The tempo run was not.

It depends on your fitness. I'll contend that it ranks pretty high for two categories:

1) top 5% runners

2) people who are short on training time.

Otherwise, I agree.

thanks..this wil be my 6th --last HIM was way back in 2000 and always faltered in the run( i always overdid the bike back then). this will be my 1st HIM wherein i dont have enough time to do 4-5 swims and bikes. i have tried the medium long run the day before my long ride for my OLY prep and will try it this time for the half.

when do you normally do your long run if you do a semi-long run the day before your long ride -- i would assume that you do this during the weekends..

How important is the tempo run *compared to your highest priority workouts of the week*?

As you hinted at in the rest of your post, I think that it depends on your priorities, strengths and expectations. For me, the tempo run, however you defined it was a key and staple run work out for much of the year.

Barry,
Great advice. I have read a bunch of your post and think that you are spot on nearly all of the time. I am a runner and come from a running back ground. People always ask me how to get faster running. I have always said run more often, 4-6 days a week, get a long run and finally one tempo run. It is a very simple formula to getting faster on the run. People, especially triathletes like to over analysis there training and workouts. This simple formula will make the slowest triathlete faster and most fast triathletes faster.

One other thing to think about is that most people tend to do there easy runs to hard and there hard runs to easy.
