Marathon Des Sables has always intrigued me from a gnarly standpoint... Very unlikely it is something I will ever do, but is seems pretty awesome. I think I like cycling too much to become an ultra runner...

Seen this on TV a couple of times and strikes me it's a daily long walk in the desert for most. And your feet get chewed up.

I'm heading to the RAAM start line in ~ 2 months - but as crew chief.

My buddy is a solo rider and we tackled it the same way 5 years ago and got an AG win - it is an amazing experience, that we're looking forward to again.

I also highly recommend La Ruta - wonderful experience and a great country to explore

" I take my gear out of my car and put my bike together. Tourists and locals are watching from sidewalk cafes. Non-racers. The emptiness of of their lives shocks me. "

List some of the gnarliest, most enjoyable, "must-do" bucket list events you have done/are aware that exist.

I love triathlon, but I totally wouldn't mind branching out to pure running, cycling, swimming, adventure racing, etc.

For instance, Dirty Kanza looks like something that would be pretty awesome to do at least one.

Check out the Hyner 50K Trail challenge
It is a complete kick in the nuts from the word go but the party afterwards makes it completely worth it

I'd also like to bike across the United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic, though not as a race - and getting 8 hours or so of sleep each night.
