i did mention it to the RD, and numerous other friends at the event, and we all enjoyed the story. only a dick would have issued a penalty in that situation was the consensus - one i still agree with. if that family is out there again this year i will maybe give the mom a little giro d'italia-style racer-push from the motorcycle up the big climb.
