Lake Placid 70.3 - Who is IN?
Starting this up because I don't see a thread anywhere.

It is going to be COLD! Long range forecast shows a low that morning of 37 and a high on the day of 62. PERFECT running weather, but getting on that bike is going to suck! What will everyone be wearing? I'm thinking arm warmers alone are not going to cut it with a tri top and shorts! I plan on toe covers and potentially a long sleeve cycling jersey. Thoughts?

I'm not racing, but like you said I would anticipate a rather chilly race. IMO, early September in Lake Placid is chancy to hold the race. It should be a very scenic ride though with the leaves starting to change colors.

There's quite the potential to come out of the water and start riding in 40 degree F. Some might just keep on their wetsuit. :) I'd definitely wear thermal toe covers, cover up helmet vents possibly, and add a long sleeve tight fitting top over a tri top so that I could junk it at one of the aid stations once I was out of the risk area for hypothermia. I'd probably even take the time to put on some gloves prior to heading out of T1. There will be athletes at the early bike aid stations wearing garbage bags as they shiver their butts off. After that it should be a great day as overheating shouldn't be an issue.

Have fun at their inaugural half.

I am racing as well. Conditions are similar to Muskoka 70.3 a couple of years ago. I wear a sleeved Tri suit and just wore full fingered gloves and I was fine. It was roughly 40 when I started the bike.

With LP you never know it may snow so I will be bringing stuff for every condition just in case.

I will be there. Was thinking the same thing...gloves, warmers, long sleeves, hat under helmet. I was trying to estimate what wind chills would be going down to Keene...Brrrrr

Initial 70.3 for me, so I'm just there to get across the line. Cooler weather after the bike will help with that.

I'm racing and not planning on wearing any warming gear. I race well in the cold.

I'm IN.

Share same concern on temps with you, may put on a thin cycling jacket that I can stuff in my kit if necessary. Gloves fo'shure.

In this case I may actually look forward to the run, should be text book conditions!

I'm racing. Similar thinking on gear. Maybe bring a vest too. Will pack full range of stuff just in case, but thinking toe warmers, sleeves and some additional layer on top should be enough. My question is, are there any specific rules about ditching gear at aid stations? Thinking about just bringing old stuff that I would not be unhappy to part with. Thanks.

Pretty sure that you can discard anything at an aid station, not just in the middle of the course somewhere.

Today's forecast says low of 45 and high of 67. Can you tell I'm obsessing about the weather?

The run weather will be absolutely perfect! Can't wait! I love Lake Placid!

I am participating. I rode the coarse a week ago, it was 48 at the start of my ride. I wore arm warmers and a thin cheap plastic cycling jacket I purchased for $30 on sale. The jacket warmed me up pretty quick and I just plan to toss it at one of the zones. The run should feel amazing but swim to the start of the bike may be uncomfortable for a bit.

I'm a bit more worried about the water temps personally. Anyone know what kind of temperatures we should be expecting?

I'm in!

Had no idea about the weather forecast so I'm going to have to start thinking about packing accordingly!

I'm excited about the course. I always think coming around the first loop of the bike at IMLP that it was a piece of cake. It's the second loop that sucks... so that should make for a very good 70.3!

Good luck everyone

I'm in. First ever WTC event after almost 30years of doing tris.
Facebook page said water was 69 as of yesterday.
Going to have to figure out what to wear on Saturday. It does look to be cold.

Road conditions were okay, once a lane is closed :-) There was one lane traffic due to construction at the bottom of the Keene decent but I would imagine they would have that opened up on race day.

If you all haven't seen it they took away the second out and back and relocated it to the road going to Mt. Van Hoevenberg. It is a freshly paved road with a incline at the turnaround, just be careful after the turnaround as you are carrying some speed going back into the 90 degree turn.

The lake was 66 when we were there and has since gone back up to 69 as reported.

LOL......Participated in the Lake George NY Oly this AM. 39-41F at start with 69F water which was hot tub-like! Running to T1 sucked as did the first several miles on bike. Imagine IMLP 70.3 will have change tents........as this 'racer' will be taking his sweet time getting dry and dressed for the Adirondack morning shift of Kelvin scale temps! Mercifully, the long range forecast has us dry (for now). Was hoping race start would be something cushy like 9AM but tradition prevails with the 7AM rolling.....

I question if we'll get the swim in. Temps are forecast to be in the high 30s (37-39F) at race start.

Get ready to bike-run!

I'm seeing temps of 64/42... Are there rules for cancelling swim if air temps are too cool? I thought this depended more on water temps. Or is this just at the discretion of the RD?

Agreed with 62/42F high/low for Sun. Looking at temps for Sat night into Sun however, it seems the lows are forecast to be in the high 30s. Wunderground gives you an hourly estimate of where temps at 7am on Sun should be coming off the Sat night lows. All highly imprecise obviously this far out, come Thursday we'll know more.

I think the water will be just fine, I just worry about the cold air temps. Not sure what the guidelines / rules are.

At IM Lake Tahoe a couple years ago, air temps were in the 40s, as I recall. The swim wasn't so bad, but the start of the bike was miserable. I put on a speedsuit top and gloves. They made arrangements for a clothing drop part way through the bike.

Does anyone have experience with the water temp/air temp cancelling the swim? I read that USA Swimming wants the total temp (water+air) to be above 118. With a lake temp of 60 and are temp of 38 that is only putting us at 98

And if they do cancel the swim? Just bike run? How do they manage the start of that? Rolling?

I also heard that they ended up cancelling the half on Sunday because of multiple hypothermia cases. I hope LP 70.3 has a better fate!
