To be fair, I agree with what you wrote...it does appear that the gaps are pretty big.

Just checked Madonna Buder...she came out of the water in 1:48...79 years young, and only 29 minutes slower than my swim at IM Wisconsin...damn! That is awesome, as was Rudy's swim.

I think Graves thought he was going to be able to easily break away. If he's holding back then he could potentially really separate after Havi, if he's near his limit already, they might mow him down in the next 20 miles.

I hope he has more gas in the tank and guns it for a while...it would really change the strategy of the pack behind. Where's Macca?
If they close on him, I think he's cooked. I don't think you can gun it, get caught, and then gun again. Honestly, I think it was just way too much too early.

As soon as I saw 1) reports that he will ride 4:14 and 2) he is NOT riding with a powermeter, my belief in his chances for success went WAY down.

There are a TON of great riders that have done this race. For Graves to imply the times were as soft as he did, I just don't think that was reasonable.

On another note, Chrissie is smashing the field.

I wonder how much of the heat was factored into his projections. It must be well over 100 on the road.

>> Where is Macca?

Anyone came back from the pier and know anything? It seemed like an uncharacteristically slow swim.

(Did he get a mechanical? ;-0)

Otherwise, Henning didn't seem to be impaired by his injury. Good for him.

Call me a dick....if that guy had "Trained Hard" - he would not have been beaten by a 70 year old Nun out of the water.

I don't understand how a person can qualify for the world championships and yet not make it out of the water under the cutoff...

I don't get how these guys qualify if they can't make a 2:20 swim cutoff? I mean I am no fast swimmer but 2:20?

You're a dick :) Seriously though, we have no idea about that guy's history. He may have won the lottery and lost 80 lbs training as hard as he could. I hate to see people miss cutoffs.

Even lottery winners have to complete at least a 70.3.

Yes, I think it's a lot of lottery folks. And there's also a big difference in the smaller races - WITH WETSUIT SWIMS - and ocean swimming without a wetsuit.

I also think a ton of people come into this race WAY overtrained.

Seems like the men's favorites are happy to let Graves dangle off the front by 1:20...I wonder if he's gonna make a move after Hawi...

Yeah, but the swim on a 70.3 is not much different from an OLY.
