If it looked like a P3 I wouldn't post about it, that's just not done. Unless of course you do what Willier did and you piss off the people who's bike you rebadge, then all bets are off. Did anybody else see Scott's media offensive after Willier tried to spin a Scott frame as a "highly secretive" Willier prototype? Pretty funny.

I've sent the photo to somebody who will hopefully post it. It looks hot, maybe there are some things here and there to criticize, but it just looks cool (hm, now I've called it hot and cool in the same sentence). That's what I've always liked about BMC, at least they try to be different from the pack.

My first response is: This is reminiscent of the late 80's-mid 90's when you just never knew what some of the big names would show up with. I remember nearly falling out of my seat when I saw bikes like Boardman's Lotus and MI's Pinarello. There were many others, as well. Some worked well. Some...well...not so well.

This thing is definitely a "hot rod." Will it work? We're certainly going to find out! I like the dynamics they've got going on between the front wheel and the down tube...the wheel is fairing the down tube. The attention to detail like trying to pair up the shifter cables is cool, though I'm not sure if the effort really inproved things much since you've still got two cables in the wind. It certainly shows a lot of effort, though. And that fork looks like they are pushing the UCI limits down to a gnat's ass as well. Can you say purpose-built?

Yes, that's one of the strange things about it. Illegal or superfat and not very aero, those are really the only two options with a blade that wide.

Doesn't the UCI rule have to do with aspect ratio? If so, a deep fork can be legal if the blades are fat.

Is it just a function of the picture. I looks that the black from the other side of the fork balde is seen in the picture. Why would they build a fork that is illegal?

I think they may be playing with the UCI definition of a fork to squeeze in different criteria: where does the fork end/frame begin? Much like folks are doing with the toptube/headtube/downtube junction (joining them earlier than strictly necessary) to fair in the headtube and goose the max dimensions on the frame members. By mounting the fork in front of, rather than below the headtube, they may be trying to apply the headtube max dimension to the fork crown (it's not part of the fork, it's part of the headtube...)

I don't recognize the bars either, but he's still using the Vison break levers.

Aerodynamically, I still doubt it trumps the Trek TT or a Cervelo.

Boy is that green, white, and yellow gawdy. This bike will be a joke in a few years.

It's an optical illusion as the saddle is in fact shortened, not long. It is a Selle Italia SLR saddle with the tip cut off.

The bars actually look like re-badged Vision's.

How come nobody has wondered how the hell does this steer. The "stem" seems to be part of the head tube. It doesn't even look like there is a headset there.

Definitely won't be seeing it in a bike shop, it lacks quite a bit of adjustability.
Quote Reply
Re: Tyler's new TT bike [KingK] [ In reply to ]
That's exactly what the old Look did also. Instead of using a regular headset they would attach the fork to the headtube and then twist the head tube to steer. If I remember right though, it is quite heavy to pull off.

I don't think those are Vision bars. They look a lot more like the Deda's US Postal was using last year.

The lack of adjustabililty is an interesting thought. Once a bike is dialed, one can set it and forget it. I've been on the same dimensions for the last 10+ years on both road and my tri bike. How cool would it be to have the bike built for the individual. (ala CAT Cheeta) It will be interesting to see the team TT. Will Tyler's guys have one of their own, and in their size, or will the be on stock bikes while he gets all the bling bling. Only a few days to wait and see!

Doesn't look like a very long drop from top of saddle to pads. Maybe that's not the actual position where Tyler's saddle will be (height wise). Just kind of figured he'd want it much more aggressively aero than that, i.e., a much longer drop.

The position is a little more aggressive than it looks. In the photo the front wheel is rotated upwards (draw a line to connect the front and rear skewers to see). If you were to adjust the photo the bars would drop into a more aggressive looking position.

A few details you might have missed...

#1 - Notice how close the front wheel is to the downtube. That's REALLY close. Compare to your bike.

#2 - Notice how far down on the downtube the water bottle bosses are. I'll bet there's a special aero bottle and holder that's going there.

#3 - Looks like both gear housings go into the downtube on the right side, instead of left and right like most bikes.

Yeah, just like when Bianchi was trying to take credit for the Walser Jan was riding; I am surprised that Willier didn't try to say that the Walser the Gerolsteiner guys rode was a Willier Triestina (which I think translated into English means: "can't build our own bike").

I think Tyler's bike is cool, but all of these details are things I have seen before. It is a hopelessly non-production-friendly bike, and it looks remarkably like a Look in the front end. Nice execution, however.

Does this mean Tyler has to stop shaving his legs, wear cork-soled cycling shoes, and run around with beads and flowers in his hair? Wouldn't that render all these aero advantages on the bike meaningless? ;->

The front fork dropouts don't face the rear, but the rear dropouts do face the rear, like a Cervelo P2k and P3. I've never had a problem with my rear facing dropouts on my Cervelo, doesn't make me nervous at all.

That's a really bad press release, maybe I'm wrong, but who refers to the rear triangle as the "rear fork"?

And all the "innovative" stuff they claim has all been done before. Rear facing dropouts - Cervelo. That head stem, head tube thing - Look, I guess. Extended seat post - hmmm, Cervelo P2, Griffen I think, plenty of track bikes, etc.

I would have been more impressed if they'd said "we looked at all the innovative stuff used on other bikes and decided to raise the bar and put them all together and add a couple of new tricks of our own".

All that being said, I like the bike and can't imagine not going fast on it :-)

From the Phonak (not Cervelo!) Press release:

"The seat post is no longer really a post but a component of the frame, and is cut to fit. Its special design also allows us to make individual adjustments to the length"

Wow, what a radical concept. A way to adjust seat height! Let's give a raise to the guy that thought up that!

Actually, it is a very cool looking bike. With the penultimate stage being 55 km long, aero performance could become even more important than usual if the race is close. Of course, only the wind tunnel knows if it is as fast as it looks.
