Coming from somebody that doesn't drink at all: what is the lure of drinking alcohol?

Do you like the taste? How you feel? Is is social?

Personally I can't stand the alcohol taste even in champagne and I know that's mild.

I just don't understand how somebody gets past the taste. Please enlighten me.

The rest of us have tastebuds that appreciate alcohol, and our minds are triggered by various environmental inputs to want to consume it. |

And champagne isn't mild, it's typically 12-14%.

I'll bite, even though it wasn't to me. I have over a decade of sobriety and that was something I needed. I cherish my sobriety. My consumption was problematic leaving university and I never even liked the taste of alcohol. It didn't make me social, it made me isolated. It didn't make me even feel good; it made me not feel, which was what I was going for at the time. It became frightening to realize I was regularly consuming something that had no positive benefit to me. Once I realized those things, stopping became my priority so I could address the things I was trying to escape.

RHR went down, I got far fitter than even. Sleep got better. My emotions became more stable. My life got so much better. I know most people in this thread likely aren't here for the same reasons I am, but there isn't a good thing I could say about alcohol if I tried (for me). I occasionally get a reminder of what the taste might be like when I use hand sanitizer. It makes me want to vomit to think about.

Relieves anxiety, makes socializing easier. Decreases social anxiety.

But, usually increases anxiety when sobering up.

Try White Claw Black Cherry on ice. They taste pretty good, or don’t as they are dangerously tasty.

Yes.

It must be for most people and not for me. I have a lot of friends that drink, I don't think it's evil or anything.

I used to go out with them regularly, be the designated driver and enjoyed it. Everyone had fun, normally I got the girls.

When I was in the Marines, I used to be the designated marcher for the section, everyone got back to base safe. That was so much fun, crazy times overseas.

Still hanging in there on day 10! No more craving for sugars, plus I also drastically cut back on caffeine, and I'm sleeping much better. My weight has finally begun to drop. At this point I think I can get well in February, maybe even the end of March.

DOUBLE DIGITS IS A BIG DEAL! Wooo!!!

We are more than 30% of the way through January. This is where some of us have mentioned “settling in”, just like we do in the first third of the run in a long course race.

Today just about damn near killed me though.
- tough convo with Q1 coach that kind of wrung out my emotions
- my angel baby kelpie dog got loose during my morning meetings and my life flashed before my eyes. She took herself on a walk and made it back to the front door while the search party was out.
- 2 long slogging drives through rush hour traffic
- miserably hangry by the time I could settle in for the night.

I stayed strong. But man there was not enough bourbon to compensate for this day. That’s kind of how you know you’re a tough one for making it through.

Onward

In the spirit of the day (The Solemnity of David Bowie)

Yes, Bowie enjoyed his wine; I'm not certain about Byrne's position, but he WAS born in Scotland

Still, I think it's a beautiful cover --- from what I know, the singers were just told "come here & sing, if you want to; we'll give you the music when you get here"

I'm pretty much a "make it up as I go along" kinda guy - one could say (and some have) that my life is just one "very long" improv comedy skit

I'm cool with that

Glad your doggo made it home safe. I hate that, and they always look like they had soooo much fun!

Its the only thing I get true anxiety about... Just the thought of them escaping. Probably relates back to an incident in my childhood.

Day 10, done.

Oh ok - what is your favorite surf break? I’ve surfed Hossegor, France, Lakey Peak Indonesia, SoCal, South East, Bell’s Beach Australia, and Jeffrey’s Bay South Africa. Good times.

Day eleven is in the books! Woohoo!

Another brutal day and I have a ripping headache. I haven’t felt like I’ve wanted the earth to swallow me whole in a while but felt pretty close to that with stuff that transpired today.

At thanksgiving a friend gave me a bottle of Navarro NA Gewurtztraminer and it went perfectly with my Thai green curry I had for dinner tonight.

Onward.
