As much as it pains me to defend JSA and his ilk, your statement is incredibly ignorant of the facts.

And your university background is what? Are you as informed as his politicians? I been doing this shit for 30 years. And I know where the money goes and how it flows. But you guys go on spouting some uninformed stuff. I see the numbers, and they are not good. I do presentations on this stuff. I've got all the data from 50 states, I have statistically analyzed it all and presented it to multiple political legislatures. You threaten the best professors with budget reductions and threaten their tenure, they will leave you in a heartbeat. Plenty of states that don't think like that.

Yeah, we lost one of our best to Iowa State the other day. Hell he got a $50K raise and a bunch of bennies. But the politicians know how to run academia. You may not like how we run, but this is a multibillion dollar business that generates stuff like the RTP in the triangle. You mess with them and they will move on. Someone always wants them. For some reason you guys think everyone is a history or english prof. Most of the guys I know make over a $1 million a year as professors. Their base salary is not of interest. They simply want to work in a good environment.

Such ignorance in one place. You have no idea and you are out of your element lawyer. It costs 1-2 million to bring in a science prof in startup costs. It costs over 1 million to educate one medical school student. I know I do the budgets. The superstars provide the operating costs to sustain the university. I wish you well in the dark ages. You don't have a surplus in your university system, and you won't see the effects of this for several years, but then it will be bad. My state is no better and UNC-CH generates more federal grant funds than any other public. That too shall pass.

We have a huge surplus. We had teachers in the UW system who taught between 0 and 1 classes per semester. Professors are not "fleeing" the UW system. They are being weeded out.

I finally get it. You are a public employee in academia. It is all making sense now...

Thanks for your concern, but we'll be fine.

We'll be fine.

Governor Walker has faced intense, widespread criticism since announcing plans to cut the University of Wisconsin System’s budget by a whopping $300 million in his upcoming biennial budget.
The Governor argues that the System—which as recently as two years ago had a secret $648 million slush fund—can afford to do more with less, and that professors should be doing more work and teaching more courses to earn their lucrative salaries.
Naturally, UW System President Ray Cross called that ridiculous and said that the state needs to invest even more in faculty members.
Perhaps Cross might want to consider this: Governor Walker earned $143,871.52 last year. That would make him the 408th highest paid employee in the University of Wisconsin System. That’s right, there are 407 people in Wisconsin’s universities that made more money last year than Wisconsin’s Governor.
In fact, there were 1,713 employees who made more than $100,000, 349 who made more than $150,000, 110 who made more than $200,000, and 33 who made more than $250,000 last year.
Cross himself earned $525,000—more than three times the Governor’s salary.
The highest-paid professor earned $306,030. According to publicly available University of Wisconsin-Madison class schedules, he didn’t teach a single course during the fall semester, and is not teaching any courses this semester—instead overseeing graduate students as they write their theses.
The second-highest paid professor also teaches economics at Madison and made $296,085. He taught two classes last semester and the same two this semester, though he did teach one with another professor.
That professor made $232,583 himself yet is not teaching a single course by himself this semester.
The ten highest-paid professors in the UW System all teach at Madison and earned an average salary of $269,253 but are only teaching a total of 15 different courses. Four of those ten professors are only teaching one course, and only one is teaching three.
One might be tempted to suggest that such a light workload only exists at the top of the faculty salary scale, but a look at the ten professors with salaries closest to the Governor’s $143,000 is even more revealing.
They earned an average of $143,813 but only taught a total of 12 courses. While they did oversee internships, direct research, and guide independent study, they were only in the classroom for 12 courses.
In fact, a UW Madison survey of 191 faculty members last February revealed that they spent an average of just 14.1 hours per week in the classroom.
Moreover, UW System schools are in session an average of just eight months per year, as both students and professors alike get roughly one month off for winter break and more than three months for summer in addition to at least two days off for Thanksgiving and a week off for Spring Break during the school year.
Yet 407 UW System employees make more money in those seven months than the governor of the state makes in 12, and many professors who do spend just a small fraction of the time that they actually are on campus in the classroom.
In light of that, does Governor Walker’s call for a less bloated, more efficient UW System at which professors spend more time teaching really seem that ridiculous?

Good god, you can't be that stupid. They are not teachers. Like every other line of work there are tiers of employees. Some teach, some research. Good luck getting those dudes that work 100 hrs a week in their labs teaching 4 classes. Have fun in cheese country. Personally I don't care anymore. Wait till they start taking away stuff from attorneys cause, you know, any idiot can draw up a will.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone, but you can get software off the internet that will prepare a will for you ...

The next President of the United States is going to be a dude who doesn't even have a college degree. And that, my friend, is all you need to know about the value of higher education ...

I was taught by the UW system! See why we need to weed them out?!?!?!

I have an B.S in engineering from a public university. The partner in the office next to me as a B.A. in literature from a private university and paid nearly twice what I did for my degree. We are both now lawyers making about the same each year. Neither of us have done anything with the horrifically over-priced undergrad degrees we obtained. Both of us are in basically the same position. How did we get full value for the ridiculous price we each paid for our college degrees?

A HUGE percentage of college grads would have been far better served going to a technical school. College education is becoming a joke.

Even so, Enterprise, like many employers, still finds today’s college graduates severely lacking in some basic skills, particularly problem solving, decision making, and the ability to prioritize tasks.

How is that fancy undergrad and Harvard Law degree working out for President Obama, who makes less than those UW profs as well?

That is SC, not NC. Big difference. SC has always been the red headed stepchild of the Carolinas. Up until recently, the only thing saving them was they had Charleston. Now, not so much.

What's wrong with Charleston? Also you evidently have not been to Kiawah.

Did you watch the news at all this week. Some such thing about mass shootings.

So UW is going to disappear? My understanding is they are making UW resemble every other Big10 system with regard to purchasing and funding decisions.

That's my point! Academia protects its own. It is all a big, ridiculous scam. Lawyers joke about this all the time. (I am sure other professions do as well). You have high-paid lawyers who have undergrad degrees in under-water basket weaving from NorthbyNorthwestern State University and guys with $200,000 Ivy League theoretical degrees and guys with engineering degrees, etc. It is a joke! It is a scam.

Just to summarize the reasons that we either do or don't want Nikki Haley to be vice president:

she is messing up the Wisconsin university system
RTP is in the triangle
NC is above SC
Charleston is in her state
she makes it too expensive to become a lawyer
Sarah Palin is hotter
she should have gone to technical school instead of college
academia is paying some folks $1-2 M (that's an M) a year
she does not have a will
[any number of the reasons in JSA's-imitation-of-BW-post, which I didn't read]

Will rephrase, your LSAT score is the biggest factor in determining whether one is granted admission to law school . . . . Two kids with 4.0 GPAs: a kid with a 180 from podunk U will get in over a kid from Harvard with a 160.
