several years in a row, I've been considering droping it from my schedule for a variety of reasons. Having said that, you might be shocked to hear that some of us don't have the luxury of drving 5.5 hours (or whatever) to another event. And I am NOT whining, dagnabit! f I whine, you'll know it! ;-)

I would like to thank all of you for the buzz about the new race, (especially RF). Our committee has worked long and hard to get this project off of the ground and will be happy to see the event occur this year. The bike course will be challenging, beautiful and along roads (not the trailway) that most of us ride each and every week. If you ride in Westchester you will know them well. The bike and run courses will be posted this week, with information concerning bag pickup coming soon.
There are many other large announcments to follow.

I have competed for the last 20 yrs in triathlon and have experienced organizing, and overseeing a very large local triathlon. To that end, I hope to see all of you enjoy our event this year or next.
To see the interest in triathlon so great is truly inspiring and I hope to see more of these events occur.

Looking back that is the reason why I haven't ridden there in a while but hypothetically wouldn't the Toughman mean having a rollerblader lodged in your spokes, kid on your helmet and pulling a dog by it leash? Yeah ... I didn't think it through... where's my beer, nontheless now safer but still cool.

There is very little flat riding around that area (my old stomping grounds), and anyway, nobody would wanna ride on the fricken bike path when there are dozens and dozens of miles of awesome scenic roads to ride on.

It may not be as hard as Nutmeg or Savageman, but it ain't gonna be a pancake flat drafters paradise like Eagleman or Devilman, that's for sure!!

Yes - only Dev would even seriously entertain the idear of doing back to back weekend HIM smackdowns.
And only I would even seriously consider maybe taking him up on it. ;-)

DON'T GET ELIMINATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS - I agree with those who say it's not competing w/ Westchester. It's not.
That race sold out 7 months ago or whatever. Anybody who wasn't racing that weekend, now has another option to consider.
One that offers CA$H MONEY for the podium - CHA-CHING!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to be clear the cost of the race is $225 for individuals and 300 for relays. The bike course only has one flat sxn that people routinely TT (hint hint), and you will ride around a beautiful resovoir (hint hint).
No trailway.

The run will go over a dam (hint hint).

This is a magnificant course. I have ridden it and run it. And we will have some of the top amateurs and some local pros competing for a cash purse of $3500.

Plus a major partnership is in the works to be announced in the next few weeks.

If you want me to shell out $225, you better do more than (hint hint) about the course. If you know it, post it. If you haven't secured the permits yet, put a big disclaimer saying "This is the course we hope to get, but is subject to change".

Coy and secretive are not good traits for a race.

First, thanks for adding another race. I agree with One Lap that course info is highly influential to deciding if a first-year race is worth doing. The Musselman half has a good example (elevation profile with an interactive map that shows exactly where the hills are)--this is probably an easy thing to do using Google/Mapquest/MapMyRide(?).

Other suggestions:
  • Allow packet pick-up on the morning of the race. I realize this adds chaos the morning of the race but I am more likely to sign up for an unknown race if I don't have to book a hotel.
  • Add a description of the race T-shirt. Will it be cotton or a technical fabric? Can you show the design (some shirts quickly become cleaning rags as I would never wear it in public)?
  • Be specific of aid station locations and what is offered. I would be willing to pay higher entry fees if ice, sponges and endurolytes were offered on the run (even late September can be hot & humid).

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I will be in NYC next weekend and looking for a 50-60 mile ride. Is this a biker-friendly route on non-race days? Any areas to be cautious of? Will I need a more detailed cue sheet or is it as straight forward as the course description on the race website?
Thanks,

I commend R Izzo (who I know from high school) for posting this. I felt it was odd to be on the same day, knew he would get torched and Rich clearly states only available and next year will not conflict. It kills me that NYC Tri and Placid are on the same day, and numerous people feel this is a conflict for such radically different distances. If you think about one race with two different distances or a tri/du at the same location, no conflict. So I guess it could be considered a Westchester Tri weekend? It also is a compliment to Rich that he is well respected and the attacking was kept to a minimum and the local athletes tetsuoni and Murphy'sLaw support Rich. Rich good luck and let me state this now, Polar does not really sponsor local events :(

So, I just got back from biking and running the course, and I must say it's pretty spectacular up there. The traffic is not so bad, the scenery extremely nice and the bike course is not as hilly as I thought. Kept me wondering why I'm staying mostly on the west side of the hudson if westchester is this close and provides such good routes.
The run got even better, with some trail(ish) sections, again - nothing too hilly and a constant change of scenery to stay motivated. One climb out of town and another one around the 5 mile mark, that's it.
The race should be fun, glad I signed up.

