Wanna make $100,000
Ok, just received an email from the RD at Silverman that if your relay team goes under 8 hours for the race, the first team to do it wins $100,000.

That's super cool!!! Not that I would have a chance at that but I would think some guys could come up with a team that could accomplish this?

This should be easy of 3 pros. The payout is better than IMNA offers if they split it.

That's my thoughts as well. I woudl think all you would need is a small powerful cyclist to conquer the hills and you could easily do it.
I would love to see that done. ALthough I won't see it since I will likely be WAY back. ;)

50' and 2h30' marathon is do-able for some. so that leaves 4h40 for the bike course....

If it is really that hard, forget it, or you should have a 2h15' marathon dude at the start.

I wonder if they give the runner a "special hydration" mix if they look to be on pace. Maybe some ipecac and raw chicken?

I would guess the trick here is not to go sub 8 but to be the fastest team. I would be surprised if any triathletes are on the team that wins.

10,000 ft of climbing and 1,000 ft of net gain.

Sub 8:00 will be harder than you guys think, but it's doable.

Oh yeah, 2800ft of climbing on the marathon as well.

Why? There are many ex-Olympic caliber swimmers/triathletes around, so that part is "easy".

Somebody with Bjorn in their name (or comparable) could do the bike.

I'd imagine that any Pro would could go sub-3 on an IM mary could probably do 2:30 or possibly faster as a stand-alone.

Granted, none of these would be quite as fast as the current world champs/top pros in the 3 separate disciplines, but plenty fast enough to get the job done.

And unlike for the pros in the single sports, the tri pros could REALLY use the extra $33,000.

As an example, the guy who finished 4th in the US Olympic trials for the marathon did a 2:12. You don't think someone like that could use the $$?

If I were him, I'd be on the horn right now with Tyler Hamilton and would then start at the top of the list of distance swimmers at the 2004 trials and start working backwards.

The top pros would be way below 8hrs...

Just look at what chicken legs Rasmussen did last year in that solo breakaway win in the Tour.
4h30 for a top rider. faster for a super rider
A top marathon runner would run a 2h12' on this kind of course.
That leaves a lot of margin for the swimmer.
I'd expect a top team to go below 7h30.

Wow, that could be exciting! I think the best part is that only ONE team can get the $100K. Imagine if four or five "superteams" show up to fight it out. Holy cow!

Hopefully, they will keep us posted on any superteams that register. The hype for this could be similar to the superbowl (for triathletes). It would certainly get a lot of discussion going on these forums.

Thanks for the info.

Pfff. $100K divided by 3 = $33K. After tax in states like CA, that's like $18K left. I wouldn't expect all that many super-teams to show, especially if a lot of teams THINK others will show.

That said, I'd love to see it. But make the prize $500K to liven it up a bit!

I might be wrong in my thinking, but really, could a pro rider do this solo. I would think that they may really much on the peloton draft to maintain an average speed necessary for this distance. I don't think they'd (or at least the average pro rider) TT very well for this distance.

After reading all the chit chat going back and forward, I just wanted to let you know that if you hear someone needing a swimmer let him/her know I am available for the challenge. I raced the full Nevada Triathlon last year, got out first after the swim (together with Dave Scott), with an official time of 51:19, I could certainly chop off a few minutes (3 or 4 at least) knowing that I don't have to go for the rest of the triathlon. I am not a pro (my profession feeds me and certainly feeds my hobbies) but I have been swimming for 27 years (last 10 years as open water swimmer) and I would love to go there, be part of an elite relay and have lots of fun.

I think if some big name teams got together to try it, it would raise awareness for the race. It would probably also increase entries. By doing both of those things, they may be able to land some more sponsors. Then they can give a good prize purse to the pros. If any non M-dot has a chance to survive it might be this one. Look at it this way 100K to the top pro that turns in a comparable slow time on a tough course. OR a team of, likely fairly known, "specialist" that will likely turn in a time faster than any possible time on any other course by a single athlete.

You have the name recognition and a "promotable" time that will turn ALOT of eyes to this race. This is the type of thing that will put a race like Silverman on the map. Considering that IMNA races don't even allow relays this is something they can't do.

It can only be a good thing for the sport and better for the amatuer athletes, IMO.

I just spoke to Bjorn and though there are quite a few questionmarks and the race is at the end of the year, he was all for the idea. as I said though, there are issues to be solved but the concept rocks!!

Norsemans bikecourse is probably tougher (and colder!)and he rode 5.20 in a triathlon and that was with 10 k extra added to the course due to change of T2. So, maybe a 4.40-45 for a flat-out ride is possible here, a 45ish swim if I can be in top shape (I was the Swedish Openwater Champ in '05) and hammer it out and Clas could certanly run a 2.30. With that said, I'm sure someone gives Tyler Hamilton a call and finds an eager kenyan to run....

However, this is great for the sport and great for the Silverman in putting their race on the map...

For a Kenyan, $33,000 isn't peanuts (unless you're paul tergat and get 1 million just to run in London)...so there would likely be a 2h15 runner.
then he can easily find a 4h45 rider and a 43-44 swimmer
