As an example, the guy who finished 4th in the US Olympic trials for the marathon did a 2:12. You don't think someone like that could use the $$?

If I were him, I'd be on the horn right now with Tyler Hamilton and would then start at the top of the list of distance swimmers at the 2004 trials and start working backwards.

well, it sure looks pretty hard...very hard actually...
but with $100,000 at the end it's sort of expected, isn't it?

how about the reigning top3 5km open water swimmers in the world right now? Thomas Lurz from germany does 5k in 51... so does chip peterson from the US and Simone Ercoli from Italy. That would be one hell of a mens start...
Larsen jensen, or grant hacket, both 14:40's for their 1500's, same with david davies... I would fly down and watch that race if those 6 swimmers race it.

Why do you need pro's???

...I would get Erik Clark to swim, BottomFeeder to bike, and the Monk to run. I think they would go sub 7:30 personally with my guidance. There would have to be "appearance fee's" with Monk for him to even show..

will Monk have his "special" socks on?

The top pros would be way below 8hrs...

Just look at what chicken legs Rasmussen did last year in that solo breakaway win in the Tour.
4h30 for a top rider. faster for a super rider
A top marathon runner would run a 2h12' on this kind of course.
That leaves a lot of margin for the swimmer.
I'd expect a top team to go below 7h30.

his "Holy socks"? The ones he wears on Sundays that have big holes in them and give him huge blisters? Do we still have that picture of Monk's blisters from his last Ironman?

well...I just looked at the profile...indeed...I need to revise my statement...
it would take a team of specialists to go under 8hrs.

Maybe Mark and Olaf can do it, but with Bjorn, not with me.

Wow, that could be exciting! I think the best part is that only ONE team can get the $100K. Imagine if four or five "superteams" show up to fight it out. Holy cow!

Hopefully, they will keep us posted on any superteams that register. The hype for this could be similar to the superbowl (for triathletes). It would certainly get a lot of discussion going on these forums.

Thanks for the info.

I guess checking the bike course for real would help a lot.
It's 3000m of + climbing. That's a LOT.

From what I have heard, no one can go 4:30 on that course. It's like 20-30 min. slower/tougher than, say, IM Canada.

if a really fast biker (say Bjorn) can go 4h50 it is doable.

Uh...I'm sure a quality pro cyclist could go 4:30 on that course especially considering they don't have to worry about running afterward.