Yeah, those roads are beautiful, eh? I miss riding down thattaway (I used to live in N. Tarrytown, now known as Sleepy Hollow, and then in Ossining); not that the riding up my way is chump change or anything, but it's nice not to hafta be hammering up steep hills all the time.
Riding around the various reserviors in Westchester is always a great outing. Titicus is one of my faves for sure.

Good luck at the race, I think if yer on form, you could place in the $.

Stef,
I was happy to see that you signed up for our little race. I am glad that you liked the bike course. It took alot of prep work to make sure it flowed well (mostly rt turns) and was not undoable. I actually took out a sxn of climbing (over 500ft) in order to make sure that people would want to come back next year.
We really wanted to include the aquaduct (which is does for 2m) and the run over the dam is a great way to come back to the finishline.

I guess once you have biked 300m to LP from NYC everything else is flat! You and I both did it last year from here!
See you on raceday!

True, just the view from the bridge onto the dam is worth it. One of these moments where you'd have to tell yourself not to stop running and look at it.

Hopefully you will get enough volunteers and the town of Croton will come out in good numbers.

Richard ... while I very much appreciate the addition of a HIM to the area ... the problem that many of us have is the mandatory Saturday check-in. There are a large number of athletes living within a 100 mile radius who could easily drive to the venue on Sun morning but either don't have the time (driving back and forth) or the money (cost for hotel) to pick up the package on Sat. Is there anything you could arrange for us ... like a very early Sun check-in? Thanks for considering.

thanks Rich

"Mandatory Packet Pick Up is held in Saturday to aleviate the work and stress of people picking up on race day. We really don't have an official pick up on race day, as you can imagine how busy that morning is and all our volunteers have to be out on the course.

That said, for those special situations where people can't come Saturday, I will be at the registration tent Sunday morning from 6:00-6:30am ONLY. Expect a long line though, as many people seem to want to do this and we just don't have the resources to pull volunteers off the course to help with late check-ins.

Be sure to bring your photo ID and USAT card if you have one.

Hope this helps. Natalie"

One of the guys on our Team rode the course last Saturday (Scott - I think you crossed paths w/ him?) & said it was a really nice course. I'll be heading up there w/ him this weekend, look fwd to seeing you.

Also, if anyone is going up to spectate, I'm planning on doing the run course after they leave on the bike (if anyone is interested in joining me, shoot me an e-mail Brian@PersonalBestNutrition.com so we can connect).

See you up there.

As someone who initially did not understand why this race was scheduled the same day as the Westchester Oly, I wanted to wish you the best of luck on a good race and I look forward to hearing what the date will be next year. I hope the race does well and I look forward to hearing from any who participate.

Brian,
My good friend Rob K always speaks highly of you. You swam at Stamford Y for a while with alot of our crew (they will all be at the race site either racing or volunteering).
I think you will enjoy the run being on the aquaduct and going over the dam.
I look forward to meeting you in person.
Rich

Fat Dog, thank you for all your well wishes. We will pick the best race date next year for our race and hopefully it will not be in conflict with any other races. I will announce it in 2 weeks.

Dev and all- here is what my registration capt has sent me.
I might add as today is the LAST DAY to register on active, and the nyou have to come to the racesite sat to do bag pickup- you MUST SIGNUP TODAY ONLINE for me to set up a sunday race bag pickup.

Natalie"

I signed up last night on the basis of this post. You might have sold out already if there had been a packet pick-up somewhere here in NYC: a tri store, a bike store, Asphalt Green, a street corner...

I'm looking forward to the race!

Sorry, for packet pick-up, I meant 26th Street and 6th Avenue, ...where I live.

I have no opinion on dates for next year's race, yet.

What about Sep 26th. You'll have cooler weather then in NYC and you won't have to risk carnage on the run course and shipping people off to the med tent :-). All you yankees should come up to Canuckistan for the numerous half Ironmans here in early/mid Sep (Canadian, Muskoka, Demi Esprit). When is Westchester Tri 2009? sounds like you want to steer clear next year?

Well, yes indeed. I have to return the favour and race on your home turf and THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL that I am freezing my tail off at Harriman!!!

Oh no! I was about to suggest Harriman for a nice NY area foray. :-X

Back to Westchester, it is sounding great. I agree that for local athletes , and also for the very many of us triathletes with families, flexibility with packet pick up could be very helpful. A lot of NYC athletes would have to rent a car. Richard, you might even find that it is worth the extra volunteer time you'd have to add. I often choose Harriman for that very reason. I am a mom and there is no way I can "afford" two days of road trips for one race. I can face the hills/cold in Harriman, but I can't change the laws of physics and create more hours in a day.

On the other hand, there are some who really like to get all their ducks in order including chip, number, everything, in advance and they are probably happy to visit the race site twice.

Best of luck with Westchester, I am sure it will be a great event.

Richard,

Thanks, I'll touch base w/ Rob before the weekend.

