6th Annual December Running + Drinking Challenge
Quote | Reply
It's baaaaaack! It's time for the SIXTH Annual December 200mi Running + Drinking Challenge.

December is a time of too many office parties, family dinners, over drinking and over eating. Most of us don't really keep track of just how much we drink during this season. I know it's waaaay too easy to get a lot of (burp) empty calories and also side-track a lot of training. However, December is also a really awesome time of year to log a sh*tload of miles to help keep your waistline in check. So, here we go for challenge #6...

Any running counts. Water running - use your LSD pace to figure that distance out.
We also log a point a standard drink (1 12oz beer, 1 5oz wine, 1 1oz spirits).

Who's in? Last year I manged the 200miles just by the skin of my teeth. Since I went and signed up for that crazy Comrades race, I have no excuses to exceed last December's total.
----------------------
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) join the 200mi Dec running & drinking challenge
2) join the companion 200mi Dec running & drinking challenge - the Drinking part
3) Log your runs in the training log as usual
4) Log your drinks as "Other" - 1 minute of "Other" activity = 1 standard drink. It's total not frequency, so you can lump all your evening's drinks into ONE entry.

After a few years off the wagon & back from a broken rib this summer, I've been in a decent training groove since mid-Sept & should be in the 250-300mi range for Dec*.

Count me in Andy!!

*Testing things out this evening after a little flare up of some plantar fasciitis...so that 250mi Dec target, may become zero - stay tuned ;-)

So, the goal is to get the 200 mi running and just log what we drink along the way? Do we do that here on the thread weekly? Or just in our own logs? I'm interested....just trying to figure out the logistics here.

I need a high volume December with 50K in both Jan (Frozen Gnome) and Feb (Mt Cheaha) so I am in. Plus I'll have a great start on the 200 with a trail marathon on Dec 1 at which we are considering bringing a flask and taking shots along the way. I wonder just how many "miles" I can log on Dec 1?

As per the instructions (RTFM), log your runs and drinks in the ST training logs. See the "TRAINING LOG" link at the top of the page.

And as for the "goal" it really is different for many folks, my first year was to have as much in both columns. Now I try to log my drinks because I am curious (and sometimes horrified) at how much I drink, and then of course to crack 200mi for the month, which for me is a lot.

Thanks for the info. I've never used the ST training logs and didn't realize that's what you were referring to (actually kind of forgot they existed). I should probably have assumed such given this is an ST challenge! 200 will be a lot for me, too, but should be good base building for IMTX coming up!

Thanks again. I'm a sucker for a challenge. :)

Well, I've largely quit drinking on a regular basis. But I do need to pick up my running a bit. I'll be doing a decent amount of that and should make the 200. A few months ago I probably would have made 200 drinks as well!

I hoped it would be 200 drinks and just log what you run. 200 miles is way to much for me, but 200 drinks. That's a walk in the park

Not a good excuse. A buddy of mine had one last Thursday and on Sunday morning he was mountain biking with us on a very rooty trail.

I try never to taper my drinking. It is sort of like ultra running - if you go far enough, slow enough, what is the point of a taper? What you want here is increased tolerance, which comes from steady slow increases in volume. Or something like that.

There were some major leagure drinking efforts in this challenge last year. I was in awe of the accomplishments. To my recollection, I had one big night (18 drinks), but otherwise I couldn't really compete with the big dogs (mostly from Canada - go figure).

I'll be back in for this year.

I'm in for the running part! Can I count my drinking from 25 years ago this month (4th year engineering post exams was enough for a lifetime....). Seriously though, I don't want to mess up the results on the drinking part of the challenge. I use the "other category" in the training log to cover my time doing weight training (yikes, I could get banished for even admitting that)....so I'll just sign up for the running part because otherwise I might mess up the drinking part of the challenge!

i've never been a drinker but this challenge might be just what I need to finally polish off those 4-year-old bottles of Havana Club that are gathering dust. maybe start drinking red wine (lowers the cholesterol ya know) too.

Not going to be pushing the running miles like I did last year (and getting injured). I did nab that BQ I was shooting for in January tho'. So, next marathon isn't until Patriots day, over 4months away. December won't be a high mileage running month. And, at 134lbs, I'll never win a drinking competition.

