1. Real food.
You can argue that heavy training stress means athletes need more vitamins and minerals. I would argue back that athletes who are truly training hard need to eat more high quality food. If you want fish oil, eat fish.

Costco fish oil and a generic Target multi vitamin.
I'm hedging my bets - I take some but only cheap ones.

Beer, Wine, Coffee, Sleep... No supps or vitamins for me. That industry blows my mind though. People spend a lot of money on them though...
^This, But really it should be food first, and if you have the time and your body is in good health you shouldn't need a supplement. Supplements SUPPLEMENT, they are not food/meal replacers that people make them out to be, but they do have/serve a purpose. No end all be all supplement exists that should be taken by every single triathlete. But, every triathlete should be in tune with their body, know what they need, what they lack, and how they can correct that, by either changing their eating habits, or find a suitable supplement. Feel free to consult your doc, get blood work, etc.
If you are going to take a supplement though, be careful and know what you are taking, how much, and how much your body needs. many people over supplement themselves and in turn block other vitamins/minerals from being absorbed into the body. Just today I was working with a client who is taking a zinc supplement. She complained with several symptoms associated with low iron levels. Ironically taking in too much zinc is known to block the absorption of iron. I feel this is more common then many think.
Educate yourselves other then reading a label, the FDA doesn't approve supplements so do your own research first!

I take a Vitamin D supplement for the lack of sunlight up here in the NE. As well as Vit C and Vit B Complex. Avoided the cold this winter when everyone else got it at work. Was it the vitamins? Maybe

Me:
Vit C
Glucosamine/Chondroitin (evidence unclear but I've been using it and running for 26 years with healthy and happy joints; not about to change something that works)
B Complex vitamin
Powdered Greens
Caffeine (Sh--loads)
Not a "supplement," but I use probiotics as I seem to have a high susceptibility to GI infection.
