Best Rivalry in Sports.......

Paul and I were chatting last night on our ride home and I saw this therad on another forum and with the lance/jan tete-a-tete starting..... Mine: 1-Yankees -vs- Red Sox (just look at last nights game....) although the best quote I ever heard about this was that it was like saying a bug and windsheild were a rivalry..... 2-Van Gundy's Knicks -vs- Riley's Heat........When the coach runs out and grabs 'Zo's leg that says it all....... ..yes, i'm a NY'er....... Just thought we needed a NON-TOUR related thread.......

There are thousands of best rivalries that most people never hear about. The local high school vs the next school down the road. There is a dynamic in defending the honor of your home town against the barbarian horde from the next town that can never be duplicated in pro sports where for enough cash your star will probably join the barbarian horde.

I think the oldest rivalry in the NFL is the Bears vs Packers... Still a very heated rivalry! I am from IL and went to school in Green Bay, every Sunday in fall was a battle whether or not the the Bears and Packers where playing each other. And it just happened that the son of the Packers GM went there and two grandsons of the Bears owners went there. All very nice people, but never get into a football conversation with them when their teams lose!

Yankees- Red Sox isn't a great rivalry because the Red Sox are also rans compared with the Yankees. You need to have two teams that are comparable to be a great rivalry. That's why Michigan-OSU counts, but Michigan - Michigan State does not.

No, we had purchased a really nice basketball program; the NCAA just found out about it so we had to sell everything off and start over. It might be a rivalry again soon.

great rivalries are all around us. They ALL wax and wane. There are times when one or both of the teams will go through the inevitable down cycle. However, when they are both up, it's great. BoSox and Yanks IS a great rivalry. You have to look at these rivalries when both teams are up, so I'll vote for Detroit Red Wings v. Colorado Avalanche from 1996 till 2002. It's softened lately even though both teams are still great, but games like "bloodbath I and bloodbath II" were epic.

Rivalries also are unique to the players and fans involved. I recognize the Bosox and Yanks are heated rivals, but I could really care less who wins. therefore, I'd never vote for it as "The" rivalry.

How about Australia and New Zealand in Rugby Union? Huge rivalry with Nationalistic feelings.

Texas vs OU isn't a rivalry. It could be but OU beats the piss out of Texas every year so it isn't much of a game, neverless a rivalry.

UM v. OSU is awsome, however...

My personal favorite rivalry is Michgan v. Michigan State in Hockey. No love lost between either the fans or the players.

Any rivavalry that features a game that fills a FOOTBALL stadium to capacity (Cold War) is tops in my book.

Call me partisan. =)

That is funny! Unfortunately for you guys (if you are a Wolverines fan) those teams (fab 5 etc) won absolutely NOTHING. Not even a Big Ten championship. Oh, I think there was a NIT championship but that doesn't count for much. I do think Amaker is a great guy and coach,,, awesome pick up for the Wolvies.

Chris Webber continues his choking ways in the NBA.

Props to all of you guys for all around sports knowledge. Too often when I talk to cyclists or triathletes about sports, they only know about the small world which is their sport. I have actually heard a respected multisport journalist say that the biggest rivalry in "all of sports" was Mark Allen-Dave Scott? India v. Pakistan in cricket.

Lance v. the French.

Personally, I am hoping that U.S.A. v. the planet in Athens goes to the U.S.A. if for no other reason than to irritate those who cautioned US athletes from exuberent demonstrations of victory. Can anyone tell me when winning became politically incorrect?

One interesting sidelight is that the appellation "Fab Five" got applied to the wrong group of players. Only four of the five starters in the better known group went on to play in the NBA (Webber, Rose, Howard, and a cup of coffee for Jimmie King) - but five years earlier, all five starters on the 1989 NCAA Championships got to the bigs. They were Terry Mills, Loy Vaught, Glen Rice, Rummeal Robinson, and Sean Higgins. Extra credit if you can name the one player whose father also played in the NBA.

High school football -- Valdosta (Georgia) v. Lowndes County.

Valdosta is the county seat of Lowndes County, and both are high-powered football programs. One or the other (or both) is always a threat for the state title. Valdosta is reportedly the winningest high school football program in the nation, and is known far and wide as a real powerhouse. But Lowndes is building its own tradition, and this intra-city rivalry is as good as it gets. Both are also in the same regional division, so the stakes are raised all the more.

These other rivalries are excellent, but this one is indescribable. No money, no trophies, no MVP awards -- just pure hometown pride. It is, in a word, ferocious.

Believe it or not, there are some great rivalries outside of the U.S.

Canada vs Russia in hockey

India vs. Pakistan in Rugby

Brazil vs. Argentian in soccer

Australia vs. S. Africa in cricket

The most overrated rivalry is Red Sox vs. Yankees. Have the Red Sox actually ever beat them? HUH????? India v Pakistan Rugby???, cricket definitely but Rugby??? Australia V New Zealand or Anyone V England are the two biggest rugby rivalries. The biggest rivalry in the world bar none is Glasgow Celtic Vs. Glasgow Rangers in soccer....unless you have been to one of these games you'll never understand.

How could you spoil our season if its already over be you play us? Just wait til Mr. Favre retires! Im sure well have 10 different quarterbacks before then. How can you not like Favre, he is a great competitor.

I'll presume by rivalry you mean a consistent, historical match/game against an opponent, not a transient series. That said, a few come to mind:

Rangers-Celtic (Scottish soccer) this is more than soccer...it's Catholics vs. Protestants

Army-Navy (college football) when the President goes to a game and has to switch sides at halftime to maintain the peace, you know it's big

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. Pomona Pitzer (otherwise known as the Weakass Hens)...you'd have to go there to understand this one. Since Pomona sucks, though, it's not much of a rivalry, but I've got to include it.

Cheers, tbo

Sorry Casey, India / Pakistan in Rugby....... I think you mean cricket?? Australia biggest rivalry in cricket would more likely be England, especially when "The Ashes" are up for grabs. New Zealand will always have a "friendly rivalry" with Ozzy in all sports, but in Rugby Union it's biggest foe is South Africa!! - however, of late, beating the World Champion English in the last two tests was most satisfying!! - scoring 8 tries and not having their line crossed once.
