I think the intent of whoever reposted it was to prevent it from being buried. As soon as the shit hit the fan Friday she tried to take it down.

I am sure it differs from place to place, but I knew a reserve officer in Dallas. It was about a year of training (all day Saturday, and I think one night during the week), and then he basically served as an unpaid DPD officer for a few days a month. I think he was always paired up with another cop, but don't remember.

this is a hot topic with law enforcement and cyclists in SoCal, especially considering that a recent death was likely caused by an officer that was driving and texting.

this story is still getting a lot of air, it was just discussed again on one of our larger local radio talk shows as well. Gladly one of the hosts was also disgusted with this person's tasteless youtube rant.

I sent an e-mail to Chief McLean with a respectful tone but suggesting the offending reserve officer be terminated. Within 2 minutes Chief McLean called me to discuss the matter. As Monty already noted, reserve officer Weintraub has already resigned. According to Chief McLean, he met with her after he suspended her and while the investigation continued. He told reserve officer Weintraub he could not envision a scenario where she could ever come back to the department. Chief McLean is embarrassed as are all the other officers in his department.

I was impressed that Chief McLean called me back. I live in the Midwest and am unlikely to ever influence anything in Southern California. Chief McLean is handling this thing head on. Accordingly, he has handled every single media request personally and is trying to call (not just e-mail) everyone that reaches out to him. He told me he was at the office past midnight on Friday dealing with the firestorm and again all weekend. Regardless, Chief McLean asked me to post his direct phone number in case anyone wants to discuss the matter with him. I told him I would do so. You can reach Chief McLean at (815) 525-4474 ext. 122.

Now for the good news. One of the people that reached out to Chief McLean is a personal injury lawyer in Southern California that has represented several people injured or killed in cycling accidents with vehicles. That lawyer is also himself an avid cyclist and advocate for the likes of those on this forum. He invited Chief McLean to meet with himself and a cycling advocacy group out of Los Angeles to discuss training for Chief McLean's officers and ways the City of Santa Paula can educate the public about the rights and responsibilities of cyclists. To his credit, Chief McLean is meeting with them this coming Friday and seems genuinely excited about the opportunity to better train his officers and educate the public.

One last thing. Chief McLean told me his officers have been taking a lot of heat for the comments of former reserve officer Weintraub. According to Chief McLean, they are all disgusted about her comments, which do not reflect the value or opinions of the department. I likened it to cyclists that don't obey traffic laws and generally make a bad name for all of us. As a cyclist that tries to be respectful of the laws relating to vehicular traffic, I cringe every time someone assumes I ride like those with no regard for others or the rules of the road. Let's make sure we don't paint the entire Santa Paula police department with a broad brush.

Thanks for this update. This is great news:

I was also impressed with the Chief's immediate response to my email. The bikinginLA blog was a bit cynical about the above coming to pass, so I am glad to hear of the meeting.

With all of the different posts of accidents and the ignorant responses from other drivers, and from the law enforcement officers, this is absolutely some god coming from this. Hopefully the SPPD can use the lawyer and advocacy group to make real change in his city, and maybe become an example for other departments and cities!

She apparently tried deleting it but someone figured out a way to keep it on youtube, no idea how.....

What's published to the internet stays on the internet forever. Someone else will try to upload the video if the original is taken down.... because they would have grabbed their own local copy while the video was available. Go after them and someone else will... until you run into an Internet troll who then shares the takedown story on 4chan or reddit.... then within an hour there will be hundreds of copies of that video on not just youtube but every other video sharing site.

That's how the internet works.

Well I got that, but what comes up is actually her youtube page as her video, not as someone else hosting a copy of it, which is how I thought it would be.

why don't you just start a new thread, because i think it's confusing how you did it, putting the update as an edit to your original post.

with regards to your edit and update, this is classic engagement strategy probably counseled by a trained public affairs professional.

So, asking if she gets it or not is probably beside the point. It's an information war.

"8/5 Some good may come out of this after all. Seth Davidson, a local cycling ummm cycling "advocate" some of you may know, and the LA County Bike Coalition met with Santa Paula's police chief to discuss ways to improve driver/rider relationships, and ncrease education and safety.

Then, turns out the woman that made the vid reached out to a cycling blog (http://bikinginla.com/) to talk to the blogger to get a better understanding as to the outcry her video produced. The result is below. Truly contrite or Damage control? maybe a little of both, but certainly a step in the right direction (although sadly some of the comments to this new vid reflect the same old "bikes don't belong on roads" crap, but little by little...) Also certainly a much better outcome than we usually see, which is people slinking off into the shadows. At least she had the guts to post it.

Thanks for posting Chris

I agree probably a little of both. It would be good to see if the cycling community could get her out for a few more rides.

Seems she might just want attention since who would want to hire her. Ignoring her might be the best for everyone.

So take my editorial question out of the equation. Is it better than the way these things usually end? Worse? No different? I'd say better by a long shot, but that's just my .02.

She was the one that reached out to Ted Rogers of bikinginla (a pretty important blog out here), I think that says something. She could have gone radio silent, if the reason she didn't was public affairs, is that so bad given the result?

Yeah, just feels like damage control and self promotion. She clearly is harboring a desire to be a celebrity of sorts and this seems to advance that agenda.

Another idiot trying to benefit from her stupidity.

Sure, she "reached out" to the cycling community and tried to learn what all of the fuss was about. The fact the she had to do this is, alone, proof of her lack of fitness for law enforcement.
Looks like a bit of a media whore right now…..

At least she took it a step further by actually meeting with cyclists. She could have done the simple pro-athlete method: 30 second video saying 'I'm sorry'. I bet she was nervous meeting with the bikers. Ignorance is bliss...until that bliss is lifted.

exactly. that's the thing about engagement, once you do it you open up for counter moves. It's never ending. Best to ignore her.
