New Indoor Bike Training Software: PeriPedal
Quote | Reply
Hi Everyone,

I've created a new piece of software for indoor bike training called PeriPedal. PeriPedal is a Windows application with the goal of making indoor bike training fun. It talks to your ANT+ sensors to display your speed, cadence, heart rate, and calculate your power. You select the workout you want to do and PeriPedal will show you your target wattage.

It works similar to other indoor bike training software. It has some cool features that the other programs I've tried did not have, and were the reason I created the software. A few of the features are:

Support for multiple users - Works with up to 4 users simultaneously. The workout is adjusted for each user based on their FTP.

Netflix Integration - Ability to log into to your Netflix account and have your Netflix video automatically started or paused based on your cadence.

R-R Interval Recording - Records every heart beat.

For a full feature list, visit the website: http://www.peripedal.com

As of today I am opening up PeriPedal as a public beta. To sign up please go here:

http://www.peripedal.com/beta-test/

This is an open beta so everyone is welcome. After putting in your name and e-mail you should receive an email within a minute. Give it a try and let me know what you think. I would love to hear your ideas and any bugs you may find.

If you like this program please spread the word to other riders. You can also consider pre-ordering the software. This will show me that users are interested in paying for the software and support more development.

Here is an example screen shot:

Thank You,
Adam

Edit: I wanted to mention that I can't send (or reply) to private messages. If you want to talk to me privately feel free to send an email (adam@peripedal.com). Thanks!

Any chance of a TrainerRoad-style integration with known trainer power curves? That's their killer app, for someone who doesn't want to spring for a PM.

Love the direct integration of Netflix and other video.

I notice you're using Win8 Metro/Modern tile-icons on your home page. Any chance of a WinRT app to go along with this? That'd be another great feature - make it work with a Surface, so I can take that downstairs without a power cord (my laptop won't reliably last a workout on battery). They do have USB ports, so they should be able to work with an ANT+ stick. A WinRT app would also be able to get snapped to the side of the screen, and let the user just use the larger, main window for Netflix or whatever other video. You could obviously do an integrated thing that would read the video sources you already use for the main desktop version, but an RT version that can snap to the narrow side window is enough for what I want.

Thanks for the reply Bah Humbug!

PeriPedal does support trainer power curves. It currently supports 10 different trainers. I plan to support more trainers in the future as I get more power curve information. I will try to make this more evident on the website.

Thanks for the compliments on the video integration. I personally use the Netflix feature all the time.

If this catches on I would love to make a WinRT version. However, from what I understand the WinRT version would not be able to work with ANT+ sensors. I think it would support Bluetooth Smart devices, but I haven't verified that.

This version will work fully on the Surface Pro (as it runs full Windows 8), but having a WinRT compatible version would be great too.

Thanks for the feedback!

I will be checking this out. I have a PM, so that part isn't really necessary for me, but I just got an ant+ stick and would like a more interactive interface on my pain cave TV screen.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get through the signup process, which is hilarious as I am a software engineer and working on the signup process for a new free webapp that my company has built.

Stupid users!

Hi Chris,

I checked my mailer logs, and it looks like it sent your license key to the email you provided. Did you check your spam?

I'll send you your license from my personal e-mail to see if that helps.

Chris,

I also sent you your license key from my personal e-mail, so I'm surprised you didn't get anything. Do you have an alternate e-mail I can use? Please PM me (or e-mail me adam@peripedal.com) your e-mail address (to make sure I used the right email address) and perhaps an alternate address. I won't be able to PM back, but I will attempt to e-mail you again. Sorry for your trouble.

Adam

Haven't tried it yet, but I love supporting any folks doing work on ANT+ stuff - hope we see more of it.

And I love the idea of Netflix starting/stopping with your cadence - keeps you honest if you set it high!

Can you list what trainers you are currently supporting with power curves?

Thanks for the support!

The current implementation of the cadence play/pause uses a fixed value of 20 cadence, but I like the idea of making that adjustable and allowing the user to set it to a high number if they really want to challenge themselves. I've added it to my "To Do" list!

