User error. Bike manufacturers can be blamed for plenty, but this is not one of them.
From what you write I take it that you did not check that the derailleurs worked properly after you unloaded/reassembled the bike (from your account it sounds that you bent the hanger while transporting it in your vehicle).
Checking them to operate cleanly through the whole gear range after man-handling/transporting the bike is not BMC's responsibility.
I think you learned an expensive and painful lesson...
Disclaimer: I don't own a BMC and don't care for them for a variety of reasons.

The hanger is made of aluminum and the 2 drill holes make an excellent shear point. Likely it may have been slightly bent by me during travel but when I shifted in the largest rear cog, which is something as a STer, I do rarely, it go tangled in the spokes and snapped like a twig.
Moral of the story, for 20$ I think I will buy a few extra for peace of mind.
On the bright side, i got a taper week and gain a week of IM build since I don't have to recover.
