For my 20th run of this challenge I thought I would do a 20 km run, take photos and post them to this thread. As it turned out the battery of my iPhone died 8 km into my run so I ran home, recharged, waited an hour and went out for a second run. As a bonus, I got to claim credit for two runs! Here is the visual record of today's runs in Ottawa:
I always look like a bank robber heading out for runs in the winter:
But if the thermometer reads -17.3 degrees like today, I don't care what I look like, I just want to stay warm.
One block from my house is the Rideau Canal. In a couple of weeks we'll be skating on its frozen surface.
For now, workers are pumping water on the snowy surface. Once the water freezes they will bring out a massive zamboni to smooth the surface. Slogging through calf-deep slush in -17 degree weather does not look fun. i give a huge tip of my chapeau to these guys.
Heading downtown I ran past the Chateau Laurier Hotel, one of the nicest in the city:
Then along Sussex Drive past the US embassy:
The "Maman" statue outside of the National Gallery is always an attention-getter:
Then I ran across the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Quebec. No matter what the weather, I always see someone on a bike during my runs. This guy must have had a cold ride today:
The curvy contours of the Museum of Canadian History are on the Quebec side of the river, with Ottawa's Parliament Buildings in the background.
Then across another bridge back to Ottawa and up to Parliament Hill. "The Hill" is a great place to run on winter, as its sidewalks and roads are cleared as soon as it snows.
The Centennial Flame was lit on Jan. 1, 1967 and has been burning ever since. It throws out enough heat to warm a runner/photographer's fingers on a cold winter day!
The Parliamentary Library at the back of the hill has always been my favourite building on The Hill. Need to work on my framing for self-portraits!
A quick stop at the nearby War Memorial, then it was time to head home.
Two runs, 21 km, 1 hr 43 min. Despite the low temperature I never felt too cold, except for my hands while taking photos.
Hope you enjoyed the photos.
