Weight Loss Phenomenon....
I don't get it! Everything was going so well!

Since 12/1/06 I've gone from about 190 lbs, 18% bf to Monday's weigh in at 175 lbs, 8.5% bf.

Now this week my weight is coming back on!! UGH!

The only changes to my current food/training plan are:

Added 2 days of multiple homemade no-bake cookies from my mom
Added a HUGE dinner last night of homemade lasagna
Added servings of homemade warm apple crisp with ice cream last night

Reduced training volume to almost nothing yesterday and today to spend time with the parents while they are in town

What's going on?! How could I possibly be gaining weight!

I love my parents and all, and I know parents in general have caused plenty of mental health related issues to us when growing up, but are they supposed to cause physical health issues!

Oh well, only get to see them a few times per year and they'll be gone tomorrow....I can get back on schedule then.....

I just booked a trip home for Easter weekend. That means New York pizza for dinner Friday night. Probably 3 New York bagels for breakfast Saturday morning, lots of snacking during the day, big homemade dinner Saturday night and about a half dozen of my favorite local beers and brunch on Sunday!!!

I lose the weight when I get back home :-)

Congratulations on your winter fitness.

Probably lots of salt leading to a bit of water retention. I wouldn't worry about it. The healthy lifestyle isn't worth it if it doesn't allow an occasional splurge.

When the parents leave, get back to the usual regimen and you'll be fine.

As a parent who has 'aced' parenting school (all three of our kids are in their twenties), let me point out that it is every parent's sworn duty to overfeed the kids. It is also the duty of every child to eat, no questions asked, all good-tasting sweets foisted upon them.

My youngest son recently came home for a long weekend with his girlfriend. He and I are both training, both losing weight, both eating sensibly. UNTIL he gets home - and I managed to use more granulated sugar/brown sugar/molasses in one weekend of cooking than I have in a six month period. Not to mention taking them out to a great new restaurant with a spectacular wine list, incredible dessert menu, etc.

They left a few pounds heavier - I managed to gain only one pound for that overindulgence - and we've both returned to our disciplined diets, satisfied in the knowledge that I fulfilled my parental duty in overfeeding him, and he fulfilled his filial responsibility in eating just about everything that came his way!

I rejoice in the knowledge that ours is not the only house in the US to observe this worthy tradition.

No worries, my parents also subscribe to that method of thinking. When I told my mom that I thought that I actually gained weight at training camp, she said- "that's great!, isn't it?"

This is after at least 3 conversations this month about how hard extra weight is on marathon running.

*sigh*

I guess I should just realize that it's her job to want me pleasantly plump...

I have no problems fulfilling my duty....I may be biased, but my mom may be the best cook on the planet.

Either way, I got a decent bike ride in this AM....I'll swim a bit tonight...then they're gone tomorrow afternoon and back to the norm!

What's going on?! How could I possibly be gaining weight!

I've found that sometimes a weekend like that will result in water weight gain, particularly if I gain a couple pounds in a couple days. Last weekend, I ate everything in sight, including a ton of pasta with tomato sauce and cheese. The scale went up four pounds. Monday and Tuesday, I went back "on program." This morning, the four pounds were gone.

Which is just a myth, one kcal in the evening doesn't make a kilogram of pure water any hotter than 1 degree of Celsius, neither it does if it is eaten in the morning.

on the contrary - the OP's weight gain doesn't stem from an excess of calories, but rather from Caloric Meal iMbalance (CMM). Had he had a more appropriate breakfast - pancakes with sausage, say, including lots of butter and syrup - it would have jump-started his metabolism for that day; his body would have started burning the calories early. Instead, his 'sensible' breakfast sent a message to his system to expect sensible meals for the rest of the day.

Trust me, I'm an expert on this sort of stuff.

I haven't seen a single scientific evidence that concludes the existance of these sort of reactions in the body. If you have please point them out to me. His weight gain is either water or due to excess calories. He never mentioned the size of those meals and from what I have seen, most people underestimate how much they eat.
Since when pancake with suasage is an appropriate food ?

I guess that CMM has a long way to go to defeat the skeptics - those who question its existence, those who find anecdotal evidence unworthy, those who don't understand why the third letter is "M". But surely, in time, all will become clear.

meanwhile, I'm wondering about those no-bake cookies. how are they cookies, if you don't bake them?
