November 200 mi Running Challenge
November has 4 weeks, so that's ~50 mi/week. Here are the rules:

1) Anybody who goes over 200 mi from Nov 1 to Nov 30 gets a postcard from me. Woohoo, I know, but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye.

2) The mileage winner gets a slightly used BottomFeeder speedo and Feynman's book "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman". This is one of my all-time favorite books because it is both funny and serious, and Feynman was an all-around good guy. You will get my 1986 copy that I have read year after year for at least ten years.

3) To encourage female participation, the woman mileage winner (doesn't have to go over 200 mi, just the woman who ran the most) gets a new Splish swimsuit of her choice from me. She also gets the book. Have at it, the womens!

4) Mileage runner-up gets a prize: Michael Pollan's book "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Definitely one of the best books I've read this year - highly recommended for anyone wanting to know more about where our food comes from.

5) Please report your weekly mileage from Wed to Tues, for example Wed Nov 1 to Tues Nov 7 would be the first week.

Anybody up for this challenge?

Edit: I originally thought November has 5 weeks, which would put the weekly mileage at 40 mi/week (something that I thought I could do). MJuric called me on my math, and I am sorry if I mislead those of you who thought they went for the "40 mi/week challenge". My bad.

I certainly will not be anywhere close... but I would like to know more about these slightly used speedos? What were they used for? Are they available for purchase?

Now that I know some of you guys look through the special needs bags for kicks, I'm gonna put some really weird stuff in mine. I can see it now. Can I claim to be a woman to win a xmas present for the little lady? :)

What calendar are you looking at? Nov has 30 days....always has...well in recent history. You know "30 days has November...."

So thats 4 weeks and 2 days. Where did you get the extra 5 days? In order for me to hit 200 miles I'd have to average 6.6666 miles a day, I don't think that's gonna happen.

But at least I know that November only has 4 weeks.

On the brightside all I'd have to do is run a marathon twice a week for the next four weeks and I'd be in....

Good point MJuric, November has only 4 weeks and 2 days, not 5 weeks. I took liberties with the calendar and added 5 days to fill out Sunday-Saturday weeks. I agree, 5 days is a lot to add to a month.

Now the 200 mi challenge is a lot closer to 50 mi/week for 4 weeks. Yikes! I think I'm going to get a sex change operation and join you in womanhood. No way we can run that kind of mileage now - we're still in the 30's.

I'm going to maintain this thread and watch the big boyz and girlz duke it out.

This is a great idea if you carry it out over three months. You must avg 200 miles per month, and you must hit 200 miles in each month in order to win those awesome prizes. One 200 mile month won't mean sh*t come race season especially if done now.

Agreed, but mileage-starved folks have to start somewhere. Perhaps you could issue that 3-month challenge and propose the prize. Ever since this challenge business mushroomed yesterday, I haven't stopped thinking about it. If a goofy challenge can motivate some folks, we've done some good.

All the challenges so far have targeted the mileage monsters and may intimidate the BOP slackers like me. But there are other ways target those folks as well. I can see a mileage challenge for 0-35 mi/week runners, a 5K challenge for 20-21 minute runners, etc.

And I think the prize giving business is just great. I remember Scott Molina giving away his old race T-shirts at one of the club races, or Collins crafting the nut-head trophies for the inaugural Ironman. That's the spirit.

Sure, post it and I'll update the OP. Let's do Wed to Tues.

Seeing how you and I have our hands full at 30ish mpw, it is pretty laughable to think that we'll jump up to 50 and stay there for 4 weeks. It's all in the execution I guess.

For me any intensity goes against my ability to put away the miles. Saturday's 5K cooked me enough that I didn't do a long run on Sunday. I have to guard against racing too much or running the workouts too hard.

FM is the poster boy for more is MORE. When he's not injured. Which he's not now, so I can't wait to see it when he unleashes all of this on his next race.

FM, yer really gonna do zero biking for the next few months? Wow, that's a leap of faith I don't think I could make. I need to ride at least a little so I feel like I don't lose too much bike fitness.

the bike is collecting dust indeed...haven't been on it for a while (besides a 2h ride a few days ago)...So 2h ride in 5 weeks.
Besides, with all the running, I don't have much legs left for cycling anyway. It will go on like that for a while...but I'm rethinking mid december and thereafter and adding a bit of cycling. I don't think the 130mi+ run weeks will happen...If I stick to 120mi for now and then drop back to 80-100 when I get back on the bike and swim, it will be plenty. Then balanced again in january.

