How are you doing young lady?

I had to bump this thread. I enjoyed reading all the responses. I applaud everyone who contributed.

This thread rocks.

I'm doing much better. Much, much better. Time does make things better, even if it doesn't seem like it will.

Since race day is tomorrow and the advice from this thread was so great...

I did pretty well at getting back into training and then got hit by a car while riding. Banged up pretty good, so that ended up affecting my training way more than the breakup.

Anyway, changed my goal to "just finish" due to still nagging injuries from the wreck but I'm so excited to be here.

And along the notes of the thread, I met someone new, and he had this waiting in my hotel room at check in. (He's also driving 6 hours to bring my forgotten running shoes).

So yes, things do get better ;)

So my boyfriend and I broke up this weekend, and I haven't gotten out of bed in 2 days. In addition to the crippling depression I'm feeling, I have no motivation whatsoever to continue training for my IM. I'm at 3 days off already.

Any advice or words of wisdom? A good old' HTFU is fine also.

PS if anyone needs a cute female roommate for IMFL, hit me up.

Many pearls of wisdom have already been posted about getting back to training so I'll refrain from any more advise on that. Lets address the "crippling depression" that you mentioned. Although I could be way off in left field, I do suspect you might be possibly looking for answers to the million questions that are going through your head right now. Don't do that. You are not going to find the answers you are deeply searching for... and if you do... its just going to open the door for many more questions and continue its vicious cycle. If left to continue it will eat you up from the inside out. In time some answers will come to you about this ordeal... but when they do... it is really only mute... since you have already moved on and it doesn't really matter anymore. I know it is easier said than done right now, and I can't say I have personal experience in a matter such as this, but through other experiences of a different nature I have learned to not think too much about the could of beens, should of beens, and what not (in some cases it will scare the living hell out of you).

At risk of sounding harsh... The "break-up" is what it is... a break up... nothing more, nothing less.

ps. his loss... your gain... and I hear Florida is nice this time of year:) Good luck.

What a day.

To sum it up, it was a lot harder (mentally) than I expected. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can go out and do an IM, no matter how long it takes them to cross the finish line.

I had a strong swim. First lap was a little shaky as I was trying to adjust to all the people swimming all around me. The water felt like a roller coaster. Felt much more comfortable in the second lap.

Bike is usually my strong point but I had a very, very difficult bike. Felt great until that really bumpy out and back road which just broke me mentally. Stopped at special needs and ate some popcorn. Really wanted to give up around mi 60-70 but kept at it. I swear I had a headwind the whole time ;)

I had no idea what to expect for pacing so I tried to stay in zone 2 the entire bike. So I had a really slow bike but didn't feel awful starting the run.

Run was uneventful. It was mentally much easier than the bike, for whatever reason. I didn't love the dark state park part, but can't complain about much else, course-wise. Drank a lot of chicken broth. Kept up a roughly 9min/mile pace until about mile 24 where my knees gave up and I had to walk.

Got to the finish chute and saw my boyfriend right before they called out my name. It was a really amazing moment. Finished at 13:56 (expected to do better, largely due to the bike). Felt pretty good yesterday and not too sore today.

And just to throw it in, the volunteers were AWESOME.

Obligatory finish line photo:

Forgot to add.

There were peletons on the bike leg. I know this is news to no one but I was a bit shocked when the course marshals just rolled past groups of drafters without making any notes. Thumbs down to the massive amounts of drafting.

Re: IM training after a breakup [iJen0311] [ In reply to ]

Congratulations. You should be so proud. You had a good run pace, too. Also, you're a cute couple.

Thank you for sharing your story. This is a special ST thread.

Again, congrats. Sorry to hear about the drafters though.

Glad to hear that you persevered through the training and the long day at IMFL. When I look back on some of my favorite races, I find that I'm actually more satisfied with the journey leading up to the race than the race itself.

Enjoy your accomplishment and good luck on your next goal.