Shooting for 200 total. Hopefully 70% of those points for running. it will be a challenge!

Howdy! Sitting here drinking my rum and OJ, watching the SEC Championship, and this thread caught my eye. First week back running since June and about 20 lbs heavier than I would like, so my run total will be low. I'm no longer a professor, so I actually have to work in December now! We'll see how it goes. How many posts this year until someone says we are killing ourselves?

Today: Got 4.5 miles in, 2 recovery beers (forgot my muscle milk), and now to work on the rum....

Sweet! 2 new jobs and a new house in the past five months for me and Mrs. Quads. No time to race or train until now, but the house is on the same lake we were renting on, so I see the USMS 2 Mile Cable Swim National Championship in my future, and Jr. Miss Quads is set to move out of the kiddy tris and start crushing dreams of older kids next summer, so all is good now.

8 mile run this morning and so far 4 on the drinks. Too bad 1 data point doesn't make a trend...

I hear ya, I had two parties yesterday so I'm at 10k and 10 drinks for day 1. I'm aiming for 16k today, and definitely NOT 16 drinks ;-). My goal this time around is the 200mi - check and way less drinking than last time, say 60% of last year's total would be an improvement for me.

There is no way I'll even hit a 100 miles this month. Was running 40 miles/wk last winter and spring, then all hell broke loose in June and I stopped cold.

Just got back from a hard, slow, painful 10k in the muck and the mire.

It actually has, quite a bit. Much healthier physically and mentally these days, just have to get back into running and racing mode. Legs get the day off tomorrow - MWF are lifting days until I can get back in the water next May.

What kinds of beer are you two brewing?

Just got finished with the Waterloo-Pinckney trail in Michigan over the last 2 days, and chugged 2 tallboys in celebration. Just for the record I think trail miles should count for more and so should cheap ice beer.

I think I'm just going to take off running across America and drink nothing but vodka/crystal light and rum/Gatorade. That will show all of you.

Ok, make just a quick 5k on the treadmill and back to the White Russians on my couch. (:

Agree about the trail miles, did 13 today would have been a few more on the road, but less fun. Although I do think beers <6% ABV should only count as half a beer. :)

Yeah esp any light beer. Jeebus man I can sit down and drink 12 of those and get no buzz - only a major need to pee. What's the point? I'd rather run a few extra miles and drink beer with TASTE baby!

Well played, sir. Immediately respectable b/c it's from stone, but actually very drinkable and low in alcohol. I think it's a classy/less douchy alternative to brining something like Stella to a party.

It is counting the kms/miles as part of the challenge, but for some reason if you don't enter a duration, the run does not register in the challenge.

Just so you know who you're up against on the drinking side. Here is our basement brewery set up.

I did my first run of this challenge....nothing heroic on the distance front....30 min uphill treadmill run at 4-15% grade covering 5.5K. I'm training for some uphill run stuff next year, so my mileages on these runs will be penalized. I figure I did around 1200 feet of vertical in that run. Intend to work up to 6 mph uphill @ 10% grade which would be 1000m in an hour by next summer. Not sure I can do it, but worth aiming for.

+2 on both the trail miles and the beer %. I got in my two long runs and now its time for a recovery day or two with some easy short runs. Had some great Spatzen Oktoberfest beers on the first day of the challenge but have been lagging in the drinking ever since. Maybe I'll have to bust out a flask at work to make up for it.

You need to make sure you are adding a time (even approximate) for the run. It won't log against the challenge if there is no time.

I was trying that in the competition a few years ago. Sometime, especially on the runaway nights it can get pretty tough to remember. Usually just gets added in to the notes section. For the most part, my consumption revolves around the copious quantities of homemade beer that we have in the basement, and then the odd belt of bourbon or scotch. Once Christmas gets a little closer, the rum & nog and baileys-coffee will factor in a lot more.