I'm running 50+ miles a week, still riding (but only recovery pace) and doing some swim maintenance and am managing not to eat much and the weight still isn't changing much grumble grumble. Cough up yer numbers for November's 2nd week (Wed 11/8 to Tues 11/14).

There was some confusion earlier this week on what constitutes a running week. It's Wednesday to Tuesday. So folks who gave me their numbers from Monday to Sunday or whatever, could you PM me with your updated numbers?

Also if I've got your first week wrong, please feel free to correct me.

Thanks

(I sucked ass last week: 26 mi. All I'm doing is running, and I can't even break the 30 mi barrier. That's pathetic.)

So I'm running my 30 mi weeks, and it's not a piece of cake. I have ups and downs in energy level, motivation level, etc. From where I am I can't see running the mileage that you do.

My question to you is: how do you manage your up and down swings? What do you do when you feel like crap? Do you force yourself out the door? I would think a certain level of pig-headedness is critical in racking up the miles, no?

I just want to run more consistently, but I find that consistency is hard to achieve.

Well, today I felt tired and my legs were heavy but I still wanted to go for 13mi...nice day, sunny (like every other day here)...
so I just run with no watch, focus on being light on my feet and ignore the pace...if it's 8min/min, so be it, it's the pace for today, if it's 6min/mi, good...I really try to focus on sensations, specially on days where I'm tired.

Motivation? rarely an issue...I really love training.

Soulswimmer, I gave you 96 mi up to Tues 14. I didn't include your 20 miler on Wed 15 which will go toward the 3rd week.

Looks like any of 3 or 4 runners can claim second place. Lemme toss in a prize for second place to spur on the competition: Michael Pollan's book "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Great book - you'll never look at foods from the supermarket the same way after you've read it (especially meats, eeeek).

I think thanksgiving is going to hamper me a bit, I think I'll still hit the 200 but won't have the chance to get extra miles in with the travel and cold.

Next 4 days I'm in Santa Fe so will run less as at 7000+ ft it's a lot harder.

Er, my race pace during olympic distance tris was barely faster than that this year :) Aiming to be much faster next season.

I'm putting the slow into long slow distance at the moment. I'm also on a slightly reduced mileage week but that may not show on the weds-tues week as I'll pick it up again next week.

Sorry, if you want a real challenge try running backwards or converting those Midget Miles TM to proper miles :)

I have a copout too :- I had to take Saturday off as I must have hurt something during my barefoot run on the beach Friday. Was walking to dinner afterwards when I got a pain and could suddenly hardly walk.

Was able to get my long run in on Sunday after rest and ice so if I can get my afternoon run in today I'll (just) be on target for the week.

You've already won this challenge. Being a bulimic midget is an unfair advantage! Also I'm running against the added air resistance at sea level which is hard work and slows me down :)

Week 3 totals, Wed-Tues

Wed - the planned 20 (longest run ever)
Thurs - the painful 5
Fri - 10 on trail
Sat - 12 (4 easy, 4 LT pace or better, 4 easy) all treadmill
Sun - 5 easy
Mon - 10 on trails COLD, half tempoish pace, half z1/2
Tues - 8 on treadmill, meant to go another 10 but had a mild bonk.

70 miles, more than planned, longest week ever by 7 miles! I believe this puts me at 166 after a slooow start.

I am torn about the end of the month because I have a 5k thursday and a planned recovery week supposed to start Sunday. I actually feel pretty good with no aches or pains. Lost about 4 lbs in last 2 weeks and started today a little dehydrated/under nourished. Considering pushing through 8 more days and recover first 3-4 days in December.

Though there is thread about age groupers perhaps not requiring as much recovery as they might think... any thoughts? Should I compromise my 12 week plan and risk injury to achieve a number? My last 4 week period before my Dec 31st 'A race' 5k would need some tweaking as well.

Ok, you're right, I already know the answer...I'm coming for you FM2.0 !!! Maybe another 70 mile week with a last day of the month 22 miler to end at around 258! That would be unreal for me. Just got serious last November and ran maybe 50 for the month in 05.

