How many of you guys/gals ride motorcycles or used to?
Do you still?
Did you give it up?
Do you miss it?

Yes... I ride still and have for many years. I never gave it up so I can't miss it. I'm not a die-hard though. If I had to give it up I might miss it for the nostalgia, but wouldn't fret over it. I've seen some friends get hurt bad and one that died on their motorcycles. I ride while I can and once that time is over I'll just accept the fact.

I have a Suzuki SV650s that I ride about once a week. I'm only really 6 years into motorcycle riding, and got started when I was injured and couldn't run. Rode a lot those first couple years. Now not as much, but mostly because I want to bring a bike to work so I can ride during lunch. Otherwise I'd be riding the motorcycle almost daily. 58 mpg on the cycle vs 25 in the car... no-brainer.

I still ride my motoBECANNNNNNNNNNNE!

Even had a race anouncer call me out on it once ("Oh, OLD SCHOOL, he's on a Motobecane!") Not invigorating.

Saving up for a better road bike by 2021.

Last moto was a Triumph Street Triple. I sold it 4 years ago.
Summer is short in Canada and the nice days I was debating bike, topless Jeep or moto. Moto lost out 9 times out of 10.
I was riding 4 times per year.

I will get another eventually

played WERA for a while, loved my RC51 in the heavy weight twin class.

Then started coaching at STT on an inline 4, but never adapted well to them.

Grenaded the sucker on the back straight at Road ATL and never looked back.

That $300/month tire budget payed for a few dirtbikes, then a Super Air Nautique, and finally a bicycle. Everytime I think how expensive being a triathlete it, I just think back to buying tires all the freaking time.

Still miss my RC though.

2009 BMW K1200R, my primary means of transportation when the weather is nice (and sometimes when it's not). I'm leaving in two weeks to ride the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Third time I'll be there, gets better every year.

I used to ride. Started on a Yamaha SR500 - horrible bike to learn on as it's only one cylinder and no electric start. Easy to stall, hard to start!
Second bike was a crashed MotoGuzzi 850T I rebuilt. Loved that bike and not sure what happened to it.
Third bike an 82 Honda CB900F. Was nice, fairly docile as far as big bikes go. Had the full fairing, including the leg fairings. Sort of a sport tourer, I guess.
I do miss it. But now with kids almost on their own, I'm hankering for another bike. Not just any bike, I want something pretty distinctive, and throaty and just absolute eye candy. I want the big bad boy Ducati Superbike 1199 Panigal. I'm not too old for that nonsense, am I?

Yep, ridden, commuted, toured, raced and of course crashed.....
I ride far less now after having 2 kids and racing IM again leaves bugger all time to ride it than the occasional commute to work.. zx-10r commuting.. :-)
But i can't bring myself to ever get rid of it..

I have a Nightrod Special, one of the first ever released and I overpaid dearly for it. I used to ride it quite a bit and I thought I was a hot shit for having one. When I got it I was a 25 y.o. single guy and it was one of the best "excessive" purchases I could have made at the time. I rode it so much I had to get new tires about every 3 months. These days it spends time collecting dust in the garage and gets ridden maybe once every two weeks. I just can't bring myself to sell it. It's just too damn cool.

Like one of the other st's I had a speed triple and sold it a couple of years ago. Also had a Harley nighster during the same time. Also sold that and now have a 99 sportster hardtail bobbed/chopper with a 6" over Springer front end. The only thing stock is the engine and the front half of the frame.

Don't ride anymore. Wife had baby 16 months ago and for some reason I just don't have the "itch" anymore. So it will be going up on craigslist soon. If I'm on two wheels it's either my tri, mountain, or road bike.

Will probably get one again when the kids are grown up.

Loved that bike. My buddy had one way back when (~10 years ago). Great ride. Of course, he laid it down on the 401 and escaped with a punctured lung, broken ankle and a shit ton of road rash.

On the original topic, I used to ride an R6 when I was younger, quickly got sick of riding on the road and started track riding. Then I got into bike riding and sold it. Got more pleasure out of self powered two wheel action.

True to my user name, grew up on east coast and will still say that after many years of a variety of endurance sports I have never done anything harder than racing off-road enduros on the East Coast of US; Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

Former off road Katoom convert for motard and recently sold sport touring (VFR). I think I am on the verge of owning as many bikes as motorcycles over the years. Started on a GT80 (4-up) and I think I have had just about every major brand save a Harley.

I miss off roading very much, but SoCal is not the place for this (not into desert) as I grew up surrounded by single track woods.

IMO, in terms of triathlon lots of carry-over in bike handling, especially descending, and mental toughness in longer events from years of riding.

Thanks for stirring some very good and sometimes "painful" memories!

I've been riding since about age 4. Raced motocross until college. Charter Life Member of the American Motorcyclist Association. My dad and I have a few vintage Husqvarnas. Just recently sold a 2011 Sherco 2.9 trials bike, as I didn't have time for trials, triathlon, and a new baby. My road bike is a '06 Ducati Monster 620. Motorcycles are kind of my primary interest.