I just realized...this isn't going to work out so well for me. I am working hard to inflate my total here, but I only have "good" beer...I'm averaging like 8-9% ABV per 12 oz., none of this fluff stuff. Toss on a bourbon or two for a night cap and oh boy...Christmas party this Saturday is starting to look scary! Especially with a few hours of mountain biking before it and a long trail run the day after...

How does the ranking work amongst those with the same totals?

There are currently six people with 12 drinks logged.
None have logged any distance or points.
We aren't ranked by #drinks/Frequency, alphabetically, or by any other obvious (to me) means.

Is it cross referenced with the running log?

Oof. Kind of embarrased to list what I've had so far, because it's just not my normal fare. I'll bite anyway....
- Saturday night - 4 glasses of wine (variety of whites) + 4 beers (all uber dark, strong - I don't remember the brand)
- Sunday - 1 Beck's + 3 goblets of some vodka that comes in a skull shaped bottle (straight up)
- Tuesday - 3 glasses of Chardonay

I'm really not a wine guy, but I'm out of beer, and I keep forgetting to stop at the store for more. Lame excuse, I know.

Running-wise: I kow I won't get to 200 miles this December. I'm just taking my time and having some shorter relaxed runs. It's a good time to just enjoy the experience.

My brewing has suffered the last couple of years as my training has increased. Your brewery picture inspired me though...ordered up the ingredients for my Rye IPA. Won't be able to get to it this weekend, but hopefully the next. Got some cider going but that is so easy...just not brewing if you are not boiling copious amounts of liquid and running water through grain!

Amen to that. Ours can output 15 gal per boil, though we typically keep the batches to 10 gal to avoid boil over. Once we land some larger fermenters, we're going to get 'serious'. Tired of using the 5 gal pales.

But I am happy to say that if you combine my running with the drinking we did during the race - I logged an ultra for this challenge - a shot at the start, three beers on the course and two shots at the finish.

I'm way off pace on all fronts compared to last year.

I have a huge drinking night on tap for Saturday night. It's the kind of drinking where my skills can really shine through. It will include several varieties of beer, wine, and liquor in no particular order. Kinda scary.

This may impact my ability to run on Sunday.

I don't think I can sniff the podium on either front but I am gunning for a top 10 finish in both, seems like a healthy balance. Not sure if I am happy or sad but it looks like the hard one is going to be the drinking part. I used to be a pro but looking at the early numbers you guys/gals are putting up if you don't end up in rehab half way through I may not be able to keep up.

This has been a VERY mild start to the challenge....

And this year, I might just be on cruise control on the drinking side, and don't want to over-do it on the running side (although this big guy ran a decent 5 miles for my 5th run back), but I do have a weekend with Mrs. Quads in Ottawa planned for the 28th - 31st, where things usually get out of control.

In past years I'd be off work from this Friday through the end of January, hence the lagging behind in all categories, including funness.

Thanks for doing this. I have an outside shot of making it to 2600K of running for the year, which is 50 K per week average. I know it is not a ton, but that would be a decent total for me, given how my year started. I need 220K in the next 25 days to get there (not sure if it is possible, but we'll see). The challenge will help. Thanks!

As Clay Davis would say.... shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt. If I didn't have to run (or work) everyday I might be able to roll with you guys on the drinks but in my old age (35!) I've suddenly become susceptible to the crippling hangover. Used to be able to dismiss it with coffee and hashbrowns. No more! I'm still going to take a shot at top 10 on the drinking but I may have to rely on a couple epic nights to get there.

Last time I was in Ottawa for a 'weekend' I was banned from 7-Eleven. Not clear on whether said ban applies to all 7-Eleven's or how they would enforce that but the guy was emphatic I was banned from his 7-Eleven.

Dude, oh wait that's me, I'm 44 and yes, having 1.5 months off in the winter was awesome. Good way to celebrate the holidays and jumpstart the training for the upcoming season. In the past I strove to be #1 in the drinking challenge, top 5 in the running. Now, I just want to be able to start running again and NOT be in the top 10 in drinking (hahahahaha).

Last Dec. when Mrs. Quads and I were in Ottawa, we had to ask if we were allowed back into our favorite bar the second night....

I informed my wife of this challenge....she was not amused! Good thing I didn't mention that I was doing a whole lot better on the drinking part (22nd vs 13th).