Realistically, I'll see how it goes, don't want to blow all my improvement with a stupid injury.

triyourbest has come out of nowhere to claim 2nd place and threathen FM2, who is starting to show weakness... I predict a photo finish.

soulswimmer has also made a major move and is now sitting precariously in third place with a struggling kdw hanging onto fourth for dear life.

Lazy Ben has hit a glass ceiling and seems incapable of running more than 52.5 mi! Somebody help him...

Other heavy hitters like rroof and txvet have yet to report, so things can change in a hurry.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all. And happy running.

Anyone care to up the ante in December to 400 km. (~250 miles)? I'm ramping up the running through the end of January and could use a bit of outside motivation.

Week 4

Wed 6 miles
Thurs 10 miles easy trails (wrong start time posted for turkey trot, go figure)
Fri 10 miles treadmill intervals
Sat 8 miles
Sun 4 miles easy
Mon 21 miles LSD (hurt like a bitch, strained a quad and probably would not have finished this run if it wasn't for recovery week coming.)
Tue off, felt much better

59 miles+166miles =225 miles

I am probably about done other than 5-8 miles in the next 2 days. Reallly need recovery as I have 1 more month of roughly the same.
Will post a full report as to how completing twelve 50+ mile weeks affected my run fitness, times, knees, weight, attitude, etc. This is from someone who never ran more than 40 a week, never 2 weeks in a row, and averaged 20-25 over the course of season.

It just feels horrible - I have been living with a huge amount of stress since February, and it is finally catching up with me. I show all the classic signs of being overtrained - and I'm not overtrained from running - I'm over trained from STRESS.

:-(

Not sure how well my marathon in Feb will go. I will go and do it, and try to just enjoy the day. Then I will have to seriously re-assess my goal of doing Comrades in June 07.

I hear you. Whenever I go through periods you're describing - and I go through them alot - I try and get back to seeing my training sessions as a relief from life's stress, not an additional burden.

It's easy to forget that the exercise is supposed to be the fun part of the day, and not another responsibility that we somehow have to cram in.

Easier said than done though. I get the feeling that you just may surprise yourself come that February marathon day! ;-)

I'm sorry about the stress, AP. Maffetone liked to say that the body can't differentiate between life stress and training stress, and that the athlete needs to make sure to recover from the accumulated stress or face burnout. I used to be skeptical of this concept, but now I'm sold on it. The best time to get ambitious about training is when you have your shit together.

Having said that, the more stressed you are the more important it is to keep in basic shape. Nothing fancy, just make sure you put in 45-60 min of any activity that's good for you. See the Dev Doughboy Program. It does wonders for mental stability, as I'm sure you're aware. The whole trick is to get out of the house every single day and break a sweat... despite your brain telling you "f*ck it, just stay home".

Bottomfeeder,
I would be curious to hear your opinions about your own question from earlier in the thread as you continue to run longer and more frequently, especially if you do it for a couple/few months consistently, especially if you get up to 50+/week.

kdw

"So I'm running my 30 mi weeks, and it's not a piece of cake.

I just want to run more consistently, but I find that consistency is hard to achieve."

I'd like to turn the tables on you and ask YOU your opinions on the matter. After all, you've been running more than I.

I will take a stab at answering you though. In my case I was a slob much of the year until I decided I had to turn things around in August. I've been increasing my training load ever since (focusing on running since it gives me the most bang for the buck, and doing some swimming and strength work on the side).

I don't know about y'all, but it has been an arduous journey for me - plagued with bouts of fatigue, mood swings, backsliding, over-eating, self-doubt, lack of motivation, etc. These things still haunt me to this day, but to a much lesser extent, so that I can say that it's getting easier by the week. At least at this stage, more training begets more consistent training, better eating, more even mood, etc. It's funny how it works.

How do I manage the bumps on the road? The best I can, which sometimes is pitifully poor. Every time that I am dragging, I have to make a decision: do I get out the door or not? Most of the time I find that getting out the door and getting on with the exercise is all it takes to enjoy my evening, so the dragging was a ghost. For me it is sheer will power to make the right decision (the pig headedness that I alluded to earlier), so that I have to expend some emotional energy to get going. For somebody who's fundamentally weak in the will department, it's hard. But as I said, it is getting easier!

There is one little trick that I have found helps motivate, that is to run with a group. So I'd say if somebody is hurting for motivation, they should try to hook up with a group (be it running or swimming or whatever) and get free motivation that way.

Ok, I've tallied up my final numbers, and the totals are better than I thought. Remember, I am in the women's category!

