Pew Research: 39% of Christians take bible literally.

" While about four-in-ten Christians (39%) say the Bible’s text is the word of God and should be taken literally...."

A concerning statistic.

How did they define "literally"? I know that sounds silly in one way, but when the definition of "god" is so widespread in Christendom the definition of literally should carry weight with such a poll. Honestly, there's one named god in Christianity, but in actual Christian practice the reality is that many Christians aren't even really referring to the same thing when they say they believe in God. That's an entirely different subject, but a way of saying that these sorts of polls are probably more opaque than clarifying on the subject.

Well, among other things, seems to be a lot of death penalty punishments in the bible for behaviours that are acceptable today.

Depending on your trigger words, Leviticus 24:16 is your go-ahead.

Depending on your trigger words, Leviticus 24:16 is your go-ahead.

udud (Arabic: حدود Ḥudūd, also transliterated hadud, hudood; singular hadd, حد, literal meaning "limit", or "restriction") is an Islamic concept: punishments which under Islamic law (Shariah) are mandated and fixed by God. The Shariah divided offenses into those against God and those against man. Crimes against God violated His Hudud, or 'boundaries'. These punishments were specified by the Quran, and in some instances by the Sunnah.[1][2][3] They are namely for adultery, fornication, accusing someone of illicit sex but failing to present four eyewitnesses,[4][5] apostasy (opinion is not unanimous on this crime.[6]), consuming intoxicants, outrage (e.g. rebellion against the lawful Caliph, other forms of mischief against the Muslim state, or highway robbery), robbery and theft.[7][8] Hudud offenses are overturned by the slightest of doubts (shubuhat).[9] These punishments were rarely applied in pre-modern Islam.[10]
These punishments range from public lashing to publicly stoning to death, amputation of hands and crucifixion.[11] The crimes against hudud cannot be pardoned by the victim or by the state, and the punishments must be carried out in public.[12] However, the evidentiary standards for these punishments were often impossibly high, and they were thus infrequently implemented in practice. Moreover, the Islamic prophet Muhammad ordered Muslim judges to 'ward off the Hudud by ambiguities.' The severe Hudud punishments were meant to convey the gravity of those offenses against God and to deter, not to be carried out. If a thief refused to confess, or if a confessed adulterer retracted his confession, the Hudud punishments would be waived.[3][9]
In most Muslim nations in modern times public stoning and execution are relatively uncommon[citation needed], although they are practised in Muslim nations that follow a strict interpretation of sharia, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran.[13][14]

Im sure you see the difference.

One question. During the global flood, did god kill all the ducks or did all the ducks survive?
I really wonder since ducks are floating and cannot drown.

U.S. history books also talk about the time this country endorsed slavery as a legal practice and defining non-Caucasians as being legally worth less than a Caucasian.

Just because the Bible talks about what was at one time doesn't make those practices any more acceptable today than slavery is in our country today. Your understanding of the Jesus of Christianity is simplistic if you think that just because ancient, bronze age people thought of what they identified as God at one time is what Jesus was talking about. There's a reason Jesus paid homage and respected certain parts of his heritage and tradition while burning other parts of his heritage -- or other parts of the belief system common in that day -- up in smoke.

Well, that and...people float, but can drown. Not sure what makes him think a duck can't drown.

You take what everyone else here has already said, and then you throw in the fact that literally doesn't even mean literally any more, and I guess you've got a pretty useless research poll.