By the way, I think my drinks should be weighted and count more since they're 100% Whisky....

Frankly, I'm shocked to be in the top half! Anyone who knows me would be likewise. I attribute it to this past year spent in Ireland - where I don't often go big, but have been very consistent...

Xmas party tonight and another going away party tomorrow ought to boost my stats before I come home and (likely) mellow out a fair bit... Maybe I'll log my first run mile, too. :p

Seriously slacking on the drinking....I'll definitely put a few hard efforts in this weekend.

This challenge reminded me of something I came up with a while ago, but I stil haven't tried it (someday...) I call it the "Marathon Challenge". It's very simple: run 26.2 miles and drink 26.2 beers in 26.2 hours.

There has to be someone on here crazy enough to give that a try.

That's pretty doable. If I wern't married with kid I'd try it. Here is how it would go.

6-10 am Marathon
10 am - 6 recovery beers
2 pm - 6 more - nap
6 pm - 6 celebration beers
10 pm - 6 sleepy time beers
8 am - 2.2 hair of the dog beers - DONE!

Thanks for putting this on. My goal is 240K in Dec (basically 60k per week). 22 running days left and I have 180k to go. Just a bit behind pace. Need just a bit over 8K per day to get there. Next week should be OK as I am on business travel and running will be my only option. I'm not drinking but getting equivalent empty fueling calories through ice cream and upcoming Xmas goodies.

My guess is bud light lime or some other such slightly yellow water. If that was real beer (or wine, or liquor) I take it all back and it's Nic Cage from Leaving Las Vegas. .

What an interesting challenge this is. Drinking is just fine (thanks to the help of The Running Event last week) and lots of booze for the Dallas 1/2 Mary. Running mileage it lagging a bit, but a big couple of marathon training weeks ahead should bring me back up in the top ten. BRB gotta go celebrate the eastern time zone. :)

 EASY now;)

When I was a poor snowboard bum, I used to know the price of a case of PBR to the penny (so I could scrounge the change from between the couch cushions). I've since spent many a year drinking much more expensive, albeit tastier, alcohol, but I ain't too proud to pick up a six o' tall boys and knock 'em down. Sometimes, it just hits the spot.

PBR is too expensive around here. $8.99 for a 12-pack of cans v. $8.49 for a 12-pack of Miller Hi-Life bottles.

Tough day at work with a bottle of vodka on the counter top...watch out.

Only a pathetic 4mi on the deadmill today, it was POURING out there today and I was not in the mood to deal with nonsense. Will aim for another double tomorrow (like yesterday).

Otherwise on track so far although I've got a nice corn on one baby toe that's starting to annoy me. Besides self-surgery, any other suggestions from the unwashed masses?

7 miles of running today. Happy about that.

Strange challenge this year...usually I'm in the top 10 running, top 2 in drinking, and drop 10lbs during the month. This year, scaled way back on the drinking side, ramping up the running, and stuck at f'in 250 (race weight for me is 225). Oh well, probably lifting too much.

If we make it up to Ottawa (just got the architect's bill today for preliminary plans for the man cave (5 car garage with a lift) and the addition) - I still plan on doing my annual second half of the marathon course run.

I think I'm going to have to start doing shots of vodka randomly through out the day to avoid getting spit out the back of the peleton in part II of the challenge. My girlfriend gave me the eyebrow last night when I poured myself a scotch after finishing the bottle of wine at dinner and I actually said "What? I'm in jeopardy of falling behind in an unrecoverable fashion in the ST drinking challenge!". That, oddly, did not appease her, nor did the 2nd scotch.

Looking at the standings as we head into the Alps there are three people riding solo off the front, a chase pack of about 6 riders, another chase back of about 5 riders and a couple people (me included) trying to bridge the gap to the first chase group.

We need to get more organized here and work together if we're going to reel in otto, Quads and Rattlesnake.

Not gonna happen...vodka, creme de cacao, vanilla, and milk (poor man's white russian), along with a grueling week and a no responsibilities kinda weekend. As a handicap, I'll only keep track of the Vodka and I promise to be out the door by 8am on a run on both mornings.

