Greetings, this is my first post on s.t. but I've been reading for awhile. My problem is I'm a pretty terrible swimmer and need advice badly. First of all a little background information. I'm 19 years old, and have always been a competitive cyclist and runner, and have started to do triathlons on a regular basis this summer. What happens in the typical triathlon for me is I loose mega time in the swim and then play catch-up for the rest of the race. For example, in a triathlon this spring I came out of the water in 65th place overall and ended up in 7th place overall. Then 2 weekends ago I would have won the half ironman I was competing in had I not lost 6 minutes to the winner in the swim (he beat me by 4 minutes overall). I ended up second.
What I need is advise on swimming technique. I've heard many things such as hand goes in at the head, rotate the body, is this right? How often do you breath? (I've always breathed every 3 strokes) How often do you look ahead? Advice on these kind of things would be very helpful. Also what are the best swim training/technique technique books available?
In general, I'm sick and tired of playing catch-up the whole race, and think I can start winning these things if I don't loose 5 minutes in the swim. I train a lot, and believe I have the potential to become a better swimmer. Please Advise Me!