Week 3, 43 miles

Week 4, with it's 9 days, 50 miles.

This has been a great challenge. Thanks for the inspiration!

txvet, I love your numbers!

The womens' challenge just heated up all of a sudden. You're at 180 mi as of this morning. I take it you're not going to run tonight?

AndyPants, you're at 130 mi as of Tuesday. If you start running NOW and don't quit until midnight tonight, you may just win, and you will have to change your screen name to BADASS. If we see you posting on ST today, we will know that the battle has been lost! :-)

Been on vacation and my running miles show it.

Week 3 11/15-11/21 21 Whopping miles. Includes a pitifully slow 22:35 5K
Week 4 11/22-11/28 19 even more pathetic miles. Also including a slightly less pitiful 22:11 5K turkey trot. (Note to self, never start behind the dude with his wife and stroller. Especially when you're running with 1500 of you closest friends. BTW did anyone here do the Cape Coral Turkey trot?)

Soooo as I see it I have a whopping total of 108 miles and I only need to run 96 miles after work tonight to reach the 200 mile goal. How does 40 for lunch and 56 after work sound?

On the long term front...Does anyone besides me find it unlikely that I will run a 18-19 5K off of 2-3 months of 40-50 mile weeks? Who's starting the December challenge?

Don't show these numbers to Francois. <smirk>. Welcome back Matt.

Hey look at it this way, that 22:11 is your new PR, isn't it? Congrats. As far as running sub 19:00 on 2-3 months of 40-50 mpw, part of me wants to say "No way Jose!", but the other part of me says "Hmm... you never know. 12 weeks of that kind of mileage is a serious streak for anybody but the letsrun crowd."

One thing I have learned to appreciate after running these recent 5K's: you really need to do some speed work to bust out a good one. The intensity level and pace of the race are so high that a guy just running base miles will be ill prepared to sustain them for long. That said, it's probably still beneficial to run a few 5K's during base training, just don't expect top-notch times.

You can still do some (just not much) speed stuff in with the long miles. And a few months of this then lowering the mileage but adding intensity should mean that you're faster than you used to be if you do it right. And if like me you have a few pounds that you can drop in the process that will help your speed too. If this isn't true then my plan for next season is sunk :)

O.K....all I could squeeze in during lunch was another 4 miles - a hair short of the 103 miles I needed. These frickin' patientes with their damn illnesses are really eating into my training time! :-)

So, brings me to a rousing 17 miles for the 9 day "week" 4. Along with a spectacular 16 mile week 3, my grand total is 101.

Actually down from my average over the past 3 months. Looks like the pressure of this Challenge was a bit too much for me!

1 min/mile is a lot to take off your pace in 3 months. However, it wouldn't surprise me if you did. I ran a lot of miles last winter, and didn't get much faster until I dropped the mileage back down again.

If you are running 25 miles/week now, I would spend a month building up to ~45 miles/week with no intensity. Meanwhile, I would order Pfitzinger's "Advanced Marathoning", and once I gut up around 45 mpw, I would start following his 12 week "Under 55 mpw" program.

I don't think you should try and run 5Ks simultaneously with increasing your run volume. Once you stop increasing your mileage, you can slowly add some up-tempo stuff such as 8x100m strides or 15-30 minute tempo runs (the pace you could maintain for a 1 hour race).

At the end of 3 months, I think you will be surprised at how fast you can run a mile.

If you are running 25 miles/week now...

I'd consitantly been hitting closer to 30 for a while and the last weeks prior to vaction averaged around 30-35. The plan is similar to what you laid out just building up to 45-50 miles a week and just holding that for a while. Hopefully holding it until that mileage seems "Normal". After that we'll see.

I don't think you should try and run 5Ks simultaneously with increasing your run volume.

The first 5K was planned to get an idea on where I was at right now and the second one was a "Hey why don't we do that race". We were on vacation and it's always fun to do out of town runs. The wife and I did the 5K and the youngest did the "tot trot"...which was awesome. I don't think I could do regular races and high volume. A "Race" effort, reguardless of distance, takes it out of me.

Having failed to live up to my nom de plume (like that Francois?) my revised "long" week 4 total is:

The previously advertised 63.5
Plus 8 miles yesterday
And an 8 miler and a 5 miler today

That gives a week 4 total of 84.5

Added to my 3 identiweeks of 52.5 each my grand total for November is 242 miles.