We went to a party last night and I actually behaved! Blue Light as the beer of choice didn't help, but it was a good time.

Something completely random and unrelated - the hostess had a 1940s Gibson hollowbody stashed in a corner in amazing condition. When I found it and asked her about it "...oh yeah, that was my dad's, sometimes my 16 y.o. daughter picks it up and tries to play it...." She had no idea what it was, still not sure if she does now.

These ideaes are how we are gonna do it....if we can outdrink them, we have to have our livers out-think them!

I had a decent weekend. Mostly in mart to us dragging a margarita machine to our local cyclocross race. Drink consumptions had to be estimated.

As for the other side of the tracks...i have a triple marathon this weekend. Lets hope the legs hold uo. If not, iss drink the rest of the miles!

It all got started with a 3-pint lunch on Friday. After that, it was a marathon session (no, don't be silly, I don't mean running) through to 12am on Sunday. Many many beer were consumed. So much so that yesterday was spent doing absolutely nothing but watching football on the couch. Couldn't even bring myself to have a Baileys & Coffee. Pretty rough shape. Back at it this morning with a 12km run. Will add the short 5.5km run home this evening, and I'll knock down a few to keep on pace in the 'other' department.

There will be no catching Quads no me thinks. Good luck to the rest of you!

WTH? The way I read the rankings, you're only 5 drinks behind Quads. Now, it could absolutely be that I'm not reading them right--the whole thing is a little beyond me at times--but I will be very disappointed if you just roll over and give it to Quads like that. I mean, the man truly has a gift, but you, too, are gifted. I hate it when someone isn't living up to their potential;)

It went downhill very fast yesterday. I arrived home at 10:30am from a night of drinking only to be informed by a phone call that I was late to a family brunch. I freshened up my make-up, hair and hit the door. Extended family will make anyone drink.... Then trivia... Then "babysitting" friends... Went to bed at 1am. I'm pretty convinced at this point I have a drinking problem. I can start running again, small miles, but I'll log them...

Already signed up for it! Missed it 2 years ago when it got rescheduled due to a blizzard. Then last year I was injured and just spectated while my wife and a bunch of friends did it, still...they let spectators drink for free also. This year I am using it as a test of sorts to judge fitness...of both my running and liver.

I was making a good run on the drinking part of the challenge with so many parties early in the year, but have faltered as of late with increased morning workouts and just general fatigue making me to go bed earlier. Time to pick it up, because I'm dropping like a stone in the running part!

Ok, I have two suggestions for year 7 of this challenge:

1) Encourage participants to keep their bottles, cans, kegs etc and post weekly pics of the empties. Yeah, it smacks of a sophomoric beeramid, but who amongst us doesn't want to see it.

2) Have a predetermined celebratory race/party for the participants. The one at the NY brewery sounds promising, but it's kind of a haul for west coasters.

Just spitballin here..

You poor soul. I've had a couple of years in the top 10 of the running portion, but just knew it wasn't going to happen w/o injury this year, so I'm base building. The drinking portion though, I've been exercising great restraint for me!

And congrats on being the top OAF in the drinking portion. Beating Andypants is no easy feat.

No, you just want to be out in front of the main pack on the swim. Navigating through the vomit floaties is no fun. IIRC our plan was also a combined event, with points awarded for drinks consumed, and how late one stayed up pre-race. And then, the obvious rankings (above DNS) on race day.

edit: bonus points awarded for 'hair of the dog' aid?

While I admire your collective pursuit of pain I think a much better time is crushing the half first and then staying up drinking all night. The half is just enough pain to put you on tilt but leave the door open to an epic night of debauchery. Chacun son gout I suppose.

I've had this question about the rules of this amazing challenge bopping around during the last couple of days of inactivity. Say one night you get pretty banged up, might even lose a couple of drinks from over indulging... What happens then? One heave takes off one drink? Two takes off two? etc. etc.

