Dan Empfield- Quintana Roo
I wonder if Dan Empfield remembers me? Probably not. We met at KONA during the 1996 Ironman. He sponsored Mac Martin, who rode a Quintana Roo in that race. Dan designed a bike to fit me, which I rode in the 1997 Ironman. I still have the bike, it is in excellent condition. I am now 81 years old and have had to retire from triathlons after doing over 300 races. Tom Murray

650c tri bikes always intrigued me, although they just look weird to most people

i'm old enough to forget a lot, tom, and young enough to remember that i forget a lot. perhaps i would remember you in person. it looks like you've kept that bike in fine shape. congratulations on your tenure and career in triathlon. i hope you remain able to use your skills to connect with the outdoors.

Quoting this because an 80 year old managed to figure out the alchemy behind posting images here where so many younger ones have failed.

Dan, I did not expect you to remember me, but perhaps my friend Mac Martin who rode the Quintana Roo to finish the bike portion shoulder to shoulder with Scott Tinley. Mac then dropped back on the run. I did well with the Quintana Roo, making the podium for my age group (60-64) in 2002. I think the low profile of the 650c helped a lot.

Were you riding those Hed wheels in the '97 IM? I used the same 650 wheels in that race (on a Cervelo Eyre frame) and got blown off the road on the way down from Hawi. That was a windy one!

we had some pretty advanced HED wheels made for our bikes back in the 90s. i could go into detail. even today there were elements of those wheels that have not yet been identified and pursued by the bike industry.

I miss my 650 wheels, no toe overlap, low stack, amazing acceleration, no need for 30+ tooth cassettes.

The bike industry sucks - cant produce bikes with 2 different wheel sizes.

While the motor industry on the other hand / bmw used to have 3 5 7 series, now can do 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Steve Hed and Dan figured out the optimal fork and wheel combo for the front. You can't see it, but the fork blades were set pretty far apart, plus there was the advantage of the gusset. Those Kilos were cool.

Really interested in how you are holding up physically TRM. As an athlete who was committed enought to be on the AG podium in their 50s and 60s, how are things now? Forgive me if this is an intrusive question and I understand if you prefer not to answer.

I have 30+ years in the sport now, and so far so good, but sometimes feel it might be pushing luck to hope to carry on in the same way for ever. On the other hand, maybe it's the elixir of youth... how can we know!? Would love to hear more of your experience.

By the way, I rode a 650c bike for most of the 1990s too. Scott not QR. While not anywhere near TRM's level, it always felt faster than it had any right to.

Scott Waimea's were nice bikes as well; they were delivered initially with steel frames then switched to aluminum. Here's a steel one I recently picked for cheap on FB marketplace, then made a few upgrades to fit my current riding needs (saddle, seatpost, gearing/drivetrain)

Dan's mentioned before that Hed used narrow flange hubs to reduce the frontal area of the spokes. It makes sense that a 60+mm deep carbon wheel could use a different hub than an Open Pro box section rim.

I stopped racing at age 75. Health issues! Foremost among the issues was A-fib. I read that many endurance athletes end up with this condition.

Yes, I would be interested in selling the bike. I am 81 years old now. I am in the process of selling all of my triathlon equipment.
All proceeds go toward sending underprivileged youth to a local triathlon camp.

A complete description of the bike is as follows:
Quintana Roo Private Reserve bike. Built by Dan Emfield for 1997 Ironman at Kona. Still like new, aluminum 55mm black frame. All Shimano Durace components. Original set of wheels plus HED 90mm rear and 60mm front. Sew up continental tires. Asking $900 + shipping from Pennsylvania

Wow, yes, I like to get it.
Are you able to put it in a bike box, maybe from a local bike shop?
I need approximately weight and dimensions to see what shipping is.
I think it will be about $ 300-400.

Lets proceed directly to see how we van make this work.

Great, we actually have a local bike shop down the street that has shipped for us before. We'll get a weight and the info. from them regarding shipping costs, and let you know.
Or, if you have a good shipping deal with a service, and can send us a label, that's also a possibility.
