At Galveston 70.3 last year, the M55-59 was combined with the M25-29 and was the first wave after the pros. My first time being in the first wave and I beat all those younger guns - 1st AGer out of the water! A rare and memorable moment.
I won't be at Oceanside, but looking forward to the results. Should be some great competition between Steven Chavez, Jon Brown and Kim McDonald and a few others in the 55-59 group.

They like to change it up every year. Last year my wave, men 35-39, was dead last.

Yeah Steve, Some fast guys in that group. I age up this year to 60-64 but there are some fast guys up here too.

M30-34 were first last year, I believe they flip the M30-34 & the M35-39 first to last every other year.

I wish we were all starting in the same wave instead of with the 50-54 guys. That would be more a little more fun.

i think we will be able to have our stuff on the bike, out of the bag but just not on the ground. the only thing is if you don't go the shoes clipped into the pedals route they would be in the bag. but helmet, sunglasses etc, can be on the bike.

any idea why they would put the 30-34 old age group in the last swim wave? I hate to think how it going to be standing around for an hour to swim, watching 1/2 the field get out of the water and out on to their bikes before we even touch the water.

I'm in 2d to 3d to last, like last year. As bad as the wait is, it's worse that they walk around telling everyone to get out of transition at 6:30, over an hour before getting wet. As I recall we stayed in t1 for quite some time after 6:30

At least the line for the ports potty is short.

This will be first half and I'm kind of scared now that I'm starting second to last since I tend to freak out on the swim and I don't like waiting to start. Every other race I've done, I was in the first or second group so this is a big change.

i think you will be fine. there wont be almost anyone behind you to make you feel rushed. the most important thing is to get acclimated to the cold water. you have to swim form where you get into the water to where the start line is. you will have a good amount of time to get comfortable. the water is very clear so that will help with the anxiety. just start near the back and off to one side to avoid the washing machine. Just relax and know you trained and are ready to race.

Do you know how to swim? (that should be yes) Will you be wearing a suit made completely out of neoprene that will make you positively buoyant? (that should also be yes)

I don't see what there is to be anxious about as opposed to any other swim.

Yes, like you said, the answer to both of those questions are a yes.

I just get anxious before a race and am pretty nervous about a race until I am physically there and the gun goes off no matter what the size of the race, this one just happens to be the biggest I have ever done.

Yes, there is plenty of time to get acclimated to the water, less than 3 minutes because that's how much time between waves. Swimming can be anxious time. Relax, focus on your form, and stay on the outside for this race, closer to the edge. When I've started there and held that line, nobody really bothers you.

Yup, Off to the right near the boats and you have some clean water. Of course, if you have any speed at all in the water it will be a slalom course

My first year there was my first HIM, and I was in wave 3 or 4. Good swimmer but mediocre at everything else so got passed all day long. Last year started 21 of 24 or something. Much more fun passing than being passed (just slightly less mediocre than I was), plus you get a legal draft slingshot effect going on

Who needs a port-a-potty? I fully intend not to pee on Saturday until I put my wetsuit on...

I don't mind being in the last waves at all. I will be right there with you in Oceanside in one of those last waves, and I look at it as an opportunity to kick ass and pass people all day long.

Gets windy the later you go though :)

But I agree... lot of "legal" drafting opportunities.

I hope you don't intend on holding your number 2 until then. I, for one, like to make sure I'm as empty as possible before race start.

I won't jinx with the R word... but forecasts looking a bit spitty. If it is this bag thing might be a blessing in disguise. At least start the run with dry shoes :)

Where's Jay with the annual weather thread???

Ask and ye shall receive!
8-day in advance forecasts aren't worth beans, but at this point, the latest from the NWS:

Models are also indicating another weekend storm for the end of the month. We shall see.

Again, way too early to be accurate. Water temp here in San Clemente is 58 as of right now (was 55 just this morning!). Another storm coming Sunday, so we'll
see how long the wind blows from the NW after this storm. That could drop the water temp again!

Yeah I did not want to use the R word but I did see the long range forecast.
I'm taking a group down on Sunday to preview the first part of the bike course....and I know it's going to rain but they want to go anyway.
Let's hope the wind stays down.

Bob, go early. Rain "should" hold off until lunchtime tomorrow. I'm headed out in about an hour from here to Las Pulgas and back- around 45 miles for me today. Have a safe ride tomorrow.

I'm signed up for the race, but decided to do Leadman 125 in Vegas instead. 10:12 a/m swim start, 79 degrees and sun, and only 20 minutes from my house. Brilliant.

If I had the choice I might have done Leadman 125 instead, but it wasn't an option at the time of sign ups. I drove the Leadman bike course two days ago, beautiful and challenging. Good luck.
Oceanside is a great course too and will have fun there.

I've done Oceanside several times and love the venue, but I was fortunate enough to get a great discount on the entry, and not having to pay for gas and hotel made it a no-brainer. Enjoy Oceanside and best of luck to you!!!

I run/ride Stuart Mesa a few times a week. Watch yourselves on Stuart Mesa going through the southern end of Las Flores, the road construction zone is pretty gnarly. I can see water bottles being launched like artillary there.