Now I know the typical ST response will be, "I remember my first beer..." "Learn how to drink," "Obviously your beer wasn't aero enough." Or something along those lines, but AndyPants how does that work? Honor system?

i see no penalty necassary. Its proof of over indulgence in a realm of people with high risk of over-indulgence tendencies.

never the less.... if you are able to keep track of that many drinks being that hammered, you are either:
- a lightweight and not able to drink enough to lose count..
- lying about the drinks when recording...(which im sure we all guesstimate to the best of our abilities sometimes)
OR mainly... need to focus more on the drinking process and put away the notepad. (:

It is definitely a fast and flat course, I ran 6 miles on streets just off the course last year and was able to manage a decent pace even coming off of injury. This year I'll be shooting for not much over an hour with the reason being to beat the lines and get as much Hoptical Illusion and RastafaRye before those kegs kick. We hung around till 11:30 or so last year and people were still drinking away...so drinking $35 in beer is easily within reach.

You bring this up year after year, and I'm sure I get my blood work done more than 99% of the people on this forum, and the liver numbers are always spot on (despite non-alcohol related reasons for them to be messed up).

We are in a crazy bad weather pattern, and work is beyond stressful right now, so I'm likely to move way ahead in one challenge, way behind in another (unless I dig Mrs. Quad's treadmill out from the Christmas decoration overflow).

Everyone - have a great weekend!

Going to be tough miles on this end for the next 5 days... no treadmill/foot of snow outside/rural area no plows. May have to log some miles in the snowshoes.

I just poured myself a screwdriver...but you are three hours behind me time-wise and I have a ton of snow to shovel. Can't wait to get my next project - a 1956 Willys that someone traded to my uncle - going to get it running and throw a plow on the front in the winter.

Nice! Post hangover run had a coffee with some "43" in it - it's a Spanish liqueur I received from a supplier in Mexico earlier this year. Sweet, but not too sweet. Worked out nicely in the coffee. Now I must brew some beer - we're doing a grapefruit bitter today.

I read the damn "Anchorman II" thread in the LR, started to watch the original, heard "Cherry Cherry" then got out the acoustic and jammed Neil Diamond songs for three hours while drinking screwdrivers. There went a day....

I'm in the same boat as you - I have 119k to go and won't be running today and likely not tomorrow. However, I've planned [# of kms = Day of the month] i.e.: 25k on the 25th; 26k on the 26th etc. with at least 2 rest days in there somewhere. So 5 days with 25+km each day gets me over the 200mi total. Last year I had to run 35k on the 31st just to crack the goal. I'd like to have a little more "room" this year :-).

I don't think my biggest day will be above 20k but I don't have any planned days off running between now and Dec 31. Need to average 12k per day, so with snow and ice, that is just over 1 hour per day. Dec 31st will be either 16k or 26k.

Damn this virus! It's like morning sickness on steroids. No drinking or running for me for the last five days :/

I'm hopeful that I'll be able to make an end of the month rally, but, sadly, will probably not hit 200 this year. Damn it! The next question is will I be able to make up all these runs and still hit the 100/100.

Stay healthy gang. This fuckin sucks.

I've checked my totals and the 200 isn't going to happen...not that I thought it would when I started, but it would have been nice. Going skiing next weekend, although I'll do some running in snowshoes, the mileage will be even lower than my trail running. My apres ski totals should be nice though...

Great challenge! Enjoying it even if my liver is crying for relief!

Merry Christmas to my BC buds and all of the others on this thread. Looks like I've given up on running for a bit. We got dumped on this weekend AND the gym is closed AND my mother is staying in our workout room, so it looks like XC skiing and snowshoeing. Shoveled about 3,000 cubic feet of snow yesterday - does that count?

I've got no chance finishing anywhere near the top in the drinking challenge, but damned if my wife and I didn't try to make a comeback for her birthday the other night. We both had about 9-10 drinks, the most i've had in one sitting in quite a long time. So much that it took me out the entire next day, as I was huddled around the throne waiting to puke again.

Upon rereading this I realized just how scary this probably sounded. I didn't run a ton when I was pregnant, but stayed active throughout and only ran ~2-3 easy miles a day. Did a ton of yoga though (was teaching). After about 4 months, I had 1 glass of wine or a beer most days. All three kids are perfect :)

For the record, after last night, if I never have egg nog and brandy again, that will probably be OK. Oy.

