Help requested for Di2 front derailleur issue (refusing to shift)
I have a 5-year old set-up that has worked smoothly until ~2 weeks ago. Running a 6870 FD with 6870 RD, and using DN110 battery and 9150 shifters. Until ~2 weeks ago, I hadn't updated the firmware for three years.

Trouble was that the FD refuses to shift both up and down in the middle of the cassette range, this despite of a fully charged battery. I'd click a shift button, and there would be no response at all. If I then hold down the button, I get a solid green light. But for whatever reason, if I want to shift to the big ring, with the chain originally in the middle of the cassette, shifting the rear to the 13T cog followed by a click on the shifter will shift the FD. I experience a similar issue when trying to shift down the FD, and it works only when I shift the chain to the 21T cog.

What's weirder is that this never happened before, and to rule out things, I updated the firmware a week ago. For one week, the issue went away completely, but it has since returned yet again.

Anyone knows what the issue might be? Many thanks in advance.

You want manual shift mode then press and hold the button on your junction box for 5 seconds until a green and red lit for two seconds.

Crash mode maybe?
With the bike in the stand press and hold the button on your junction box for 5 seconds until a red light flashes. Then starts rotating the cranks to allow the system to cycle through the gears.

My other recommendation is make sure the system isn’t bricked. Which it sounds like it’s not.
Connect it back to the E-tube app and then make sure all components are recognized under the maintenance tab. If so the make sure you disconnect the system thru the E-TUBE app.

Last option I would try is disconnect the battery from the system and connect that only to the Juntion-A port and charge it to see if you’re getting an error on the charger that isn’t showing up while the whole system is connected.

You can always double check your settings in the E-TUBE app, I personally hate semi and full synchronize shifting and do everything manual, fast mode.

Connect the E-Tube app and go to the maintenance section. Select the option to adjust the front der. It will walk you through testing it on both the front rings. If that works then you know the FD is working properly and you have some other problem.

Just wanted to follow up that it was a silly error: somehow the e-tube wire worked its way loose, this despite being the set-up on my trainer bike. I didn't even realize that a halfway seated cable is enough to allow shifting, but there we have it. No idea how it worked its way loose either.

It's been working fine since I plugged it back in firmly.

If the FD has got some age, and perhaps has been in some inclement weather (wet, dirt/dust, salty rain) the pivots could just sticking, corrode, etc.. I've lubed some of the pivots on one of my Di2 bikes to make sure those are good, but eventually had to retire a FD, even after servicing as the servo motor was just smoked.

In short, it could just be a "it's worn out" thing. Nothing last forever, especially when it's working hard for years.
