Autumn is the season for age groupers to apply for "sponsorships" and "elite" teams. Wattie ink opened up their application process, but was rejecting people who didn't appropriately Rock The W.

And The Real Starky announced Team TRS...

...which attracted a different type of applicant.

Bart Aernouts' paycheck for 9th place at kona wasn't enough to cover both a beer and a plane ticket home, so he's racing the xterra world championship on Maui in hopes of raising enough to get off the islands.

Meanwhile, the Austrian Federation, as usual, was rumored to be trying every trick possible to get their athletes on the podium.

Gomez raced the Life Time Fitness Tri in Oceanside with a retro hairstyle that cost him 1:30 minutes on the bike.

But Specialized sued him in T2 for trademark infringement, forcing him to change it for the run and costing him the race.

Back at XTERRA world championships in Maui, all the mud caused a last minute, unfortunate course change, ruining a few kids' pumpkin picking.

And Dave and Mark were caught cutting the course during their weekly ironwar re-enanctment.

All the mud made for a great marketing opportunity for the Oakley Hydrophobic Pen, but nobody could figure out how to caption this photo from the art department.

In the end, Spain's Ruben Ruzafa defended his title but was photo-bombed by a halloween ghost with a special hawaii greeting.

Instead of a band at every mile, budget cuts in the lawsuit-plagued Rock & Roll half resulted in just a lone banjo player at the finish.

The Beach to Battleship ironman was more of a fight than usual.

Slowman wrote an article about WTC's enforcement of its trademarks, and we learned of 50 new "ironwords" it hopes to trademark. Those applications include all but one of the following; presumably it already owns that one.

Trying to bolster the trademark application for "Road to Kona", ironman VP Jeff Edwards has been territory marking on the Queen K.

And trying to enforce its application for "A Ticket to Kona," WTC staff have been stalking airports worldwide and leaving their mark.

A NASA rocket reached 70.3 meters/second, violating wtc's trademark of that number. The rocket instantly exploded.

Kids have been egging the houses of everyone who has carved a triathlon pumpkin. But sparing the pumpkin, for it's an innocent party.

Realizing they'd screwed up the finisher's medal, ironman Florida cancelled the swim to make sure no work went unrewarded.

But to make up for the gaffe, they deployed a crack team of bike marshals to break up the pelotons.

At IM Lake Placid, Rachel Jastrebsky finished 7th and Dark Mark handed her a $3400 fan-funded check.
At IM Florida, Rachel finished 4th and Mike Reilly dropped a pumpkin on her head.

And Lionel Sanders, too humble to call himself "Ironman Champion" after winning a duathlon, sent a proxy to accept his award.

Meanwhile at Noosa, the Aussies hired competent water safety officials so the swim could go on.

Apple sent some of its factory employees to "volunteer" at a Taiwan 70.3 aid station.

And at the NYC marathon, Meb was crowned king for a day and American Superhero for a lifetime.

The usat board, feeling guilty about its role in the west african ebola crisis, decided to help. But after 5 hours of bickering, could only agree to send finisher medals to a tribe of Maasai in Kenya.

The Taiwan 70.3...love it. Keep 'em coming!

In Chattanooga, hoping to eliminate participation in competing holidays, Andrew Messick changed his birthday to December 25th.

And in the Bahamas, Tim Don accepted Dark Mark's cornrow challenge.

Ben Hoffman liked the look so much that he got hair extensions. Which gave him the nerve to ask his girlfriend to marry him (she said yes).

Luke tried to join the fun, but had to go with the rasta hat & wig combo.

Tim looked so perfect in the cornrows that he starred in a remake of a famous film.

Liz Blatchford and Mitch Robins cruised to $7000 paychecks at Challenge Forster. Meanwhile, a stacked field competed for 2nd to 6th place scraps at the so-called "Australia pro championship" at ironman 70.3 Mandurah.

IM Brazil was boring. As usual, Mark and Scott got lost when they cut the course during their weekly ironwar re-enactment.

And NBC aired a recap of an October 11 baseball game, interspersing inspiring stories of regular people who play softball.

Aussie Luke Bell cruised the swim at Ballarat 70.3, saying, "Conditions weren't bad, maybe a little bumpy at times."

While back in Arizona, ironman officials promised "...we're serious about breaking up the draft packs this year."

Rappstar was in the lead for a long time, but eventually slowed as he carried a display for World Bicycle Relief.

And the border patrol chased down Allen and Dave when they tried to cut the course in their weekly ironwar re-enactment.

Rock & Roll Vegas, reeling from lawsuits and short of cash, cut the "bands every mile" and simply went with a 2/3 scale statue of David Hasselhoff at the finish.

Annoying everyone who camped out overnight, Rinny used her All World Athlete medal to cut the registration line for IMAZ. And then claimed a second spot by signing up her husband as well.

Tim O'Donnell's acceptance of outside assistance backfired when his ride detoured over the Rockies.

X-ray photo imaging revealed the sponsor logo hidden on Brent McMahon's bike. Dropping that sponsor correlated with him dropping to race weight and winning IMAZ.

Not until morning did they learn that "Team USA" simply meant finishing 32nd at USAT Age Group Nationals (and getting a roll-down slot to Worlds).

That would be a short event if it was me, and I would be fine with it.