I got dropped out of the top 10 (drinking) - again. What the hell was going on last night? There was 10 for AndyPants, 21 for Carolina, and lots of double digit efforts on a Wednesday no less.

Is everybody getting together and partying to run up the drinking score?

Running-wise: Another day on the treadmill. At least the current snowfall could mean that there might be some snowshoe action possible before the end of the month.

J/K, my wife is half-Swiss - so daily alcohol consumption while pregnant wasn't the taboo it is now in the US.

I just found an online calculator for liters to ounces - oops, I've been under-crediting my consumption by a sizeable margin but too lazy to go back and re-compute.

I am feeling better today, hope to get in ~10k later today, but that leaves 3 days to log 60k. I have done worse. Best of luck with your final 31k. My entire final week got completely derailed....originally, all I needed was 12k per day for 8 days....which meant running an hour a day with a day off and a single 2 hour run day. Seemed pretty doable until the flu from hell took over our entire home and left everyone out of commission for more or less an entire week. Oh well....got to my original goal of getting in at least 220K to get to 2600K for the year. Happy New Year to everyone. Hopefully you get to various athletic, personal and professional goals in 2013.

When you have a brewery in your basement, it is very hard to cut back on the other. However, yes, December tends to be the heavy month, and I completely blame this challenge.

Thanks. I now have the Leadman registration window up. Last day to get the earlybird discount. To 250 or not to 250 is the question. We did the 125 in Bend last year, and it was awesome. Who can argue with a race that has Deschutes Brewing giving out beer at the finish line? May need to spend a lot more time on the bike in the coming months.

Simply amazing venue. Aside from the near freezing temperatures at the lake in the morning. The 4C air temp made the 14C water feel warm. However, the water was crystal clear with really cool volcanic rock outcroppings along the bottom. The ride is just amazing. Cannot compete with that scenery anywhere. The run course leaves a little to be desired, but at least it isn't a silly 42.2km, just a hilly 22km to end the day.

For Christmas, I received ingredients for a batch of home brew. It dawned on me that I still had another batch from a present earlier in the year. Rather than make two batches, I doubled up the kits to make an extra strong batch of IPA. I The total malt in this brew was ~10Lb (for a 6 gallon batch). I'm figuring this will wind up around 8% or 9% when completed. I was in violation of standard homebrew protocol, because I did not enjoy a frosty beer during the process. I had a run planned for post brewing, and I knew that one frosty brew would lead to 3 or four more (and eliminate the possibility of a run).

The fermentation has begun, the run is complete, and beers are on the menu for the evening.

No, it warmed up PDQ on the bike. First 20kms were a little chilly while we dried off, but it got to 30C fast. The cold temp in the morning is due to the elevation in the mountains. Starts around 3400ft, IIRC.

Wow, that is some serious stuff! Basically you did two marathons (and more) 6 days apart! Thanks for putting on this challenge. It help me get to my goal of 2600K for the year (50k per week).

Close but not quite - kms not miles :-) Maybe next year though!

Great job everyone. Pretty impressed at the "fortitude" all around.

I'll post final results in a bit.

Well - that was awesome! Helped me hit my yearly milage goal.

However - I did not escape part deux of the challenge unscathed. Just hit the scale for the first time in a month and managed to gain 6 lbs during the challenge. I'm guessing 3 of those are booze related and 3 are the 50 lbs of cookies and chocolate I ate this month, because hey, I'm running 200+ miles so what's the harm!?

Looking forward to next year.

Good show all! Had fun, more on the drinking side than the running. Hitting the trails for my long runs and then going skiing the last 3 days "making" me miss my last long run meant no 200 for me, but I knew it going in and was shooting for over 160 and was able to do that. I did get an unexpected 2 mile run (race snow shoes, loaded boot bag, skis over shoulder, 1700' in elevation gain) in that took A FREAKING HOUR!!! when the lift broke at the mountain I was going to ski at. On the drinking side, apres ski along with NYE helped keep my drinking total strong.

