I did a workout last night and after ending the session. I went back to view the history file. After looking it over for a few minutes, A pop up opened up and said something about the 24 hour trial was over and I should pay for program. It also said something about a lost connection to the server.

Looking forward to try the rest of the workouts.

The only downside with trial / beta licenses is that they periodically check their licenses against the licensing server. They check on start up, then check again every few hours. Last night the license server was down for about 10 minutes for some updates. You must have hit that window when PeriPedal was re-checking, sorry for the inconvenience! That message has a "Try Again" option that should allow you to keep trying the server. I'll increase the interval between re-checking on the next release to try to prevent this.

The pop up in question doesn't mention a 24 hour limit. The text is actually: "A network connection is required for trial licences. Please check your network connection and try again. A network connection is not required for purchased licenses. To purchase a license visit http://www.peripedal.com. If you think you are getting this message in error please email support@peripedal.com"

Let me know if you have any more trouble.

Yup, thats the message I got, but I could swear I read something about a 24 hour period. Hmmm. Could I have read something about that after I click "Try Again" a few times? No need to reply, just talking (typing) out loud.

Try Again just sends it back through the same loop, so it should have been an identical message. Perhaps it was just a really rough workout. ;)

On your website under features, there is a section that refernces cycling efficiency. From the text "Cycling efficiency is typically somewhere between 20 and 26 percent. See where you rank and try to improve it".

I'm not sure what cycling efficiency is calculating and if 26% is better then 20%, or vise versa.

I have been able to try the software for two rides and really enjoy it. Here are some enhancements I would like to see:

  • Data smoothing (2 - 5 second average). Ideally the user could customize the seconds.
  • Screen reformatting: It would be nice if you could organize the dashboard - change order of headers, decrease size of chart, increase the amount of real estate used by the Netflix window, etc.
  • I think the setting screens need some refinement. Not sure if it is a Windows 7 thing but the navigation is not intuitive.

Overall, I like the product. I also appreciate how responsive you have been to the feedback/issues.

Thanks for the feedback songmak!

I will add the data smoothing feature, that has been requested by several users and I think it is a great idea.

On screen reformatting you can't change the order of the headers, but you can change the amount of real estate used by Netflix / Charts. There is a grid divider between the two sections you can click and drag up and down on. Let me know if you have any issues with that or any suggestions on how to make it more visible.

Anything in particular you found difficult on navigation? My goal is to make the UI as simple as possible so if you can identify any problem areas I will try to clean them up.

Thanks!

Transmit Calculated Power – Have a device that can receive an ANT+ power signal? PeriPedal will transmit your calculated power as an ANT+ power device so you can pair it to your device (such as a compatible Garmin watch, etc.). This will allow you to capture all of your data on your device and upload it to your typical sources with your power data.

Can you explain how to do this? I have a Garmin 310xt and would love to be able to collect the power data for uploading.

Hi Burnt Toast,

Sure! This is one of my favorite features. This is done in the "Edit Profiles" section on the "Bikes" tab. Select your bike and find the "Calculated Power Settings" section. In this section right under "Trainer Power Curve" you'll see "Transmit Calculated Power Over Ant+" with a switch below it. If the switch state reads No, click on the switch to change it to Yes. Adjust the "Transmit ANT+ Power Device ID" to a value that is not being used by any other power sensors at your location (default is probably fine). Save the bike profile.

The next time you start a workout your calculated power will be transmitted as an ANT+ power sensor with the device id you assigned to it. Pair your Garmin with the power sensor (refer to Garmin for instruction on how to do that) and you are all set!

Let me know how it goes!

On your previous comment about efficiency, I will add more info to the site about it soon. Briefly, cycling efficiency is how efficient you are at transforming Calories into Watts. The higher the number the better.

I think the general navigation works well (front screen with 4 box options, etc.). The part of the UI that is a little clunky for me are the settings sections. For example, in Edit Profiles, it was not clear to me that there was a Users and Bikes section. The graphics don't jump out at me to indicate these are different sections...based on the color coding used it almost appears as though "Users" is the header name and Bikes is the page name. Now that I know these are actually two different pages/sections, I have not had problems. This same confusion happened for me with the Example Users. I am not sure if it is the coloring or the fact that there are no clear lines/boxes separating the users and tabs, it has taken me some time to understand which section I am in and what user I am modifying.

In the Workout Setup screen, I think it should be more clear that those are drop menus. The colors used makes the down arrow nearly invisible.

In the actual workout screen when you pull up the settings, the setup is a little funky for me. The settings pull up on the right side but there is no save or done option. You just have to click off the screen or hit settings again.

Thanks. Actually the way you have it makes it seem movable but for some reason my cursor was not picking up the divider (I was on the middle of a ride so I am sure my hands were not that steady). I just tried it again and could move it. If anything, maybe you can increase the hover over area that controls the movement of this divider.