Loved MX since a kid, but no bike until 16. 1976 DT 125- not much but moved to a 1989 YZ 250 and began racing moto at 26 yrs old. Got a 1999 YZ400- loved the 4 stroke, then went to a YZ250f and broke my ankle and then my collarbone. Thanks to my assistant coach introduced to tri, sold the mx bike and bought a supermoto 250 to ride back and forth to school. Miss the dirt a little but then I just go jump or curb or ride the Mtn bike and all is good.
Love tri- cheaper, safer, and no need to go anywhere to train other than out the door. LOVE IT

I have ridden since age of 5 and still ride today at 53, and have worked in the motorcycle industry for 11 years. Road raced for sixteen years, spent a ton of money and broke lots of bones, but was able to win some races as well as a national championship in 2001. I have never been one to ride a lot, just mainly used my bikes for transportation to work and back. After I started racing, riding on the street was just boring and too dangerous to ride fast. I did get hit by a car in 2004 and nearly lost my left foot. After the Dr told me my running days were over, thats when I got serous about endurance training. I currently ride a 2007 KTM 690 SM. Sweet around town bike. I put tons more miles on my bicycles a year then I do my motorcycle.

fell in love with Motocross in '77 raced till I made expert in '81 (Peter principal, got my head handed to me). Found running as training and was better at it than MX. Then triathlon, even better. Raced MX as a "senior" in the late '90's was a blast. Good skills for riding close - it's called banging bars for a reason. Taught me aggressiveness - never give an inch in a corner.

Current ride is '13 KTM RC8R 1190 (got it new a few months ago). Fast? Don't ask.

:-) on that thing it's not hard to...

enjoy the journey!!!

Actually that is what got me into Triathlon... Broke my left ankle and had to have 4 screws (2 on each side) while racing motocross (Honda CRF250F) back in late 2006. Ortho told me I probably wouldn't be able to run again and if so I wouldn't be as fast. Did my first super sprint tri in May 07. 1st IM in March 08 and just finished my 15th back in May. And got a BQ and ran Boston in the middle of it. So I haven't been back to see him to see what else I couldn't do... :)

I did however get rid of the dirt bike. Not smart being 40 racing with 16-20 yr olds without a care in the world. Just recently sold my 05 Hayabusa. One of my last rides on it was north of 150 mph and my thoughts afterwards were - it won't be a broken ankle if I go down on it!!! So all I have left in the garage is the trusty 2002 HD Heritage Springer. Bought brand new and has 25k on it now. Been to Sturgis on it twice, once trailered and once ridden (3000 mi+ in a week). Love the bike but haven't put 500 miles on it since I started Tris in 07 but I am on my 3rd bicycle. Sad... But worse than that is when I sold the Busa, my 3 yr old daughters pink wagon took its place. Guess that is what happens in a house full of women (wife and 2 little girls).

I love riding anything with 2 wheels. My current ride is a Honda CRF250L. Street legal, great gas mileage and I can enjoy some off-roading when I want. Maintenance is dirt cheap. If my wife would let me I would have no less than 4 different motorcycles but for now the dual sport fills most of my entertainment needs.

Wow. Good to see so many still riding and enjoying the freedom of motorized 2 wheel fun!

I had a big wheel KX80 when I was 11-12. Got a KX125 later, and used to ride my cousins XR650 later on. In my 20's, (before 3 kids) I had a SV650S and loved it. After kid # 2 and various medical setbacks, it sat in my garage for nearly 2 seasons and only saw the road 3/4 times. So I sold it. But the understanding with wifey, was that I can get another bike without the 3rd degree, when the time came. Well, some 8 years later, kind been feeling like that time is now. Been looking at/test riding Yamaha FZ6R's and Honda CB500x's. Really wanted to like the ADV bike from Honda, but feels like it may get boring in a hurry. Don't need a super sport, as I mostly will be going to work/running erands on it. Totally frivolous consideration, but I have had the moto itch for months now. Keep waiting for it to fade, but it's not.

Before I did that, I owned:
BMW R1200RT
BMW R1150R
Kawasaki KLX250S (dual sport)
Kawasaki ZX9R
Honda CBR600F4i

In my sport bike days, I got in a lot of track time. Those skills have really helped me time again on my tri bike. Gives you a lot of confidence on what you can do on 2 wheels.

Yes, I rode dirt bikes in the mid to late 70's, Husqvarna and Can-Am's and pretty much gave it up after I got out of college in 1981.
Yes, I gave it up for 25+ years until six years ago when my son and I started riding motocross. We've been riding motocross for the past six years. I'm currently on a KX450. My son, age 12, races 85's (KX85) and super mini, which is a KX100. The super mini with an 85lb kid rips not to say the 450 doesn't.

