Muncie 70.3 - let's play "Rolldown or Nah?"
My "good, not great" predicted race time of 4:5x looks like it would put me somewhere 20-30 in my AG. With Muncie being one of (if not the) last qualifying races for Chattanooga, I assume some of the fast guys will already have their slots. Any chance a spot rolls down to 20?

I'd guess nah, as it is that rare championship race in a 1 day driving distance from the Midwest. Probably won't roll past 10, right?

Are we playing based on the question:
  • Any chance a spot rolls down to 20?

or

  • Probably won't roll past 10, right?

Because a "Nah" answer will give completely different implications depending on which question is answered...

Also, hard to predict without knowing your AG. If you are in the F65 then I think there's literally no chance of it rolling to 20.

Anyway, I guess "Nah".

I say roll down about 2 slots. If the championship was out of country about 20 or 30.

It rolled down to 105 (out of 417) in M40-44 in Tremblant (6th slot). Which I got with 5:10 :) I was not even planning to go to ceremony, I just happened to walk near the stage 10min before my group, and out of curiosity I stuck around. Other groups went even lower.

My input is to stick around, you never know.

I was 6th last yr, sub 4:30 in 40-44. Not sure I will repeat that but regardless I will be halfway home
when they do awards. I know how bad we both wanted ITU worlds slots 2 yrs ago, good luck next wekend! It rolled at least past me last year.

I predict deep roll downs. Some AGs deeper than others.

ETA: Absolutely, without a doubt, go to the "ceremony" and stay til the very end. Even if your AG is done, other AGs could have slots reallocated. Sometimes, they have a hard time "giving away" all the slots.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

You never know. M45-49 at BSLT rolled to 16th last weekend, and he was only there because he's local. So it's unlikely, but possible. If it rolls more than 2-3, then it can roll a long way.

And it's not just people who already have slots. Others declined because of other plans - September IMs, vacations, focus on Kona, etc.

Here's to hoping that Chat70.3 Worlds dilutes the field at IMWI the same day.

Definitely go to awards and roll down. Im in M45-49 and at Raleigh 70.3 it rolled down to my sorry 20th place at 5:12 as well as the guy that came in after me.

Cheers and good luck!

From what I've been reading on here, it can roll pretty deep, in some cases turning into a "who wants it".

If I were looking for a slot to Chatty, I'd give the race my best effort and go to awards if I needed a roll down.

Just do your race and go to roll-downs no matter where you land. I was 11th in my last race and missed one of 4 slots by 3 places, if I was 3 years older in the same race, I would gotten the 2nd slot out of 6 slots that ended up rolling to 20. You never know who shows up to roll-down.

However, if I had a guess, I would say good amount roll-downs given that recent races like Syracuse, Raleigh, Eagleman etc. have had some deep roll-downs in popular AGs. Maybe a handful of people who have heard about that and just want a slot even if they're not that fast may show up, if they have the money and time, but even they may be people just at the 5hr mark or more.

Definitely on pins and needles about that Chicago roll down! At least this will be done that day. As a guy who's unlikely to fly to a race any time soon, Chattanooga offers a unique opportunity (much like Chicago).

Good luck next weekend - say hi if you see me. Tall blond guy with a bright lime green and orange kit (with "Bales" on the back, as you speed past me).

I would definetely go just in case!

I don't know if it's a fair comparaison but I was at Victoria 70.3 and loads of age group ended up being: who is in that age group and want the slot? So really you could have finish dead last as they were rolling down and walk over to the stage to get a spot for the "world championships"... haha

It's worth noting that there are 1/3 fewer world spots (50 total) at Muncie versus other recent US 70.3s (most this year had 75), but ya never know, especially if you're in a larger age group.

it rolled down pretty deep at Raleigh. I got in with a 4:35 for the 35-39 age group, just jogging the run and getting ice at every station.

what's the chance of Muncie having 50 slots and being the last race in the same year as WC's to qualify in the future? trying to plan my next academic year, and Muncie to qualify for WC's in South Africa could work well.

I would bet against Muncie being the last qualifier for SA as it is one week earlier than Chatt (Sep 1-2 2018 vs. Sep 9-10 for Chatt). I'm hoping for it to be the first qualifier for France 2019 but more so hoping for my bike fitness to improve enough by then to actually be a qualifier :)

much appreciated. So, Munci is 7/8 this year. Where's the info on the 2018 date? any chance the '18 WC qualifying races are posted? With races like Ocean City and Florida selling out so quick, it'd be kind of nice to have that list of race.

i've been keeping my eye out for that as well but haven't seen it. I raced the full in SA and while I loved the town and would eventually go back, I'd rather put my energy to getting as many shots at France as possible.

Slots rolled to 80th in Edinburgh today. I believe some just weren't claimed in England recently even via the old 'OK hands in the air if you want to go!?' method

While I might jog the run, I can't imagine a 4:35!

Are you closer to Muncie or Raleigh, or does location not really matter for you?

for myself, location doesn't matter as much. Raleigh won't work going forward due to my school being on the quarter system, which means class through the third week of June. Muncie is two weeks into the summer break, and then WC's are eight weeks later, so that's what I'm thinking could work for myself... or scrapping WC's in the coming years and doing Atlantic City 70.3 since it's an hour from Philadelphia and would eliminate balancing school and prepping for Muncie simultaneously... but this is way off and pure procrastination at this point!

I wonder how much making the 70.3 WC a roving event has affected it's draw on athletes. Las Vegas love it or loathe it, was an iconic location; at least people could brag about 'Vegas Baby' on their social media if they Q'd.

true. returning to one iconic location could be wise, though the idea of using the race as a reason/way to travel to new places is also appealing

Again agree with you. But if I had the money to travel to several 70.3s in far-flung locations, the WC aspect wouldn't be a factor my choices.

the WC aspect, for me, makes the affording it part a bit easier to swallow. otherwise, traveling for a race seems kind of waste - would rather go train somewhere new than stay off my feet, race, recover, fly home.

Answer was "nah"

5 slots, only rolled to 10th in M35-39. Not sure any AGs went much further.

On a personal note, I had a much better time in my second 70.3. Raced under control the whole time and did not have to walk on the run. Still on the wrong side of 5 hours, but getting closer.

Oh, and DanStu is still a beast.

Was surprised at how few roll downs there were across the board. Only 3 spots were re-allocated.

I enjoyed the race overall even though I missed a spot by a few places in M30-34. But for this Florida flatlander that run was a shock to the legs. The parking was the best entertainment I have seen on race morning.

Yeah, I guess most folks at that race were close enough to Chat that they wanted spots. Definitely not much roll.

The run was as tough as advertised! I'm also in a pretty flat spot and while I ran a good, steady run I definitely could not get in a fast rhythm. Literally all up or down on that course.

I see why - fair course, nice venue, great volunteers.

What color kit did you have? I think I cut a ridiculous figure out there, even for a triathlete. I'm 6'4", 170 with a lime green kit, white arm coolers, white visor, frameless shades I forgot to take off after the bike.. Oh, and I wear one of those Breathrite-type nose strips. Total dork.