The following trainers are currently supported for Calculated Power:

BlackBurn Fluid
CycleOps Fluid 2
Elite Fluid Alu
Elite Volare
Kurt Kinetic AC Pro
Kurt Kinetic Cyclone
Kurt Kinetic Standard Fluid
Kurt Kinetic Road Machine
Performance Travel Trac Century Fluid
Spinervals Super Fluid 4.5

If yours isn't on that list let me know that you are interested in getting support for it. Even better is if you can point me to a power curve or send me a workout with speed and power data.

Question: Would it be worthwhile to make the color scheme user adjustable? Right now the background is dark, and the accent color is green. Would it be worthwhile to make the background adjustable (light or dark theme) as well as allow the user to select the accent color (blue, orange, green, red, purple)?

Sort of as an FYI for everyone, my license key email WAS in my Junk folder, so I had to pull it out. Don't know if there's a way AdamTriBiker can make it less likely to trigger those, but look there.

Seems ok, price is right, I do have a few suggestions though.
1. THe heart rate/power/cadence etc readings across the top- would be nice if they were bigger. I cant see them at the best of times, let alone with sweat pouring in my eyes. I keep my laptop on the ground in front of me, far enough away to stay dry. I had to rely and watching my garmin for cadence and heart rate.
2. Calculate the FTP for dummies. I do know that there is an FTP test and that there is an FTP field that needs to be filled in on the profile page. I know I did the 20 FTP test, and now I have a bunch of numbers showing power every 5 minutes. My 20 minute power was 343 watts, does that mean that is my FTP since it was a 20 minute test?
3. Ability to export a tcx file. My 910 somehow lost the workout when trying to upload, I cant upload a csv file into my Endomondo or garmin connect.
4. Back to the dummy thing, the 1 thing that would keep me with the other guys is the different workout plans they have set up. I am not a coach or a cycle guru. I have no idea what tempo, threshold, vo2max, ftp bla bla bla etc etc etc all means, let alone how I should make them into a workout. I just want to follow a calendar.
5. Metric would be nice.

Flaws - The only actual flaw I saw was heart rate spikes here and there. I wanted to see if they were from my strap but of course, my garmin doesnt even register the workout so I cant say if they were software of hardware related.

As for the movie part, not a big draw for me as I have a tv right beside the laptop so didnt try that out.

Overall, would be worth the $40 to me if all the above was implemented.

Take 95% of your 20-minute power, so ~326w. That's (usually) a decent estimate of your FTP. Could be clearer, but that's something that I would imagine is coming more towards release. Being beta, I'd expect polish items like doing that automatically to not be there yet.

Haven't gotten to play with this yet; some chores had to be done. Should be there in a few hours though; can't wait.

Thanks for the feedback ericn!

1. This is a good point, I'll try to make that adjustable (small, medium, large or similar). If the instantaneous readings were made larger in exchange for not showing the statistical information would that work for you?

2. Good point on the FTP test, I'll work on automatically calculating that value. In a 20-minute test your FTP would be 95% of your 20 minute average, in your case 326 (nice job!).

3. I'll add this to the list as well, thanks for the suggestion.

4. More workouts are definitely planned for the future.

5. Metric is also planned.

On the heart rate spikes, one difference between PeriPedal and similar software is PeriPedal records every heart beat (your RR Interval). That means if your heart rate monitor has a bad reading a spike will be shown. The spike is caused by your HRM not PeriPedal. I've actually used this in the past to identify poor heart rate monitor placement and even a heart rate monitor strap that was going bad. The "calculated heart rate" is also displayed, which is the smoothed out heart rate that everyone else displays.

I'll add an option to turn off the RR Interval recording for those who don't want it, but that is what you are seeing. Below is an example of a zoomed in heart rate, showing the calculated heart rate and the instantaneous heart rate.

Thanks again for the feedback!

It doesn't work natively with Macs, but would work fine through Parallels or similar.

Definitely interested in trying this. We have the 1UPUSA trainer - the most recent resistance unit. If you support that there are two of us that would use it my household. Thanks.

1. Definitely just instantaneous is all I am worried about.

2-5 - cool

Heart rate spikes- Makes sense. There was only about 5 of them at most and as long as you know they are expected, then it isnt worth worrying about I say.

6. Of course, a future of online racing against peers is something I am sure everyone would love.

Sorry to hear that. Can you describe what steps cause this issue to occur? Is there any other ANT program running that may be using your ANT stick, like Garmin ANT Agent?
