How was your race?
What a day.
To sum it up, it was a lot harder (mentally) than I expected. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can go out and do an IM, no matter how long it takes them to cross the finish line.
I had a strong swim. First lap was a little shaky as I was trying to adjust to all the people swimming all around me. The water felt like a roller coaster. Felt much more comfortable in the second lap.
Bike is usually my strong point but I had a very, very difficult bike. Felt great until that really bumpy out and back road which just broke me mentally. Stopped at special needs and ate some popcorn. Really wanted to give up around mi 60-70 but kept at it. I swear I had a headwind the whole time ;)
I had no idea what to expect for pacing so I tried to stay in zone 2 the entire bike. So I had a really slow bike but didn't feel awful starting the run.
Run was uneventful. It was mentally much easier than the bike, for whatever reason. I didn't love the dark state park part, but can't complain about much else, course-wise. Drank a lot of chicken broth. Kept up a roughly 9min/mile pace until about mile 24 where my knees gave up and I had to walk.
Got to the finish chute and saw my boyfriend right before they called out my name. It was a really amazing moment. Finished at 13:56 (expected to do better, largely due to the bike). Felt pretty good yesterday and not too sore today.
And just to throw it in, the volunteers were AWESOME.