Thanks again to BottomFeeder for starting the thread and doing the tabulating and offering the prizes.

Thanks also to Francois for being an odd mix of inspiration and cautionary tale/village lunatic. I don't think I've encountered anyone who can tolerate that much mileage before and it's pretty impressive.

Hmmm... triyourbest is still AWOL. He must have gone out running on November 29 trying to reel in Francois and... well, just kept on running. ET call home.

Meanwhile I think it's time to close this challenge. Thanks and congratulations to everyone for participating. Props to the kdw and soulswimmer for breaking the magic 200 mile mark. And special congratulations to the prize winners: txvet, Francois, and Lazy Ben.

Now let's all keep this up to make Desert Dude proud (he's been advocating consistency on the scale of 3-4 months).

Don't blame me! I've never had a nemesis before but I'm sure you can't drive one to death by overtraining.

Thanks again for organizing this BottomFeeder. I'll read my prize, start eating mung beans and boiled tofu and recycle it as a prize for the December 200 mile challenge.

I'm hoping to keep this running lark going through to my march marathon so Desert Dude will be impressed (well, as long as I don't post my times...). Francois is already running rings around everyone in the December challenge.

Yeah, thanks again BottomFeeder! I was supposed to take it easy running Late Nov-early Dec and ramp up starting in Jan for Boston, but hey...

LOL. You need to talk to parkito. He'll tell you to listen to the angel on your right shoulder and run twice a week. :-)

I just had Amazon send you that book, Lazy Ben. I hope you enjoy it. Whatever you do, don't let my paranoia about the US food supply rub off on ya. :-)

I'm blaming you if I end up eating like my mother-in-law (no meat, no booze, no salt, no pretty much anything edible...)!!!!

Hell No! rroof, don't listen to him! I need a support group for Boston. It is 32 degrees outside and I have a 6 miler to go do. Brrr.

My little angel advice was more of a mini time out for Francois. So unless you are running 400+ miles per month with an injury prone history, doesn't listen to Bottomfeeder!

Haha. I was teasing you. I know you meant well when you told a highly accomplished professional(?) triathlete with more talent in his big toe than you've got in your entire body that he's nuts.

32 degrees? Sheesh - I did 5.8 miles this am at 19 degrees in the dark ... Likely running another 4-5 tonight (in the dark again) :(

Well well well, lookie what we got here... Mr. triyourbest just reported logging 78 mi for his last week (9 days) of November and claiming second place in the challenge. And here we were afraid he might have sat back and pound the Hagen Daas due to, um, the pressure. Congratulations on some beautiful running, Mr. triyourbest.

You know what this means? 1) I have mileage envy, 2) I am very happy to bring this thread to a close finally, and 3) Lazy Ben, at nine miles behind, you're a TOTAL POSER!!!! (said with a hysterical tone).

The bad news: You are a very evil man.

The worse news: You and I are most likely to be neck and neckmileage-wise throughout the month of December. I foresee a terrible smackdown developing, and I really hate being on the losing end of one of those.

Have you taken any days off yet? ;-)

You mean a mileage smackdown, a consistency smackdown, a race time smackdown, or an old fashioned WWF style throwdown? I'm not above teaching an old man a thing or two.

Yessir, I took Sunday off. Damn, something tells me I'm already behind.

I wrestled in high school, but a bout with some nephews and nieces a few years back clearly indicates that option is out.

Calling me an old man suggests that a race time smackdown could be pretty dicey for me. Nix that one.

Consistency could be really good as you have indicated a lapse already (you wuss). This requires closer scrutiny.

Mileage smackdown, this unfortunately, is what it is all about. On the surface, I think I am right int he mix, given your total mileage for November. But, the way you ramped up the distance over the month spells doom for me. I may be eating a lot of crow come New Years Day.

A mileage smackdown it is.

Oh yeah,... WUSS!

(I wonder if Francois could email me some tips on how to dramatically ramp up ones' mileage to uber-Kenyan levels in three weeks?)

You are so going down... unless I'm going down first. First week's results will set the tone for the rest of the month, and I think it will be uggggly. December is a funny month too as the holiday distractions can throw a big wrench into the best-intentioned plans.

Somebody better not get a divorce out of this! :-)

BottomFeeder, I am very hurt :(

Just because I took that one lousy day off in November!
