I had the same experience, Garmin gave me the upgrade at no cost, but I had to wait awhile. In my case though, I ought two new, correct size pods to fit the new cranks and that worked fine.
I found the blue washer to be a better fit than the metal washers, one one of the o rings was torn as well. The pouring is only there to center the washer, so with the blue washer it is no longer needed.
This might be a stupid question...but how did you get the O-Ring off without removing the spindle? And did your box only come with one O-Ring like mine? I just put the washer in 'screw' part of the pedal and then tighten with the torque wrench. I never thought much about centering it at all