I hope this is helpful. In addition, one other feature I would like to see is full screen mode. I can accomplish this by modifying my taskbar option on my system but it would be nice to have a full screen button similar to those found in video sites.

Seems ok, price is right, I do have a few suggestions though.
1. THe heart rate/power/cadence etc readings across the top- would be nice if they were bigger. I cant see them at the best of times, let alone with sweat pouring in my eyes. I keep my laptop on the ground in front of me, far enough away to stay dry. I had to rely and watching my garmin for cadence and heart rate.
2. Calculate the FTP for dummies. I do know that there is an FTP test and that there is an FTP field that needs to be filled in on the profile page. I know I did the 20 FTP test, and now I have a bunch of numbers showing power every 5 minutes. My 20 minute power was 343 watts, does that mean that is my FTP since it was a 20 minute test?
3. Ability to export a tcx file. My 910 somehow lost the workout when trying to upload, I cant upload a csv file into my Endomondo or garmin connect.
4. Back to the dummy thing, the 1 thing that would keep me with the other guys is the different workout plans they have set up. I am not a coach or a cycle guru. I have no idea what tempo, threshold, vo2max, ftp bla bla bla etc etc etc all means, let alone how I should make them into a workout. I just want to follow a calendar.
5. Metric would be nice.

Flaws - The only actual flaw I saw was heart rate spikes here and there. I wanted to see if they were from my strap but of course, my garmin doesnt even register the workout so I cant say if they were software of hardware related.

As for the movie part, not a big draw for me as I have a tv right beside the laptop so didnt try that out.

Overall, would be worth the $40 to me if all the above was implemented.

Hi Eric,

Your 1 & 2 have been taken care of in the latest release v1.2.0. To adjust your HUD font size go to settings from the home screen and change the "HUD Font Size" option from Small to either Medium or Large. Please let me know what you think of that and if you are able to see it or not.

The v1.2.0 update also takes care of several of the other requests made in previous posts.

I tried the software this morning. I have not used anything else to compare it to, but would like to say that I like what I have seen so far. The only thing I would like to see, me being an Aussie, is being able to change from miles to kilometres. Also would be good to have some sort of heads up of the upcoming set, but I will probably pick this up with more use.

Hello, another new user here.

Two things come to mind after a couple session.

1) - metric option for distance and speed
2) - audio alert when entering a new power zone

Once the editable and hopefully sharable workouts are enabled I think the software will be something I would purchase.

Thank you for the feedback! The suggestions from both of you are good and I will be working them into future updates. The Metric feature has been requested several times and will be available in the near future. Thanks!

Hi x-SCOOTER-x,

In the newly released v1.2.5 of PeriPedal I've added an audio alert to notify users of the upcoming interval. It will sound when only a few seconds are remaining in the current interval. I hope this works to give you a heads up about the next interval.

The update also contains other features, the biggest being ANT+ Power Meter support.

Metric is next on my list, so you should be seeing it soon.

Thanks,
Adam

Feel a bit bad for the Trainerroad guys, as it seems like you've lifted their Virtual Power idea. That said, if you can import to Ubuntu and make it integrate with Sufferfest I'd be tempted to move over. Lack of Ubuntu (or Linux) support for Trainerroad is the one and only reason I am stuck with windows on my home laptop.. :-(

Besides, as Adam said, the fact that the TR guys are not the first to do it, you can also do it in your head by memorizing the power at certain speeds. As soon as power curves are published, it's an obvious feature. There's room for multiple training programs, just like there's room for multiple browsers, or video players, or what have you.

Hi Adam,
Just tried your software and I can't get further than the start workout screen (where you have to choose your bike and profile). When I click on ''next'' I got a windows message saying ''PeriPedal just stopped to work''.
I'm on windows 7. What should I do to avoid this problem? Is it because i'm not on windows 8?

thanks
David

Hi David,

Sorry to hear about your trouble. It should work fine on Windows 7, that is my main test machine. I've sent you an e-mail so we can troubleshoot back and forth without clogging up this thread. Thanks for letting me know!

Do you happen to have the data on the non adjustable Nashbar fluid trainer?
I'm saving to buy the KK Road Machine but it would be cool to use this in the meantime with Peripedal or Trainer Road.

I don't have the non-adjustable power curve, but you should be able to get it from Nashbar product support. That's where I got the adjustable curve from. I sent them an email and they emailed it to me within a couple of hours.

Adam, about the audio alert - can you please think about some logic to prevent them from happening frequently with short intervals? Thinking of the turns in "The Long Scream", specifically, where one beep at the start would be adequate. Probably a difficult thing to get right, but it made TLS rather annoying.