I leave the racing to my son but I've done a couple. I love just going to the track and chasing him around, hitting some jumps and railing the ruts. Rougher the track the better for me. Even though I'm 54, I'm probably in better shape then 95%+ of the people on the track. While the track and bikes are nothing like in the old days, the jumps are way bigger but most are safe if you land short. I roll the big doubles and tend to mostly ride within my ability. It's the most exciting sport I've done and plan to continue to ride as long as my body can tolerate it or I have a major get off!

My son, hitting the step up at Thunder Valley on the KX100

My current bike before graphics, numbers and scratches. 2008 KX 450. I found it with less than 5 hours on it.

I have an RZ 500 and an SV 650. I ride almost everyday so long as there is no ice. Last winter was tough, but the one before that I rode at least a day a week through December to March. Then back to the usual. I live in Toronto, so some mid January days made for hard starting, but it is otherwise invigorating to ride in the cold.

Used to. Last ride was a 2002 Moto Guzzi EV. Had it for about eight years but after I got into triathlon, the bicycles in the garage starting increasing and the miles on my Guzzi decreasing. When I fell below 2000 miles per year on the Guzzi, the annual minimum for maintaining proficiency, I sold it. I think about it whenever I see someone on a motorcycle, except when I'm on a bike.

Absolutely gorgeous bikes Waricke!

For the OP;

I grew up around motos both street and dirt. The last bike I had is a 2006 Yamaha YZF600R. The final year before Yamaha discontinued it. I'd still have the bike but let my uncle learn to ride on it in a parking lot. He had a slice on his throttle hand he didn't tell anyone about... he sent the bike into a dumpster and he went flying the other direction. Bent the forks and the triple tree; so it was totaled out. I started looking for a new moto but had to have the transmission rebuilt on my car a few weeks later.

I miss motorcycles some of the time now but enjoy riding my bikes enough to not buy one.

It is speedway season in So. Cal. right now and one can race 3 different tracks in one week. 500cc / alcohol burning / no brakes and a crash wall. You max the throttle, spin the rear wheel, then pitch it sideways and hopefully stay there. Then you hope the guy(s) next to you do the same. Pictured on the left is a guy whom I have been racing against all year. He was in the early 80's a top ten finisher @ Ironman World Championships. He shared the same office space with the owner (and friend) Dan Empfield of this site when they both were just starting their journeys in the trade. John Howard introduced him to the sport as he came from the Greg Lemond days of Cat 1 bicycle racing. He is one hell of nice guy. Does not look or act 60 years young. And fortunately for me can still handle something with two wheels attached to it. Even if it is a fire- burning dragon. We will be in the same bull- ring-of- race track this evening @ Industry Hills Speedway. Racing WFO. Pretty sure a few of you will recognize him. He speaks highly of the old group!

And fortunately for me can still handle something with two wheels attached to it. Even if it is a fire- burning dragon. We will be in the same bull- ring-of- race track this evening @ Industry Hills Speedway. Racing WFO. Pretty sure a few of you will recognize him. He speaks highly of the old group!

george yates and dave ruby schooling the kids getting sideways on the track every week. then doing the same in a local triathon on the weekend! true ironmen!!! fun watching you guys

Pretty safe to say thee best ever triathlete to ride a moto was David Bailey. He was early days triathlon only to crash and get hurt in 1987 while racing professional for a factory motocross team. Being pit boy for my wife in 2000 I watched as he battled with some other animal I believe from Brazil named Carlos Moleda ? I recall seeing them exit the swim together. Off to their bikes. Only these two guys were hand cycles. As if Kona ain't tough enough. Then they cover the marathon in similar fashion. . David Bailey is one of the nicest most humblest human beings I have ever met. Honored to have him as a friend. He still announces for motorsports and....................word is he is signing up for an Ironman in 2015 to hopefully qualify and return to Hawaii. Hell WTC or whoever the f owns Mdot would be lucky to have a man with such character as he on those lava fields again. I hope he makes it and I hope Ironman see's the worth and beauty in it.

I used to ride and race motorcycles. In 2003 I broke my femur due to a highsider which took a year to recover from. The surgeon told me there was a chance I would not be able to walk normally again, so I started training for my first marathon to find out. This kickstarted my endurance sports career in 2005 which led to triathlons.

After my crash I have ridden road bikes, mainly to commute. Since it's pretty crowded on the roads in The Netherlands you will have some hair raising situations every now and after I got pushed of the road by an ignorant car driver (in 2010 I think) I decided to sell my motorcycle and leave it at that.

I do still miss it though, albeit more the racing than the riding.

Please ignore the fact I'm riding a Yamaha wearing a Honda suit in the picture below. This is on my favourite track Assen.

thanks for posting the photo of Bailey et. el.

I now have a place in Bozeman and am wondering where the photo was taken - and what "tri-school???"

anyway, he was/is a serious athlete; though many MX'ers of that era (don't know about today) were as well. Saw him race in '81 when he was starting to get Real fast, and he was so so smooth, compared to say - Hannah (who had just recovered from his water-ski accident). Excellent fitness + talent = WOW! I have both of those on "back order" :-(

I saw this on a white board in a window box at my daughters middle school...