Also, a few questions:

1. Will there be a cyclist (i.e. mtn biker) for the lead runner(s)?
2. On the run course, is the out/back section at the beginning on the same road....

3. Is there an entry list available anywhere?

Thanks again, see you Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

Brian, there will be a lead car, sag car, and bike mechanic for the bike course as well as 8 harleys patrolling for drafting, injury, and general violations.
Members of the Westchester cycle club will be on the course as well on bikes.
On the run there will be: a mtn bike for the lead male, a mtn bike for the lead female, and a mtn bike for the last runner.

The run begins with an out/back sxn on the greenway- a bike path along the hudson, then goes out up main st (this is a lollipop stick) and then a counter clockwise loop then back the same way you came out only no out/back loop when you get back to the park.

Awesome race Rich. Congrats on an almost flawlessly executed 1st time race. (though I'm sure there will be others along in a bit to contradict me). Volunteers were excellent, there was enough cop cover for all the junctions, interesting and beautiful course, (and definitely challenging).

hope it becomes a huge fall classic within a very few years!

ps I think I circled the Hudson a few times in the swim. A LITTLE foggy. Damn it RD- can't you control the weather???

To all who raced, I want to thank you for participating in the Inaugural Toughman Half. I can truly say I am stoked with all your feedback and race notes. I am happy that you love the course, because it did take alot of time to make it not only scenic, and challenging, but safe and forgiving.
Our team was incredible in their execution today, especially when fog threatened the swim leg. Our RD, Marc G, an experienced life guard went so far as to man a kayak to assist in swimmers being guided back to shore. As fate would have it, 10min after the last swimmer was out ofthe water, blue skies and cool weather blessed us the reat of the day.
We focussed on having a safe, low impact race, that would be a great experience for the racer. I even made 4 trips to the local shoprite to get more water to make sure that each of you was well supported later in the race. I now am the proud owner of 50 cases of water.
I know we can do somethings better and would love to hear your thoughts if you raced privately so that we can next year.
Well it is now time to sleep after 40+hrs up w/o sleep.

Thanks for the good stuff yesterday. It was fun out there and the volunteers are great. Anyone thinking of doing this race next year SHOULD! Also, I was not aware but there is on site CAMPING! Tents, RV's and Cabins, this could turn out to be another Wildflower or Timberman festival. THANKS AGAIN!!

agree. very solid organization especially considering it a first year event on limited planning time. I kind of liked the foggy swim, although there was a point when I felt pretty lonely out there... I couldn't see anything. the bike ride is fantastic country roads, and the run a rolling blast. congrats to dom gillen who was leading wire to wire and to scott who seems to run like a kenian.

I feel very good for this race, it has some good potential over the next years. even swimming in the hudson river and cooling down in it after the race was inviting.

oh and thanks to true-motion for a great and unplanned t-shirt. t2k, I'm still wearing it :)

I want to thank all of you who came out and raced Toughman yesterday. I am happy that you enjoyed racing it as much as I and my team putting it on.

First off, my team deserves all the credit. From the top down they worked hard to make your race experience a great one.
Marc Grabisch (Flow Fitness inc), our race director, Natalie Siano, our registration capt, Kathy Salvo, our swim capt, Justin Bohan, our bike capt, James Kelly, our run capt, Ed Beusse our aid station capt, and Paul Reale our volunteer capt. Jim Coboy and Bill Goldsmith provided boats to support the swim as well as Murat Turk who headed the kayak crew. Our volunteer crew amounted to 180 dedicated people who were on the course for you for 8hrs. This included HS track teams from Croton, Montrose, and the boyscouts. And I hope you enjoyed the cheerleaders on the big hill at the 10k mark!
They were the backbone on raceday for you.
Our race timer Brian Ditty, Photographer Ken Shelton, and Videographer John Arbucci (yes there will be a DVD), DJ Paul Vito, Bike mechanic Rob Whalen, Website manager and Logo deisgner Charles Whalen and announcer William Deknatel were outstanding.
And of course we could not forget our chef, Vincent Nargi or Med team headed by Dr.Marc Bochner DC CCSP with Shari Gordon heading up massage.

Congrats to Dom Gillen, Scott Defillipis, Stefan Kusurelis, Christine Dunnery, Allie Lawler and Diedre Douglas our 1st,2nd and 3rd overall Male and female finishers respectively.

Thank you for all your feedback about the race especially the things we can do better. Next yr we will work hard to implement alot of your suggestions so as to make the race even better than this yr.

Results are posted on the website and we will have pictures as well in a few days from our personal photographer Stacey Smith.

I will announce next years race date within 2 weeks as well.
I also want to thank all of you on this site for the buzz, and constructive criticism.

At first it was an idea, then a dream. I want to thank all of you who participated for making it a reality.

See you next year!