Next year, definitely over 200 as instead of Boston being focus, thinking of doing Rim to Rim to Rim <snicker snicker>. Drinking total will still be strong! Till next year...

AndyPants: I'm pretty sure Otto won it but I'm still waiting for you to post the final results.

SteelerGuy: Look for me at the Run to the Brewery, I'll be wearing Asphalt Green and probably an Ironman hat. I'm M40-45 and if it is warm enough to not wear tights I have little M-Dot tattoos that look like chain grease on my right calf. But a month of junk miles and drinking has slowed me down. I'm hoping for a 6:30MM for the race so I may be little slower than you.

Everyone else: I entered the Big Kahuna Challenge, figured if I cut my drinking down I'll time to ride and swim. Anyone else in?

Nope, 'training' is never done! I am on a quest to log my 'other' for all of 2013, and not just December. Preparing to be very disturbed by the results this time next year.

Oh boy! I can't wait. This could be some serious entertainment. Garmin needs something to track this so I don't have to manually upload!

My computer blue screened when I tried to write a program to estimate my annual "other"

Following up on a previous post in which I confessed to homebrewing without a frosty beverage in hand....

I transferred the brew to secondary fermentation today - with a beer in hand. All is right with the universe. At this point, the alcohol content has reached 6%. It won't gain much in the next stage. The tasted is excellent (even without the carbonation).

Did I miss posting of results?

Bifff, I'll keep an eye out for you after the race if they are not buried in a cup the entire time. I'll be the tall guy lined up near the front that a couple hundred people will stream around for the first quarter mile only to be passed back in the next three quarters as they pant and realize they are not going to hold 5 min/mi pace the entire race. :) Looks like it should be sunny but pretty crazy winds.

Catfishing on Slowtwitch? The December Drinking/Running Challenge was great, I made some Slowtwitch online drinking buddies and training partners. We exchanged stories about our winter runs and drinking accomplishments. But I thought the posts on the forum were from real people. I was hoping to meet Steelerguy face to face at the 10 mile, Run to the Brewery, who I’ve had a few exchanges with, but I never found him. I really hope Steelerguy doesn’t have leukemia or more likely liver cirrhosis. I know he was probably just a little faster than me and the beer lines were crowded, but I now believe T’eo.

This whole Te'o thing is blowing my cover! Here I am trying to wrangle up a bunch of Slowtwitch online running/drinking buddies with promises that I will actually meet them at a race...it was working splendidly until ol' Manti made his confession/admission/whatever the hell it is. Here is a picture of me though to keep you dreaming till next year... http://jackmccoyphotography.com/.../h52ba593c#h52ba59ba (See I was there! Even managed a lame ass smile as I realized my sprint at the end wasn't going to get me under 1:02:00) The only Asphalt Green person I saw was Peter Castro, who I ran with for a bit. Headed straight for the beer after the finish, was disappointed they didn't have Hoptical Illusion tapped, but the Pale Ale did the trick and the Winter was pretty good too. Looks like we both went home with pint glasses!

Yep I know Pete well, you should have asked him about me. I finished just under 1:06, but beat Pete to the beer tent. Nice race, but the post race spread and beer was the best I've seen at any race. Here is me: http://jackmccoyphotography.com/.../h52ba593c#h52ba64a8 (don't know why I look so relaxed) Asphalt Green shorts, shirt and I did have an AG hat on for most of the race. I didn't realize I was second in my age group, I was too busy drinking beer out of plastic cups. Would have been nice to upgrade the cup to an engraved pint mug. I really didn't expect to place in my age group when I finished 52nd overall so I didn't go the awards. Steelerguy I'm glad your alive and well, I was really worried about how another catfishing story would have played out in the media.

Since my accident I've been wondering what to do. Despite living on the water, haven't been in yet and haven't felt like running or riding much either. Luckily Little Miss Jr. Quads is road racing this year (and doing quite well) which has me on my bike at least a little.

So on July 1 I'm going to start training for this - to get back to my former glory of 2011. Starting with 18 miles/wk, and increasing by 1 mile each week. Figure by 2014 I'll be down 30 lbs. and winning the 7th annual challenge.

Good to hear you're getting back to it. Best of luck!
