It's possible to make most things safer. But I've yet to see any real evidence that disc rotors cause any more injuries than any other part of the bike. Chainrings aren't covered and I've seen plenty of injury from those, even had them myself.

Agreed on chainrings. They do make chainguards to guard against rocks and such, but do a decent job in protecting you as well.

So let's assume she got this from the disc rotor, that her knee went into the rear wheel of the rider infant of her. I wonder what her knee would have looked like if she had gone into the rear spokes/dropout/QR of a rim brake bike? Bikes have so many sharp and hard edges that can split a knee open.

I think that anyone trying to make a point about disc brakes from this gets an eye-roll from me.

JFC cycling is so full of petty jealousies and pointless conflict. I really don't understand why people get so hot under the collar about bike tech. I mean, just read the comments sections on Bikerumor, Cyclingnews or Road.cc and they are full of people with nothing else to do but shit on every single new product.

A long time ago I got tired of justifying bike purchases to naysayers and luddites. I don’t care for some pedantic codex that lists how bikes should look and what I should wear while riding them. No sport is as hopelessly in love with its past nor as indifferent to its future as cycling. If I was a triathlete I'd buy an Diamondback Andean as the ultimate fuck-you to all the bike snobs out there.

I'd imagine that a cover like one used on MX motorcycles might work. Pretty light weight.
Yet, to a weight wennie, it is more weight.

I'd go with the incidence of rotor injury is relatively low, in every discipline.


MTB has used discs for 15+ years and there has been no call there for rounded discs, covered discs or no discs.

Type of crash may differ, but I still think it is a relative nonstarter.

That being said, still sucks for those 1 in a 1000 or so like Katie F'n Compton.

And to those saying "just cover them"...the hard part for road bikes is doing that but not causing problems with overheating on descents...or, just adding additional aero drag. Not to mention even MORE mass added to an ~ 1lb difference vs a rim brake system.

well I only give my Tom A. response to silly things like "let's cover discs". I for one don't have an issue with disc brakes anywhere, especially cyclocross.

My disc brake QR tri bike arrives Tuesday (finally!). While my goal with it is not giving the world a FU, I eschew non-data based arguments and anecdotes are not facts. If someone presents anecdotes, they are telling you the bigger picture trend is against them.

Or perhaps too early, since we're still having this conversation. If data had been collected when I first made that observation we'd have had a couple of years of data to examine. That is, if there were some way to collect real evidence, but of course there isn't.
