I participated in 70.3 Miami yesterday and a few miles out of T1, I got passed by 2 men. Right after they passed and were a few bike lengths ahead of me, a car ran through the intersection and hit one of the men straight on from the side. The other man was able to swerve out of the way. We were all told to keep going.
What frustrates me is that the police officer was just standing in the middle of the intersection with his arms crossed as the athlete came crashing down at his feet. The intersection looked properly blocked off with cones. But the race can't do anything about an officer who doesn't actively stop traffic. This accident comes just over a year after a friend of mine was hit and badly injured by a driver with a suspended license during another Miami triathlon.
I heard that the athlete was taken to the hospital and really hope he is okay. Prayers to him and his family. It was horrifying to see. Ajnd if he needs somebody to provide some clarification on what happened- I am here.
